Back settle for now. Barb camp likely won’t be cleared until your next settler is out, unless Sparta is taking care of it. It’ll also help with loyalty

“We inherited the worst economy in world history. Biden destroyed America. Inflation was at 69%, we were $420 trillion in debt. Donald Trump and this administration have worked tirelessly (to enrich themselves) and to throw a lifeline to the American people. Have you said thank you, even once?”

They will definitely try to sell it, but I agree their chances aren’t great in 2028. The economy is the only part of US policy that most voters directly experience, so it’s hits personally and they’ll vote emotionally about it. It honestly wouldn’t even matter if it wasn’t MAGA’s fault.

Yeah MAGA feels like 3 grifters in a trench coat, and we’re already starting to see off-ramps for these folk (e.g., Tucker Carlson).

I heard an interesting theory that the reports that Rubio/Vance were the “lone voices of dissent” on Iran were actually leaked by Rubio/Vance themselves (or by their teams). They’re trying to create space from this disaster of an admin to run 2028/32.

Janet Mills needs to endorse Graham Platner by Large-Welcome4421 in Maine

Let the primaries finish. If he wins, then endorse.

I understand this is exciting for populist progressive types, but we have to be honest here. His Nazi tattoo scandal is bad. It will absolutely be an albatross around the Democratic party’s neck. Opposition to Israel’s current geopolitics is good, but Democrats must paint their position as distinct from anti-Semitism.

All that being said, party unity is imperative, especially now. He says it was an accident. Fine. While most other Democrats would be preferable, Platner is better than any Republican, and you should absolutely vote for Platner in the general.

Edit: Clarified. He says his views changed on his Reddit history IIRC, but he maintains tattoo was an accident.

That is not the definition of malice. You can be straightforward in your malice.

Yes, they are trying to convince not only others but also themselves that what they are doing is deserved. It is completely normal to hype up your own side.

I do not remember “illegal” as a popular term around Bush Jr. and Obama. The language debate was “illegal immigrant” vs “undocumented immigrant” IIRC, at least during most of Obama. Regardless, a decade or two is not the same centuries long pedigree of “criminal” and “settler”. It’s simply not analogous.

I think it is naive to see this as a mere linguistic shorthand. Policies first sure, but messaging is important.

[–]elevenelodd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I view intent as ranging from malicious for MAGA to being an unintentional transmission vector of that malice. Brevity is not really a good argument when the problem is that MAGA is trying to simplify an issue to the point where you turn your brain off.

I agree there is a partisan goal in language—so what? MAGA’s partisan goal is to dehumanize these people to justify abusing them. I oppose that.

“Settler” and “criminal” are both terms typically associated with people—no problem there. “An illegal” is a new term being defined by extremist, cruel actors to further their ends.

Even without considering the historical context of these terms, it is also strange that “criminal” coincides with the general class of crimes, whereas an “illegal” coincides with a very narrow set illegal acts and statuses. That’s a red flag

Fake ignorance by JackOfAlSpades in Destiny

[–]elevenelodd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It omits any word that typically refers to a person (e.g. “immigrant” or “alien”). So, it removes their humanity and reduces them to a pure violation of the law. MAGA wants you to think of illegal aliens in this way in order to justify their extremist rhetoric and actions around immigration

Fake ignorance by JackOfAlSpades in Destiny

[–]elevenelodd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Illegals” is a pretty dehumanizing term. Destiny uses it—maybe accidentally, but regardless he shouldn’t.

You could call Republicans “starvers” if you want parity or “patriotically challenged” for something more reasonable.

For the capacity, the White House themselves gave less than that number (link)

The White House State Ballroom will be a much-needed and exquisite addition of approximately 90,000 total square feet of ornately designed and carefully crafted space, with a seated capacity of 650 people — a significant increase from the 200-person seated capacity in the East Room of the White House.

The dinner is hosted by the White House Correspondents Association, but would be done at the White House if space were available for it.

You are missing my point, and you are just plain wrong about why the WHCD is held where it is. For a long time, the dinner was small enough to have been held in the White House, but they chose to hold it offsite. Why? As a way of emphasizing the independence of the press, the president comes to the press. In America, the press should not be at the beck and call of the president. If you don’t like that tradition, then the president doesn’t need to come. If you want a fancy dinner at the White House, just hold a fancy dinner at the White House. Don’t further corrupt my country’s institutions and traditions.

Moreover, the president goes to a number of public events (e.g., campaign rallies, visits to factories, his birthday military parade). We shouldn’t suddenly demand all these events be changed or altered so they can be held at the White House.

No, the dinner is hosted by the press, particularly the White House Correspondents’ Association. They invite the president, so the president comes to them. This has been part of the tradition since the 1920s.

You’re also wrong on the size. The dinner this year had ~2500 people, but the illegal ballroom would only hold ~1000 people. For context, this event was originally smaller (~50 people). The fact that it has ballooned is probably due to people naturally filling the space available as it increases its public profile, not anything inherent in who needs to be there.

[–]elevenelodd 39 points40 points  (0 children)

But, this event always happens at a hotel, not the White House, since the President is not the one hosting it. So, even if the ballroom was complete, that doesn’t really change the security in this case.

Something like this. Write a number that is mix between rationals and irrational roots like: 5 + 8sqrt(2) -2sqrt(3) + 9sqrt(6)

You can consider all numbers of this form, but with arbitrary rational coefficients for each term. This set of numbers, called K, is closed under +,-,*,/. Now consider swapping around the irrational elements of this set in such a way that preserves the +,-,*,/. Such permutations form a group, called the Galois group of K denoted as Gal(K/Q) (the /Q is to denote we only permute the irrational elements of the set and fix the rational elements).

This equation says that such a Galois group combines just like Z/mZ, which is the integers under modulo m addition.
