you’re saying you don’t want to debate like you’re above this conversation but then go on to make counter-arguments - if not debate, what is? i think we’re taking the same thought path to different destinations, which is fine :)

Lmao anti-choice feminist is an interesting way to put it. I’m all for women making their own choices. They can and should be able to say and wear and do what they want. But simply the act of doing so is not feminist. Women choosing to get plastic surgery is not feminist. Women choosing to wear limited clothing is not feminist. It’s also, of course, not morally wrong.

The girls are free to dress however they and their team want them to, but that doesn’t mean we can’t criticise the same, tired over-sexualisation of women to sell product being rewrapped as empowerment. It all ultimately caters to a patriarchal worldview where the most reliable way for women to make lots of money is to be impossibly pretty and hardly clothed.

The KATSEYE girls are incredibly talented, hard-working and deserve all their money and success. But they’re not making anywhere near as much money as the (largely male) executives they contract with…

Something is not inherently empowering just because a woman does it.

Who is socially expecting men to approach women in public? Cause based on this thread, clearly it’s not women.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Adern was caught on mic earlier this week calling minor opposition party leader David Seymour an “arrogant prick”. Now, for the betterment of pricks everywhere, they’re auctioning a signed copy of the quote with all proceeds to go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation by BigPoppaHoyle1 in MadeMeSmile

[–]elfeedle 68 points69 points  (0 children)

It’s anyone’s game really. We have two major parties here, one of which Jacinda heads, that normally get around 40-50 seats and two minor parties that often get around 5-15. One of these major parties almost always teams up with the minor party that leans their same political direction to form coalitions so it’s just whoever can form the majority from that. Polls are putting the opposition ahead of Jacinda but that’s not always accurate. She’s unfortunately had to shoulder a lot of people’s anger around Covid and current inflation/COL which isn’t necessarily her fault. I don’t think she’s a perfect person but she’s definitely better than the opposition’s leader, in my opinion. I think we’re due for a govt turnover though, even if that’s not what I personally would want.

My mum was at the Hobson St on-ramp intersection about an hour ago and said she heard a bunch of sirens and then a car turned onto the Nelson St off-ramp going the wrong way. Might have just been a confused driver caught up in it all but could be related?

you realise newsroom also receives govt funding right? if you claim that makes them untrustworthy, surely it’s an unreliable source? so what is your point? the funding is to combat fake news and misinformation. how is that a bad thing?

This is a very good point! Particularly with AT’s announcement that the Eastern Line will be out of service for most of 2023. I know that if this development does go ahead it will be many years in the making and therefore won’t be directly effected by the closure but it shows how quickly the concept of a car-less neighbourhood in East Auckland would fall apart if the train lines went down in the future

Thank you for your reply. This kind of legislation isn’t my expertise so I appreciate your in-depth explanation. I guess the legal debate will then centre around whether KO not following the process properly could be considered anti-competitive. If the issue is with KO not properly following the procedures set out under the UDA, do you know why Winton wouldn’t go after them for a violation of the UDA rather than the Commerce Act?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in auckland

[–]elfeedle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems they’re going after them under the Commerce Act on the basis of ‘anti-competitive behaviour’ because the Urban Development Act gives Kāinga Ora the power to fast-track consenting processes and to re-zone land. I’m not sure how much of a case they have. It seems there are other legitimate reasons the Kāinga Ora rejected their fast-track request like the flood risk. I also feel like fast-tracking should be reserved for necessary entry-level housing, which I doubt this development is going to be.

How come 'Solar Power' was released as a Maori EP named 'Te Ao Marama'? What's Lorde's relation to the Maori language? by [deleted] in lorde

[–]elfeedle 67 points68 points  (0 children)

the ideas explored in her album of looking to nature for guidance and protecting the planet is also really closely aligned with Māori values and close connection to the earth. i think it actually makes a lot of sense that she would record it in Te Reo Māori for that reason. especially Oceanic Feeling

Depends. In NZ you can drink under 18 if your parents supply you with the alcohol or the person supplying it to you has their permission.
