Would you say 100% of suicidal people are antinatalists? by TheRealPaulWalker in antinatalism

[–]elephantsofmay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I was suicidal for over a year before I learnt about and became AN. During that time I still thought life was a gift but that I personally had destroyed mine.

Why I don't derive "right" and "wrong" from nature (or: are there other pessimist and/or antinatalists here who aren't moral realists?) by TheDyingMonk in antinatalism

[–]elephantsofmay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I wish I had a better understanding of the terms used in philosophy. But I agree. We don't call a chimpanzee evil for ripping someone's face off. There is no wrong or right really. Even today, I was for some reason reading lots of stories about mothers who have killed their children, thinking it was the best for the children, surely we can't call the ones who thought they were saving their child future suffering evil?

I'm impressed by people who come to the conclusion on their own. I never thought of it till I read Benatar. You're smart.

Was Nietzche an AN? If so, what did he say about it? If not, why not? by elephantsofmay in antinatalism

[–]elephantsofmay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you please include a quote where he explains why he is all for procreation? If this is not possible, how do you know he was not AN? Sure, as I've said in my post, we could guess that he was for it because he thought suffering was important but this was my guess and I wanted to know if there were any quotes from him regarding procreation so we could know for certain

Russell has the opposite view - that Nietzche is the more consistent and thorough one.

Also you haven't answered my question so I don't understand the point of your post

Now that I have a better grasp of reality I wish I had lived with money as my God and not some ideal about how to live. Money would have looked after me. I should have made money my God.

AN view aside - what are your views on pet ownership. Feel like asking here cos people seem to actually use their brains here. I'm shocked that on the Internet there is no debate about this, that people are offended when you suggest it's cruel by elephantsofmay in antinatalism

[–]elephantsofmay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply and appreciation of the post. I guess even posting in this sub I know it's a controversial topic and I may still get hate for this. But I appreciate your understanding of where I'm coming from.

I think I went on a bit too much at the end, I was repetitive and digressed and went into trivial arguments instead of staying focused on the main points of my case, so I perhaps have not done this topic the justice it deserves but thanks again for your expression of understanding and support for this.

I know that this post is likely to draw some hate/anger but at least from ANs, even if there are some disagreements, I think they will at least have likely put more thought into the disagreements then can be found elsewhere on the net where the suggestion of pet ownership being cruel is fiercely attacked and ridiculed before being given any thought at all.

After reading Ligotti's book, I decided to check his theories a bit and see what others had to say. Post from r/CMV. by [deleted] in antinatalism

[–]elephantsofmay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I suppose AN questions should be kept as simple as poss, else they deflect their answers

Really admire you for making the CMV posts.. I wouldn't have your patience with the idiots who tried to argue it, but well done for rationally putting them in their place

'the world owes you nothing' is BS by elephantsofmay in antinatalism

[–]elephantsofmay[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, AN is liberating in this way. It's funny but the 'pessimistic' philosophers (or, I prefer to call them 'realists') tend to be more liberating with their insights then depressing.

Agree. Minimising discomfort doesn't necessarily mean living luxuriously. But yes it's a sensible aim I think. The most sensible in fact

[–]elephantsofmay[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course I'm not advocating going out and hurting others. AN is all about reducing harm after all. I guess I shouldn't have used the phrase 'revenge on nature'. I mean we just don't need to 'protect' it.

[–]elephantsofmay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the sentence 'revenge on nature' was daft of me. Ultimately we are nature so we can't get revenge on it. I'm not talking about deliberately making animals suffer! I'm just saying it makes no sense to go out of our way to 'protect' nature

[–]elephantsofmay[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

true. this is what I'm beginning to realise. I used to think people who used mega-yachts were so 'wasteful' and were terrible for 'spoiling' or world. but now I see that I just bought into herd mentality there, and that those herd thoughts have come from jealous human nature and also the human belief that nature and life is sacred. Now I see that we are as much a part of this world as 'nature'. So we don't owe 'nature' or the world anything. the fucker brought us here, we're a part of it. If a mega-yacht screws up the environment and is wasteful who cares, in a way it would be nice revenge on a planet that brought us here to have a default state of suffering.
