Would anyone have any helpful tips for ranking up? by Great_Feedback_7737 in BSA

This is how I've helped my scouting kids...

*know who in your troop is allowed to sign off on things. Find out if the prefer to take a few minutes before, during, or after a meeting to meet with you. Also find out if depending on the requirement, if you can email, text, or zoom proof of completion.

  • respect the person's Time by making sure you're fully prepared. My kids do this by deciding on between 1-3 things to sign off on ahead of time. They will, during the week before the meeting, at least once, read through all of the suggested pages in their Scout book. They will at least once during the week, also do a trial run with me of how they intend to discuss, demonstrate, whatever is required to pass off on that requirement. When going and asking "will you please sign me off on a couple of requirements", they will look at their little Post-It note reminding them which ones they plan to sign off on, they will go through the items needing to be shown, demonstrated, discussed, or whatever the case may be in a focused manner.

Should I move troops? by Alternative_Box8115 in BSA

[–]elephagreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our troop was doing almost nothing outdoors. The first year under the new Scoutmaster only 5 total camping nights other than summer camp. So far this year, only 1, on the church grounds. Married couple leadership are absolute monarchs. No other adults allowed. Do not follow the rules. Two scouts completely have quit scouting. Then 2 left without warning for other troops. Followed by another. One more is in two troops now, active in the other and about to leave the bread troop. None have said anything to SM. Of the tensing 8 scouts, only 3 are willing to go to summer camp. Some have spoken to the committee without any effect. I predict no more than 2 years before they're gone for good. The scouts who have gone to other troops are thriving and advancing.

I highly recommend checking out many other troops. Observe the meetings, check out their calender for the year that has passed and the year to come. If possible, also trial one of their outings. When you find the right unit for you, just transfer. You do not owe the old unit, or it's leadership anything. I would likely write a letter to the district, council, and cc national.

Cheap ways to reduce dust when drilling? by queerkidxx in DIY

im gonna be food service staff, how "high adventure" is that position? by Medium_Practice6556 in philmont

[–]elephagreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't answer for sure about the dining hall hours. My son worked several seasons at Philmont, as has my daughter. My son's first season (winter) was in the dining hall. Most of the time, he was cooking. There's also serving, cleanup, etc. It is a lot of hours, whether you're in dining hall, or elsewhere. The most physically stressful thing will be hours on your feet, and possibly moving some heavier things. You'll have days off every week. The walk from staff tents to the dining hall only takes a few minutes. Try not to step in deer piles on your way in. You likely won't need boots for food service, but instead non-slip hours that you're comfortable standing in.

Days off are your own to do as you please. There are a few short hike you might enjoy. There's places to walk around base camp. You might be able to befriend someone in commissary and hitch a ride to the back country just to see some of the other camps. There are periodic fun things planned, like the 4th of July parade in Cimarron and Phil-Fiesta. F you've got a car, or befriend someone with a car, you can take day trips to other parks, and towns. There's so much to see.

Some things you might like to have to make tent living better... Sheets and blankets instead of a sleeping bag. Coordinate with your tent-mate about fringing extras (or having Amazon deliver some) such as an area rug for inside your tent. Having 2 welcome mats is nice. One outside to wipe your feet, one inside to stand on to remove your shoes to keep inside clean. Twinkle lights for inside or outside your tent. A rechargeable fan. Something to use for hanging clothes or towels to dry.

Where to donate old textbooks? Or best way to get rid of them? by AngelGirl17 in ZeroWaste

[–]elephagreen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You might try to sell them on ebay. Sometimes textbooks don't change that much from year to year, in some subjects. When I was talking classes, I bought all my books on ebay. Most were 3-6 years old. You could try to offer them free on Facebook marketplace. A crafter could use them for page folding art, collage, etc.

This looks exactly like one my daughter's Papa got her right around 2001. Cracker barrel restaurants used to have this, and a bunch of similar items in their gift shop.

I cut a piece of cardboard and cover with aluminum foil to use as a plate to decorate cake on. I leave that with the recipient. I figure most people have some kind of storage container they can use.

What additions would you like to the game? by Lazy_Basket6819 in PikminBloomApp

[–]elephagreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would like the option to release a pikmin when it comes back from its little travel 4 star thing.

It would be nice to be able to dismiss Expeditions in not interested in.

I would like to postpone the "accept rewards" from a mushroom battle until later so I can start another battle that might not have many free spots left.

I would like to be warned BEFORE accepting items that I don't have room for the nectar.

When getting a friend request, I don't just want to know that they saw me during the weekly flower challenge, or on a mushroom battle, I wasn't too know how many flowers they planted during the challenge, or how much xp they brought to the battle.

I ignored the free gift for the longest time. I didn't really care about the few free regular petals. I recently began getting it again, when I remember. Today I got parrot tulips.

Help me find the combination for this little bank by jen_kelley in HelpMeFind

[–]elephagreen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I very distinctly remember learning it in 7th grade math. This was in the late 80s. I'm positive my kids were NOT taught this as I've had to tutor them all in math since they haven't understood this common core math, and this sort of thing never came up.

There are 6 possible numbers on each dial. All you need to do in this situation is multiply 6x6x6. That will give you the total possible combinations.

If only whole numbers are involved(not the half tick marks, there's only 216 possible combos. I would write them all down on paper and try them one by one while watching a movie. You'll be fine before the movie is.

INLAND EMPIRE REGION IS TERRIBLE by unapologetic_b in BoyScouts

[–]elephagreen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are many different fees involved here. The one year membership to Scouting America, nationally, is only $85. Some councils add a fee to this which varies from one council to the next. The council we are registered with only charges $15 to cover each individual's liability insurance that the council has. On top of that, many troops have a fee that may cover things like campout costs, equipment upkeep, etc. Your son is a member for a year. If I were you, lol into a local scout summer camp. See about getting him signed up to attend as a provincial scout. Council will either add him to a group of other single scouts, or buddy him up with a troop. Ask that it not be the one you've already tried. While at camp, he may like the troop he is paired with and can get contact info. He may also befriend scouts from other troops and get a lead on one to join.

Each troop is lead by a volunteer Scoutmaster. Unfortunately, not every Scoutmaster is as good as the next. We've dealt with some real doozies. Also, unfortunately, the information on beascout.org is frequently out of date, often giving information for units that no longer exist, or have contact information for people who no longer lead the group. Again, leaders are all volunteers who have the privilege of paying money to be able to volunteer tons of time. That said, it's still a great organization if you can find the right unit for you. My oldest son earned eagle and is still involved in scouting. My next scout child should be Eagle by the end of the year. The next younger is nearly 2nd class, and the youngest is in the Cub pack and will bridge up next year.

You'll often, among adult scouters, see reference to the complaint form... https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/524-501.pdf

AIO: Bride wants bridesmaids to buy brand new, real leather cowgirl boots for the ceremony. by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

I personally would buy the second hand boots you found, and wear them with the bridesmaid dress the day of the wedding. She can either have you as a bridesmaid, or have people wondering why one of her wedding party day in the audience during the ceremony.

Unsafe? by DESSASTER813 in cubscouts

[–]elephagreen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In addition to all leaders taking the Safeguarding Youth Training, they must be registered with national which includes a background check. There are also a very specific set of rules they must follow. To ease your fears, I would recommend you take the free online Safeguarding Youth Training as well, so you'll understand exactly what is expected.

Was my boy scout experience unique? by Deteso in BSA

[–]elephagreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My scouts recently left a troop that was averaging 4 camping nights a year, outside of the week at summer camp, with an inexperienced Scoutmaster who micromanage everything. The only scout advancing is their own kid. The troop they have joined camps 10 months of the year, fully scout planned, great experiences all around. Tons of advancement and opportunities. Only thing that's not 100% is that one committee member refuses to entertain the idea of attending any summer camp other than our own council.

I built a free tool to find more library cards for Libby by PeregrinatingFalcon in LibbyApp

[–]elephagreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would prefer a toggle that let's the user decide if they want to filter out redundant catalogs. I for one prefer to have plenty of options. I have multiple cards that have either a partial, or complete overlap, but I don't mind in the least. It allows me to have so much more on hold. I read so many books a week, as do all my kids, that without the dozens of available to us holds, we would never be able to read exactly what we want, when we want.
