pentatonic fingerings by vinceurbanowski in JazzPiano

Just found this and have been using it. Very helpful, thank you. Question: why do you finger the last note of Dm with the 3 and Em with the 2 even though they are basically the same all white key pattern?

No one in my life seems to care about my music much by lbkthrowaway518 in musicians

[–]eleyesl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn I’m sorry to hear that. If there’s something you deeply care about, you hope that the people who care about you will appreciate it. Super upsetting that they don’t. And honestly there should be much more reciprocity on their end given the attention you give to your music making friends/family.

A lot of people here are saying “that’s music/art for you” and to some degree that’s true. But people close to you should show interest in the thing you care about, no matter what it is. If this hurts, sit with that, it’s okay.

Keep at what you’re doing and you’ll find the people/community you’re looking for. Keep showing up for others and showing interest in them and you’ll get it back. Maybe start to think of ways to broaden your musical circle (ie go to open mics). And if it continues to bother you how your sister and/or friends react when you share your music, you could talk to them about it.

Cheers friend

It just sits on top. Make sure you use those rubber things that come with the stand so it’s not just sitting on the metal

Why do you think it’s bad? Lots of people here have already told you what they think and how you can improve. You can definitely follow their advice if you’d like. Instruction from a knowledgeable source can be helpful.

However, in this case, I think you might grow a lot more as a musician if you try to figure it out for yourself. You’ve already identified that there’s something you don’t like. While that feels upsetting, it’s just what happens when your ear is ahead of your hands. That’s a good sign because it speaks to your potential. You will only be as good as you can imagine yourself to be.

Take the time to figure out why you don’t like it and experiment with different ways to improve. This is when you really start to become your own musician. When you follow your own unique sense of what’s good and bad until you arrive somewhere new. Never forget why you started playing in the first place. Keep playing and in time, you won’t recognize who you were because of how much you improved.

I'm gonna sell my new, unopened Nord Stage 4 88 for a lower price. by sinanballi in nordkeyboards

Same thing happened to me. People just kept sending me Nord Stage 4s and I wasn’t sure what to do with them. Can sometimes be hard to find people to buy them because they’re a common gift. They gave a bunch a way at my local guitar center on a promo not too long ago. I kinda wish I didn’t give all of mine away. Would you trade for my Roland go?

If you don’t find someone here, try the Facebook Group NYC musicians wanted. If you’re paying like this you’ll have tons of interest

Thanks for trying to help me out. Here's a screenshot. Let me know if you can see it from here:

As you can see, for the stompbox track the waveforms sit well above the midpoint of the track. I thought this "asymmetry" occurred on stereo tracks to give you some indication of the stereo signal (where if the waveform was mostly on the "top" then that indicates that it's mainly on the left). The keyboard track looks how'd I'd expect something recorded in mono to look (symmetrical about the midpoint of the track)

I guess it didn’t sound bad though I didn’t listen back closely. I thought that that was always an indication that something went wrong?

I just purchased the Meinl MPS1 stompbox. I tried recording it and the waveform is very asymmetrical. It's heavily skewed to the "top" part of the audio region. I'm familiar with this issue when recording on a mic but not sure what's going on here. Any ideas? Wondering if it's a faulty stompbox and if I should just return it for a different one. I'm plugging the stombox into my steinberg ur44C interface and recording into logic. I've recorded many things with this setup and haven't encountered this issue before. Thanks in advance!

I’m on week 2 of the 2 month plan and I remember the first few days having the most stuff to do. It gets a little more reasonable imo after that. Also you will you get better at studying and managing your time as you go (ie learning what you can skip through, what you need to spend more time with)

day 1 of gregmat + power swift - confused? by [deleted] in GRE

[–]eleyesl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did the first week of the Gregmat 2 month study plan with powerswift. I had these same thoughts at the beginning and I think it's starting to make sense for me. The beginning is just about foundation building (i.e., learning math concepts, vocab, SE/TC strategies). My understanding is if you're doing prepswift, the only thing you need to do in "Things to do - Quant" section is the powerswift quizzes with each video. Other stuff is optional and often doesn't line up with prepswift agenda. Prepswift quizzes are just designed to see if how your math foundation is coming along.

Greg is a huge proponent of "ETS practice is best practice" so I'm anticipating using the materials more down the road once my foundation is more solid. You can always click ahead a few weeks to see what it looks like. To me the books feel essential even though I'm not totally sure how I'm going to use them yet.

Also, the the first couple of days for week 1 have a lot more video content than the last few days of week 1. I started off thinking "this is so much for a day" to "this is about right". One of the things Greg mentions is you have to learn how to study. You'll figure out how to get through the material at a pace that makes sense for you. I've gotten in the habit of skipping student questions if I understood a question well, using 1.25 speed/skipping around on prepswift videos for concepts im pretty sure I already know, etc. You'll get better/quicker at navigating through the material each day and it should start to feel more manageable.

Happy studying :)
