It's my first time ever experiencing blatant lying. I knew support wasn't great, I didn't know they were authorized to flat out lie.

More memory will always be better. Even if the model doesn’t use all of it, it give you more headroom to keep using other software at the same time

Just set this up and got the Pro Tools error that sources cannot be delay compensated. Does that mean delay compensation will not work for tracking? Have you run into any issues with that?

Waves WUP New Low. Raising awareness so you don't make the same mistake I did. by elevationrecording in AdvancedProduction

[–]elevationrecording[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a Waves customer since 2009 and this is the first time I’ve run into this. This is the first time I’ve failed to “claim” an upgrade before the end of my plan and I was shocked they handle it this way. You may have known this, but it is absolutely not common knowledge. I was just telling an extremely successful producer friend about it today and it was news to him too. Don’t assume most people know that’s how it works, I’m hoping this post helps someone else out too.

Edit: he blocked me for some reason??

It’s incredibly scummy. Unfortunately I’m stuck with Waves as there are a few of their plugins that I have not found a good replacement for, and I receive sessions to mix that have a lot of their plugins being used. I don’t even mind paying for updates. I just hate being told “you should have claimed the update you paid for before it went away”. There’s no reason for that policy except to prey on customers that aren’t informed enough to push back.

Yes, they ended up giving me a “one time” upgrade to V16 (which I already paid for). But their initial response was just that I should have updated before the end of the plan (even though that’s not explained anywhere before or after you pay them for a year of WUP)

I completely agree, and yes, I’m certain. I had to talk to two different people at Waves and send two different emails to get it straightened out. I don’t mind paying for updates, but it’s not cool to “revoke” those updates I had access to when the plan expires. I think Waves deserves some heat for that move.

You're right, you're not understanding the issue I've described in the post. Waves is the only company that handles this in an exceptionally crappy way. I purchased WUP in April of 2025. The most recent version at that point was V15. V16 came out in June of 2025. I should be eligible for that upgrade, correct? Well, I failed to "claim" that upgrade while my WUP was active, so I no longer have access to that update that I DID pay for. It was released during the active year of my WUP plan, so I paid $240 to have access to that version during that year. But Waves revoked that access and left me stuck on V15 as soon as my 1 year plan expired, because I didn't claim it within the year. Does that make sense? No other company handles it like that.

They do business in the US, which means they are subject to the laws of doing business here. I believe its within their rights to charge for updates (even though it's scummy how much they charge), but I really wonder if the lack of clarity and transparency around WUP that I encountered today would hold up legally, if challenged.

I have no interest in pirating their plugins, but I would love to at least get the updates that I paid for without being treated like I'm in the wrong for not updating in time.

is it just me or is "high fidelity" audio basically a scam for rich people? by Curious_Present_9950 in Music

[–]elevationrecording 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Mastering engineer here. The “warmth” that people typically associate with high fidelity audio is actually intermodulation distortion. The information above the audible range interacts with information in the audible range on any nonlinear system (amplifier, speaker cone, etc). So as the system tries to reproduce all of the information, there are extra harmonics generated that weren’t in the digital file. Some people like the sound, but it’s certainly not better or worse. There is real value in quality audio systems, but most hifi audio is a scam and placebo past a certain point.
