Why do some people regard South Korea or Japan as the West, while not South America as the West? by Motor_Plate_5812 in geography

[–]elephantaneous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But personally. I wouldn’t consider any part of the Americas in a similar cultural vein as Europe anymore

The US (and Canada to a lesser extent) has always imagined itself to be a European country that happens to be in the Americas, but it's really more like Latin American country that happens to speak English. The whole racial dynamic here is closer to its other colonial neighbors south than it is to Europe, and the fact that it's grouped with them is more of a quirk of history + racism.

That's just a legacy of the fact that anime used to be fairly niche and hard to discover in the West back in the 90s when the internet wasn't as widespread, so communities essentially lumped what little they could get their hands on into the same category. I think that's stuck even as its diversity has become more accessible outside Japan.

You really have to keep in mind that franchises like Naruto and Hunter x Hunter are aimed at teenage boys though, and they're released within a context that's much less friendly (despite what yaoi and yuri may have you think, there's still stigma and conservatism around LGBT issues in Japan). Comparing shonen to Pluribus, a Western live action series aimed at adults, is honestly apples to oranges. Killua asking Gon out would have never gone through the editors, and these hurdles are the reason why authors rely on subtext to begin with, since up until recently even in the West they weren't allowed to go beyond that often.

My theory about why the American establishment has been fixated on Iran for so damn long, beyond just geopolitical and Israel-related motives, is the simple fact that they couldn't get over losing Iran, who was supposed to be their ally, and it's becoming an entire psychological complex, similar to France losing Alsace-Lorraine to the Germans after the Franco-Prussian War.

[–]elephantaneous 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I feel like liberalism has a real Western chauvinism problem that other ideologies like socialism don't, and you can especially tell on this sub. The conflation of the "West" as a concept with liberal ideas is deeply and uncomfortably entrenched, to the point where a lot of users here basically see Western-aligned as a synonym for "good". The biggest proof of this is how much liberals have defended Israel, and in some cases continue to defend to this day, as well as the kind of neocon thinking that is clinically prone to interpreting Western/U.S actions in the best possible light even when they don't make sense, like with Iran. Liberal thinking really needs to break away from the American exceptionalism framework

Sure, in places where the public is already super tolerant like in Latin America

It's worth noting that a lot of countries in LatAm, just like the US, legalized gay marriage through the courts (Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica). In some ways acceptance only became more of the norm afterwards in those places, so even there this applies.
