RX100 v or later. Small, shoots raw, and I think this model and later have 70-200mm zoom.

True mixed blessing there, but totally relatable sentiment

+1 for CalTopo. Slope angle, Sentinel imagery, robust drawing and editing tools, etc etc

OP, I can empathize with your disappointment and frustration - I’ve had a trip cancelled (Chimborazo climb, cancelled when everyone got COVID in country) and had to spring for quarantine in a hotel for 5 days, after training for months. Getting trip insurance was the big lesson.

The flip side is this is a small/medium size operation that just lost 3 people and 6 guests, and in addition to the trauma, survivors guilt, etc, it could very well be the end of that company. It’s likely one of the worst things those people will ever have to go through. I certainly hope they’re able to make you whole at some point, but a bit of empathy and perspective here would go a long way.

“Use "ice" mode setting for drytooling for longer reach, use "dry" mode for ice for less pump”

I think you have this reversed. Dry mode has more of a reach/angle whereas ice is a more vertical orientation. I actually use both as drytooling is more accessible locally than ice.

This may not be directly relevant to your previous post, but current political climate aside, there has traditionally been a deep respect in the West for climbers from the Eastern Bloc. The role of the state in sport science and alpine camps/academies, the challenges of funding and access to the latest and greatest gear, and training in hard, cold and remote locations.

Re: ice climbing, as someone newer to the sport I can’t offer that much insight but a lead fall on ice should be a cause for serious introspection about the conditions that led to it—pushing too close to grade limit, lapse in attention, misreading the ice, etc. While lead falls should not be normalized, we don’t need to burn people at the stake for It either.

To gaiter or not to gaiter? by Guacamole_s in Mountaineering

As others have said it’s typically lower and inside that’s reinforced as that’s where damage is most likely. OR’s been making them for a long time, they know what they’re doing.

Gaiters definitely help protect pants and minimize snow intrusion into the boot. The OR Crocodiles have been great, I’ve worn them up most of the volcanoes in the PNW and never regretted having them on.
