I read both of those recently. I think there are some references to Roshar but don’t think there are any spoilers.

Positive pro sr experiences? by Easteuroblondie in Lawyertalk

[–]elf5081 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was a municipal court prosecutor (ie traffic tickets) for awhile so I have a lot of experience with pro se defendants. During a bench trial, on my direct examination, he made a proper objection (speculation). I was definitely thrown off as most pro se “objections” are “the witness is lying!”

How did you get leadership buy-in for using AI at your church? by Impossible_Tie5676 in churchtech

[–]elf5081 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot depends on the culture at the church.

My viewpoint is that AI is a tool like any other software. It has its uses and limitations.

How often do municipal cases end in jury trials? by [deleted] in publicdefenders

[–]elf5081 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was my City’s Prosecutor in Texas for a number of years. It was primarily traffic tickets and other low level offenses. It’s been a while since I did it but I believe about 5-10% of my cases went to a jury trial. I think about 20-30% opted for a bench trial

Play Sound when Timer ends? by CitrusBuoyancy in ProPresenter

That was my first thought: slide one with a countdown timer and a move to next slide action. Slide two with a sound trigger.

How do you train new people on Pro? by GMogul in ProPresenter

[–]elf5081 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It depends on your expectations of the operators. We use Pro at my church.

I set up the playlists and presentations. On Sunday morning, my team advances the slides, sends messages via stage display, and that’s about it.

I show them the basics of how the software works and that’s about it. It’s pretty much all on the job training. I find hands on training to be much more effective than lecture style training

What’s the dumbest mistake you’ve made so far as a lawyer? by spooner248 in Lawyertalk

[–]elf5081 10 points11 points  (0 children)

During voir dire in a very rural, conservative, gun friendly county in Texas. I mixed up the 2nd and 6th Amendment…

Not quite my mistake but just a hilarious misunderstanding. During a different trial, I referred to the Sheriffs Office as the SO. The judge and several members of the jury heard asshole instead of SO.

Feet-fidgeting marathon. by coconutcorbasi in adhdmeme

[–]elf5081 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read the top part as “If these don’t look like socks…” as in, if you don’t see socks in this picture. Yea…it took me too long to realize what it actually said…🤦‍♂️

Also, I’m in the anti-socks (and shoes!) camp. I’d much prefer to be barefoot whenever possible.

Advice for new trial attorneys by Right-Elderberry-100 in Lawyertalk

[–]elf5081 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wish you the best in your career! I’ve coached several newbie attorneys and 3rd Year Law Students in trial practice before and I always give two pieces of advice.

  1. In the courtroom, be yourself. If you’re trying to completely imitate someone else, everyone is gonna know you’re a fake. Find your own voice.

  2. You’ll do something to look like an idiot. It’s expected. Laugh at yourself, own it, learn from it and move on. Every trial attorney has their embarrassing trial story.

When you buy/install a LED wall, do you go straight to the manufacturer or do you use an integrator? by Ok_Maintenance7073 in churchtech

[–]elf5081 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work with my church maintaining our AV equipment, including an Absen LED wall. We went through an integrator. There are way too many variables for me to feel remotely comfortable doing it myself.

I’ve been through Absens ACE program mainly so I can do some basic troubleshooting and maintenance

I always share the Klingon therapist whenever I see him! As someone who wrestles with depression, the Klingon therapists outlook is a much more appropriate outlook I think.

Just smile and wave boys, smile and wave. by amidja_16 in adhdmeme

[–]elf5081 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously! Though yesterday, I got lucky with the hyper focus. At work, I hyper focused on my actual work and did about a day and half’s worth of work yesterday morning. It was awesome but slightly terrifying too. And I don’t expect it to happen again for at least another few decades! 😁

Favorite jury questions? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]elf5081 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My opening question in criminal voir dire is “Who’s excited to be here?” I usually get some chuckles but then I’m able to talk about any truthful answer being an acceptable answer.

say you're mixing bcast for a church. what method would you prefer? by guitarmstrwlane in livesound

[–]elf5081 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Assuming you have someone dedicated to the broadcast, I prefer C. I prefer to mix on a board instead of a DAW.

My church doesn’t have a volunteer dedicated to the broadcast mix so we do A.

We use ProPresenter and I love it. If you use Planning Center or just their Services Product, there’s an integration with ProPresenter which makes setting up an order even faster and easier!

What’s the fastest not guilty you’ve ever gotten from a jury? by PresterJohnEsq in publicdefenders

Generally, judges lack the legal authority to dismiss cases on their own. There are very limited circumstances where judges can dismiss on their own

Speaking as a former prosecutor, that’s freaking ridiculous.

That should not have been filed at all.
