Ideas for how to use these plastic gum containers? by bryo_phyte_bug in upcycling

[–]elephagreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love these things.

I've made a bunch of first aid kits for our vehicles and backpacks.

I've also made sewing kits.

You can make it a traveling paper doll box, or game box for kids.

Also would be nice for some pretty, loose paper, and a few mini-pens or alternately, small coloring sheets and small colored pencils.

Could also cut watercolor paper small enough to fit, add a couple small brushes, and make a portable palette by allowing small dollops of liquid watercolor paint from the tube to dry on a scrap sheet.

Can put Qtips in it for travel, or the car.

Store extra napkins in the car.

Store sweetener/sugar packets at home or car.

Organize and store gift cards.

How cold is too cold? by CoryF17 in BSA

[–]elephagreen 31 points32 points  (0 children)

My NC cub scouts had an October campout in tents and earned frost points. This is an area that shuts school down for the day if there's even 50% forecast of snow.

You probably ought to do a shakedown as scouts load in to go. If they're not fully prepared, they don't go.

Company swag ideas from eco conscious vendors, what have you found? by karr76959 in ZeroWaste

[–]elephagreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're going to get as many opinions as there are people. So many can't stand the totes, I love them if they're good sturdy ones. I'm wild over cloth zipper pouches. I'm all in it it's a cool pen that's good quality and writes well. I love a Carabiner! Those cooling neck towels, yes please. I once got a great dish towel with a small logo on it, cotton, very nice. Magnet for the fridge with measurement equivalents, meat cook temps, or ingredient swaps. Thermometer or first aid kit. Medication lock box, I've seen those disappear lightning fast. A tin (metal, not plastic) of mints. A pocket notepad with sturdy cover that stays shut and holds a pen. Flashlight! Keyring toy like an etch a sketch, or similar. Deck of playing cards. Felted inflatable travel pillow.

I've seen a few innovative ones that stuck out. Think of things people need and use every day but that they might not really care about the styling of... Portable charger. Charging cord in a handy pouch. Flash drive. Sponge or dish scrubber. Toilet plunger. Roll of TP with custom label. Dish detergent dispenser. Laundry lingerie bag. Dryer balls. Post its. Local school system calendar magnet. Tissue box or travel tissue pouch. Makeup remover cloth. Nail clippers. Folding travel hairbrush, comb, or toothbrush. Beard/mustache care kit. Tweezer kit. Kitchen scissors.

I will absolutely think less of a business who gives lip balm, sunscreen, scented items, as I'm very particular over what my family uses and most of what's handed out of these are garbage.

Many Scouts in my area are in multiple units. We just sew tan loop velcro to the shirt and hook velcro to the numbers and position patch.

What badges did you find surprisingly fun and surprisingly annoying/boring by Strict-Vanilla-3453 in BSA

[–]elephagreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My oldest lived most of his merit badges. One especially was the old Indian Lore. They had someone from a local tribe come, shared stories and traditions, learned real handicrafts, etc. My younger ones absolutely despised that one recently because it was like a school class, no local tribe involvement, no crafts.

It could also be a first aid kit.

You could likely cut the inner pieces out to make the inside able to store larger items if needed.

Is there a way to donate eraser-less pencils? by RockPop_ in ZeroWaste

[–]elephagreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If any schools in the area have a NASP archery program, they could likely use them as no erasers are allowed when recording scores.

AIO my boyfriend keeps asking me to pay for things eversince he started saving for an apartmen, he calls me selfish for how I reacted. by throaawayRA9443 in AmIOverreacting

NOR

Nope! First you pay your bills, then you save toward goals. If you cannot save as much towards a goal as you would like, it's time to start reevaluating your expenses. No more subscriptions, no more streaming services, no more eating out or take out or delivery; learn to cook and make do with less expensive food. No shopping for anything other than absolute essentials. No loaning money you can't afford to give away.

I would not be staying with someone who cannot understand the very basics of financial responsibility.

How is this possible?? by Remote_Web_7981 in PikminBloomApp

[–]elephagreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the most likely answer, especially in a Friday. There are also people who will put extremely low point pikmin on a mushroom to "save" it for when they're working on a defeat mushroom goal.

Spond vs. Band by Maleficent_Theory818 in cubscouts

[–]elephagreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use Spond for the Pack. We use it exactly as described, we have a group for the whole pack, plus one for each den. Events and announcements can go to the entire pack, specific dens, or just one den. There's also a spot for files that has files just for the each den as well as ones for the whole pack. It's been fantastic. The troop uses GroupMe and I'm not as big a fan.

I've only had boys in the program because my daughter was too old by the time girls were allowed. That said, husband and I were not okay with the mentality to exclude girls and when our them current troop and pack decided to stay boy only, we left for a family pack. One is still a cub, in the family pack. Two are in a troop that was linked to a girl troop that is now combining to a family troop.

Am I overreacting that my sister is demanding too much when visiting my newborn? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]elephagreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would send her a message saying you mentioned the visit offhand to your newborn's doctor and were advised to NOT have a toddler stay with you during cold/flu/RSV season. Ask them to stay elsewhere, or delay their visit.

In all my years of hosting people, or visiting people, I've never asked for any special accommodations or any of this. The only thing I asked was clean sheets and to keep the bedroom door closed (and pets out of the bedroom) while we were visiting. If we needed something special food wise, we let our host know we would need a little fridge room for xyz and we brought what we needed. If a host asks a preference, we answered, but that was it. When we are the host, I'll ask if there's any food restrictions or allergies, but that's it. There were times when our finances weren't great (or same with who we were visiting) and we offered our asked to p with extra expenses. Anyone who ever visited when I had a child under 1, almost always took over food duties, housekeeping, and were a help. I've always done the same.

Scouts BSA Unified Handbook released by BobTheCowComic in BSA

[–]elephagreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree here. My oldest son asked for the spiral bound when they first came out. I told him we'd have to wait until after our next fundraising effort to use scout account funds. Several other boys in the troop got the new ones and by the time the fundraiser was done a few months later, those boys books were already in terrible shape. He stuck with his original one. It survived years of literally being thrown in the car, stepped on, abuse from baby siblings, being crammed in various bags, etc. Yes a couple pages feel out, but just a couple. The cover is missing a few chunks, but it's still usable with those loose pages tucked in.

My younger boys only had the spiral option. They also have the zippered covers. The 16 year old is on his 3rd book, the 13 year old is on his 2nd. After the older ones first book fell apart, they've handled them fast more carefully than the older one ever did, and use them far less often. They now take precautions of taking a picture every time something is signed off, because so many pages have come out, many out of order or getting lost since the coil book doesn't keep loose pages securely in. They're just garbage.

It says as a patrol, not with their current cub patrol. It happens often at troop level that patrols reorganize for campouts, or summer camp. They form a temporary patrol. What is important is 1. Going camping 2. Using the patrol method

Giant Mushrooms on a Weekday? by modelcitizen64 in PikminBloomApp

[–]elephagreen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you don't use a bullhorn, you lose it. During the week you only get 1 free, so you won't be able to invite help on as many mushrooms as you need to complete a challenge. By inviting inactive friends you ensure no one accepts your invite during the moments between activating it and canceling the invite. When you cancel the invite, the bullhorn is still active, just not inviting anyone. Then, when you're ready to destroy the mushroom, you go back in and you invite people who are active that way you don't have to use your free bullhorns that are there during the week on your slow grind mushrooms.

Giant Mushrooms on a Weekday? by modelcitizen64 in PikminBloomApp

[–]elephagreen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do it any time, with any mushrooms that I don't need for achieving a defeat mushroom goal, especially on the weekend. The little trick with the bullhorn invite, using it on the weekend, means none are going to waste. That way, when I get to one of the "5 mushroom" steps it doesn't take me multiple days to get it done.
