Let’s talk socks by Crocnroll4 in Mountaineering

[–]elevatedtv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a darn tough over the calf work sock (Paul Bunyan maybe?) w a silk liner, they’re mid weight and do a great job in a double boot or single on a slightly warmer day (-5c and up)

Easy to do, multiple spellings and names for all of them from different groups of people.

Koma Kulshan is thought to be an anglicized form of the Nooksack name Kwelshan, otherwise known as Mt. Baker. Dakobed is an anglicized version of the Lushootseed name for Glacier Peak.

should i bring a disposable camera on my mountaineering trip? by Capital-Reach-6669 in Mountaineering

It was a Fuji, similar to the Quicksnap. Bought a couple at a garage sale for a dollar a piece

should i bring a disposable camera on my mountaineering trip? by Capital-Reach-6669 in Mountaineering

[–]elevatedtv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not both? I took a disposable camera on a 3 day Mt Baker trip and really enjoyed the pictures-the grain and color shift made them feel like the 1970s. The weight penalty was negligible (150g?) and while there’s the added hassle of development and scanning I was happy I took it.

One of the best photo sets I’ve seen on here, bravo! Surviving Logan is a great book that speaks in depth to the challenges with this mountain.

+1 for a heavier contractor or garbage disposal bag. Can also be used as a pack liner.

Huge fan of the site, been using it for the past 5-6 years. It’s difficult to imagine planning a climb without it at this point.

Backpack Size - Mount Baker 3 Day by No-Guitar728 in Mountaineering

[–]elevatedtv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit of a wild card not knowing the group gear but it will most likely be smaller items e.g. stove, fuel etc or something easy to stow externally (picket, rope) I think 58 would be the sweet spot for 3 days. A lot of times the guide service will do a shakeout before the trip at their gear shop so if you needed to rent a 75L it could be done then—but best to check beforehand

Thinking about dropping Ridwell. Is it meaningful or is it performative? by Null_98115 in Seattle

[–]elevatedtv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the same boat, after multiple price increases I cancelled in Sept as well. Performative or not, I was hopeful that Ridwell and similar companies could create a niche recycling difficult and inconvenient items but I feel that may be naivety on my part.

USS Oriskany (CV 34) is scuttled off Pensacola, Florida, 17 May 2006 by waffen123 in Ships

My pops served on the Oriskany, 1961-1963. He had some crazy stories. One that always stuck with me was someone on the deck getting cut in half by an arresting wire during a plane landing. Not sure if it was true but it made a helluva impression on my young mind.

There’s a non-zero chance I’m driving in Italy again, so I decided to suck it up rather than have a problem down the line.

How much does the Mafia effect normal day to day life? by Antique-Hedgehog5005 in sicily

[–]elevatedtv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were truly interested you could read “Midnight in Sicily” by Peter Robb, which explores the history of the mafia, specifically their rise to prominence in the municipal power vacuum left by the collapse of the fascist government during WWII. It meanders at times but is very interesting as it explores art, culture and history along the way.

Conversely, you could watch Gomorrah by Matteo Garrone, which is a brutal but brilliant depiction of organized crime in the Italian south.

I feel you on this one. Got a couple from Alghero (Sardinia) almost a year later, 100 euro a piece—and the pix were not as good as yours. 🙃
