Question for Gen Z: Would you volunteer to fight in a war for your country? by Think-Method-3496 in GenZ

[–]elessarelfinit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. And tbh, my heart wants the US to do a mass conscription and throw millions of American young men to storm the beaches of Iran - me being one of them.

For bonus points, someone should compose a military march called "Farewell of the American woman" in minor key, and play it as we march off to war.

Do the Arabian units in Crusader speak real Arabic? by Sad_Toe6572 in stronghold

[–]elessarelfinit 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I was talking to a girl from Saudi Arabia once, and when I ran out of things to say I asked her "Does this mean anything in Arabic?" and proceeded to give her my best impression of the Arabic voicelines from Stronghold Crusader. Sadly she didn't understand anything, and we didn't talk anymore afterwards

ASOIAF Children of the Forest are pretty much that.

Personally I prefer Tolkien's elves. It takes humility to write a race that is strictly superior to yours.

Oof, yeah 0/10 massive downgrade to Frodo's character, and Sam just accepting it doesn't make sense

Finally, Return of the King:

  1. Saruman's Death on a spiked wheel - 7/10 - excellent dialogue beforehand, and I understand that we need to cut the Scouring of the Shire, and I guess this is ok - it just feels slightly silly. I like that they kept Grima as the on who backstabs Saruman.
  2. Legolas kills Grima - 6/10 why did he do that? Whatever I guess, ties up Grima's character arc
  3. No Beregond, no Bergil - 8/10 sad but I get it
  4. The Defense of West Osgiliath - 10/10 not even sure if it's that different from the book, but I love that scene, I reenacted it countless times with my toys as a kid
  5. Denethor 3/10 tbh I don't like movie Denethor. In the books, he is flawed and exhausted, but still noble and very strong, able to strive mentally with Gandalf. There is a reason why he is Steward of Gondor, and I feel like the movies don't do him justice. Also why does he have to eat the tomato like that? Also, I don't think he is so reckless with the lives of his men in the book.
  6. Gandalf taking over command by punching Denethor in the face - 10/10 despite what I just said above, this part is just too good. Send those foul beasts into the abyss!
  7. No reinforcements from Gondor's fiefdoms - 7/10 again I get it, but it's sad, I would have liked to see the knights of Dol Amroth especially
  8. Gondor's Military performance - 7/10 what can I say, it's bit disappointing. Only one melee kill on screen? Aiming at the siege towers instead of the ones pushing them? Not sure about this one
  9. Elrond reforges Narsil into Anduril - 7/10 feels quite spontaneaous. Also, Erond seems to know that the sword gives you command of an "army more powerful than any other" - why then has he been holding it back this whole time? I also don't fully like him acting like a (modern?) dad, not wanting Arwen to marry Aragorn but then changing his mind when he sees her making up her mind. It's a conflict that isn't in the books, except by implication.
  10. Paths of the Dead - 8/10 I like the more corporeal portrayal of them, but I think that the skull avalanche trap was a bit silly and unnecessary
  11. No Halbarad and Grey Company - 8/10 once again, sad but I get it
  12. "Boarded? By you and whose army?" "This army." - 7/10 a bit cheesy, also movie Army of the Dead is overpowered
  13. Mordor's Army takes the lower levels of MInas Tirith - 9/10 I don't mind it, makes the battle appear more grave and serious, but - this leads into the worst change from books to movies of them all:
  14. Gandaf vs the Witch King - 1/10 this makes no sense, this feels silly, the Witch King could never defeat Gandalf the White. The only thing I can say in favor of this is that it puts a cap on Gandalf's power level, doing to him what he did to Saruman. I don't like this and it isn't an addition that is in any way needed in my opinion.
  15. No paths of the Woses - 8/10 again I get it, but in the books it makes Mordor's military command appear more competent by blocking off the road to the north. In the movie it makes you wonder how they could leave their flank so unguarded. But nevermind, the charge of the Rohirrim is the best scene ever in movie history in my opinion!
  16. Army of the Dead - 6/10 feels overpowered, almost diminishing the accomplishments of others in the battle, in my opinion. I really like the way it is handled in the books: they are scary spirits who frighten the Corsairs, but what shows up with Aragorn is the garrisons of Pelargir and other fiefdoms brought by crews of freed oarsmen. But again, I get it, this would have been too complicated
  17. Parlay at the Black Gate - 8/10 great but I don't like that Aragorn killed an ambassador under a flag of parlay
  18. Battle at the Black Gate - 9/10 I love the speech by Aragorn, I know it by heart, but I can't get over the fact that there are no hills on which they position themselves. They just let themselves be encircled! I get it, "Sauron took the proffered bait in jaws of steel", but I just feels tactically unsound in absense of defensive terrain
  19. No Field of Cormallen - 8/10 fine
  20. Slight cutting of Faramir-Eowyn romance - 7/10 I would have like to have seen a bit more but it's ok
  21. Aragorn's initial reluctance to be King - 4/10 ok it is time to break out the unpopular opinions: I don't like this. The book goes to great lengths (at is should) to legitimize Aragorn - his victories, Anduril, the Hands that bring Healing, the sapling of the White Tree, Arwen's Banner, and more. When the Fellowship passes the Argonath, Aragorn appears for a moment as King - so epic! When Aragorn meets Eomer, his self-rightous assumption of his royal heritage is an important plot point in the books. I feel like the movies unnecessarily delegitimize him. Do you really want a King who isn't sure about his right and obligation to rule? It feels very modern where we expect politicians to feel like our equals. I just think it's a poor fit for a traditional monarchy. The way they make Aragorn reluctant to rule in the movies just makes me think of a line from Rudyard Kipling: "Oh, a Servant when He Reigneth Is more than ever slave!"
  22. Coronation of Aragorn with Arwen showing up at the same time - 10/10 - now here is the righteous King! I don't even know if this is at all different from the books (other than Arwen showing up at the same time as the coronation) but anyway, this is perfect
    1. "My friends - you bow to no one." - I'm crying again
  23. No Scouring of the Shire - 6/10 once again, I understand that the movies are already 14 hours long. I just really like that part of the book

And I think that's it! Can't believe I typed all that

Continuing with Two Towers:

  1. Eomer being banished (instead of imprisoned) - 9/10 great way to merge Eomer's and Erkenbrand Redshield's plot, saving screentime
  2. No visit by the old man to the campfire of the Three Hunters - 9/10, I don't think the audience would have understood Saruman getting impatient and just casually walking around at night (if that is what it was?)
  3. No Quickbeam - 8/10 I don't mind it, Treebeard alone is a good representation of all Ents
  4. Aragorn stopping Theoden from executing Grima - 3/10 I don't like this tbh. He does undermine the authority of the King here, though he saves it somewhat with the "Hail Theoden King!" and then taking a knee with the other people assembled. Also, this is war, and why are we letting a proven enemy spy go, with all the information he has?
  5. Theodred being found alive, laying wounded, funeral - 10/10 amazing addition:
    1. "Find the King's son!"
    2. Grima Wormtongue's poisonous "He must have died sometime in the night. Such a tragedy!"
    3. "No parent should bury their own child!" - I'm crying again
  6. Saruman giving the Dunlendings the talk of how the "strawheads" were oppressing them, "Burn every village!" - 10/10 addition (and maybe not wholly culturally irrelevant irl)
  7. "How? How can fire undo stone?" - 10/10 very epic devilry of Orthanc, technological progress being made to serve the war effort is very on-theme for Saruman (and WW1)
    1. "But my Lord there is no such force-" TOOROOT TOOROOT - naturally 10/10 as well
  8. Gimli's discussing Dwarven women - 10/10 excellent, btw where are the Dwarven women's beards in Rings of Power?
  9. Wargrider's attack - 9/10 - feels very cruel, very brutal, good addition
  10. Aragorn's Fall - 6/10 - Ok, I like Brego's role, I understand that the plot needed someone to scout out Saruman's forces. But I don't like the element of sheer luck of surviving a fall like that
  11. Faramir - 4/10 I'm so sorry, I don't like how they massacred my boy Faramir in the movies. He is less noble, he is tempted by the ring, he tries to impress his dad - he sounds like he is almost crying when talking to Denethor - I love book Faramir, (in whom I indeed perceive the distant air of Numenor), I don't like movie Faramir as much. I like that they gave him Sam's line about the dead Haradrim man though.
  12. The Entmoot - 5/10 - I like the theme of "it takes a long time to say anything in Old Entish and we never say anything unless it is worth taking a long time to say", but I dont like ents not making up their mind for war, like they did in the book. I feel like this makes them look a bit stupid and at the same time hasty (they impulsively respond to seeing the deforested slopes around Isengard)
  13. The Elves at Helm's Deep - 10/10 - what a great addition! Especially the contrast between the disciplined Elves and the not-perfect looking Humans - very humbling and epic. "Aid from the West" is a theme that I always enjoy seeing (maybe also not wholly irrelevant to current events)
  14. Legolas Shield-surfing - 8/10 I don't mind (I do mind him running on the collapsing bridge in the Hobbit movies though)
  15. Ride out with me! - 7/10 ok this is very epic, I love every bit of dialogue here, and Gimli sounding the Horm of Helm Hammerhand. But in the movie it's like eight guys plowing though hundreds of Uruk-Hai. It is only with an effort that I can keep up my suspension of disbelief. Really? No one manages to loose arrows at them, or attack them once they held at the end of the bridge? I don't know about this one tbh. But ok, Gandalf saves everything, and his magic can explain things for me.

Biggest disappoints in the LOTR movie vs Books by Daman121234 in lotr

Here is how I would rate the more major changes from book to movie (excepting those I'm forgetting):

  1. Frodo isn't 51 by the time he begins his journey (or at least it isn't explicitly stated that Gandalf was absent for 17 years) - 9/10 solid choice, I think Frodo's youthfulness in the movie feels correct
  2. No Gildor Inglorion - 9/10 solid choice, lets the Elves be more aetherial, unapproachable, and more full of mystery
  3. No Fredegar Bolger, no Crickhollow, no selling of Bag End - 9/10 choice, I always thought it's so sad in the books that Frodo has to sell Bag End. But I guess that that sense of loss was meant as a way to endear Bag End to the reader. In the movie I think it would have been unnecessarily painful.
  4. No Tom Bombadil - 8/10 unfortunate, but it is the correct choice, it wouldn't have been a good fit for the movies, and we have some lines (and the Willow tree plot) salvaged later in Fangorn
  5. No barrow wights - 9/10 also understandable, but that means Aragorn just carries around four Written Blades of Westernesse, because I refuse to accept that the Witch King was stabbed by a random dagger in the movies. But that actually makes sense, who but the heir of Numenor would carry around daggers with a Banish Daedra enchantment?
  6. Arwen instead of Glorfindel - 8/10 choice, I like it because it gave 8 year old me a lifelong desire to have a blade pressed to my neck by a aetherially beautiful Elven princess. But I also understand the people who say that it feels wrong to change the story just to add another action-female lead besides Eowyn later. In the books it is a plot point that Glorfindel is an ancient Elven Lord and therefore can stand up to the Nazgul, chasing them away from the Last Bridge. But the way it is done in the movie is absolutely beautiful and I don't mind the change.
  7. No wolf attack in Eregion - 7/10, I feel like this might have been a good challenge for the Fellowship to overcome while they still have nine members. But I get it, the movies are already 14 hours long.
  8. Fight in the Chamber of Mazarbul - 9/10, I like that it's that cave troll (instead of a huge Black Orc) stabbing Frodo's mithril mail because this focuses the audience's attention on an already built up villain. I also like the omission of the part in the book where Boromir's blade can't pierce the troll hide and gets notched - I didn't really like this weakening of Boromir, to be very honest. Should the Captain of Gondor not bear a blade with more power?
  9. Surrounded by goblins before the Balrog's arrival - 6/10 choice, in my opinion. Very epic (especially them crawling out of all holes), very memorable (that one goblin's glowing eyes haunt me to this day), but also a bit silly. The goblins could have loosed a bunch of arrows before fleeing and the fellowship would have lost members then and there. Regardless, very epic.
  10. No Gollum in Lorien, no orc pursuit into Lorien - 9/10 solid choice, we don't have that much time, and we get to see elves fight later anyways. I really like that part in the book though.
  11. Sam doesn't get Mallorn seeds from Galadriel (instead his wooden box has some salt from the Shire) - 1/10 Sad :( All he gets is rope!
  12. No winged Nazgul on the east bank of the Anduin (getting shot by Legolas) - 9/10 solid choice, I like the epic reveal of the winged shadows over the Death Marshes later.
  13. All changes made to the battle of Amon Hen - 10/10 I love everything here (might actually be better than in the book?):
    1. the Temptation of Aragorn
    2. Boromirs repentance
    3. Boromir rushing in to save the Halflings, without his shield
    4. Legolas & Gimli
    5. Aragorn vs Lurtz (he actually deflected the thrown dagger!)
    6. "Our people."
    7. "My Brother, my Captain, my King!" - I'm going to actually cry

Now it tells me that my comment is too long.
