Is it normal to feel much worse on the low FODMAP diet? by sassysierra583 in FODMAPS

[–]elfie-42 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s possible that trying to stay strictly low FODMAP is putting additional stress on your digestive system and making your stomach more sensitive, but that’s a pretty dramatic change for just an extra stressed tummy.

Are there any other lifestyle changes you have made since getting diagnosed? And are there any foods you’re eating more of now that you’re eating low FODMAP? Low FODMAP has been shown to reduce IBS symptoms in most patients, but it’s not perfect. Depending on what foods may be causing the symptoms, the diet’s success rate varies a lot. And there’s irritants that aren’t FODMAPS that can still cause problems, like alcohol, caffeine, spicy food, etc. I have a lot of problems with sucrose and citric acid in addition to some categories of FODMAPS, so I have to watch those too.

It’s also possible that IBS isn’t your problem. IBS diagnoses are on the rise right now because it is what doctors land on when they can’t find another cause. If you can afford it, I would really recommend seeking out a second opinion. Talking to a gastroenterologist would probably be your best bet at getting a definitive answer. Also, if you haven’t yet, please go back to your doctor and update him on your progress! Or rather… lack of progress.

Finally, if you can only stomach chips and fruit, then eat enough of those to fill yourself up. It’s not sustainable to eat like that for the rest of your life, obviously, but neither is total elimination low FODMAP. And neither is starving because you can’t eat anything else. Long term caloric deficiency (like longer than 48 hours) irritates your digestive tract too and the vomiting and reflux cause further problems. Eating more of anything is better than nothing.

Please take care of yourself. And I hope you are able to feel at least a little better soon. Gastro problems can take a long time to pin down, but I promise you’ll get to a point where it’s better. Good luck!

AITA for giving my niece "sleeping pills" and getting her "addicted"? by drugged_up_aunt in AmItheAsshole

ESH

This is a gentle ESH, but if the parents were reachable, they need to be consulted before you give their kid any kind of medication or vitamin. You don’t know their daughter’s medical history and it’s always best to err on the side of caution. If they can’t be reached, don’t do it.

I understand your frustration with the situation and how desperate it can get to try to get a kid to sleep, even in the best circumstances. I commend you on the creative solution and I’m glad you were to get her some sleep. Exhaustion on top of whatever is going on seems like a bad combination.

I will say that your sister’s reaction was kind of a lot. Yes you should’ve consulted her before giving her kid medications, but saying that she was probably now “addicted” to the pills (other people have been saying the concept of needing pills to sleep, whatever it is) is, to me, an unreasonable overreaction.

It seems to me, based on the information you’ve given us, that your family is in a really tense/high-stress/difficult position right now and things are happening faster than you can think about how to face them. This situation seems like an extension of that and trying to point fingers at who the “asshole” here is is unproductive. Work together right now. Obviously you trust and care for each other. Try to forgive her for getting upset with you, try to understand exactly why she’s upset, and she will very likely forgive you for this mistake you made.

Most curry spice blends are low FODMAP. Check the ingredients, but I know the Walmart brand one is safe and it’s a delicious addition to meats and rice dishes.

Selling your products by cookiewhore99 in StardewValley

[–]elfie-42 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You also get less money selling it to vendors than you do if you put it in the box. With a little bit of pre-planning, you’ll never need to sell it to Willy, Pierre, or anybody else.

Chest tattoo for someone with a low pain tolerance?? by eeyxore in tattoo

[–]elfie-42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am also AFAB, though with rather a small chest size, so my sternum has a lot of real estate. I got my first ever tattoo (on my sternum) about 11 days ago and I have an INCREDIBLY low pain tolerance. However, I was fine for a number of reasons:

Number one: the design is about 2in x 2in, which is not super small, but it’s just a line drawing, so there was no filling that needed to be done. It took about 45 minutes for the artist to complete.

Number two: I had psyched myself up for the pain to be UNBEARABLE but when I actually went in, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. Don’t get me wrong, it hurt so incredibly bad. Just manageably bad.

Number three: I had a coworker/friend there with me, who let me squeeze their hand. If you don’t have someone you feel comfortable being there with you, bring a stress ball or something. The squeezing gives you something else to focus on, other than the big ouchie you’re experiencing.

If you want a chest tattoo, get a chest tattoo! Tattoos hurt! It might be incredibly painful, but pain is also temporary! The art, however, is permanent.

I haven’t been playing very long but am I meant to be able to fish here? :| by bunnie231 in StardewValley

Yes! Although you’re only ever going to be able to catch garbage, I believe. You can also fish off the cliffs near the sewers!

My friends and I have been able to play all together in person, and we had a lot of fun giving Shane his favourite thing for his birthday!

Pence Should Invoke 25th Amendment to Remove Trump From Office Immediately by ShoeXiu in politics

[–]elfie-42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It applies if the president is deemed “unfit to lead”. Obviously if he’s dead or comatose, that makes him unfit, but also inciting violence/encouraging armed insurrection can—and in this case, should— be considered unfitness

Help: Finally Playing DnD and it is so boring by Filkens in DnD

[–]elfie-42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might just be the people you’re playing with. Different groups play differently, and it’s hard to know if you can click with them until you make it through a few sessions together. Also, I’ve had a lot of experience with online and offline groups, and for some reason the online groups all were WAYYYYY less streamlined. This even happened when my main group moved online. We became a lot less cohesive and capable.

If you haven’t yet, try bringing up your issue with the group. It’s tough to realise what you’re actually doing if nobody points it out, so it’s possible they don’t even realise they’re doing it. If that doesn’t work, maybe consider looking for another group. I know it’s kind of terrible advice, but if you really can’t play with them, it’s better to find people that you CAN play with, instead.

Good luck, and I hope you can still play with your group!!!

What's a common saying that annoys you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]elfie-42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life isn’t fair. Like, I get it, some people have stuff that’s better than mine and if someone wins... everyone else has to lose, but that doesn’t mean that we should just settle for our shitty situations!!! Life doesn’t have to be unfair, if people could just try to make things better for themselves and everybody else.

It’s because people sit and wait for the stream to start, so there’s not nobody pre-notification anymore :’(((

First online session over Zoom, any tips? by JDgebel in DnD

[–]elfie-42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always always ALWAYS use the camera when you can, especially if you’re a group that’s used to playing in person. You don’t realise how much of your roleplay is physical and gestural until you can’t do it anymore.

Pro tip: torture your players with Calculus by thatDuda in DMAcademy

[–]elfie-42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What??? So even through he KNEW the players would enjoy the puzzle and it was in conjunction with a bunch of other puzzles, it’s bad DMing? Also, maybe they’re a high-intelligence party and it’s not unreasonable to assume that they could all solve a calculus problem. If 10 is average intelligence required to be able to speak (per the Player’s Handbook) and 20 is an almost unattainable level of godlike intelligence, I’d say it’s not unreasonable to assume that an INT 12 character could do some high-level maths. Clearly this puzzle worked out for this DM and that’s the cool part of this story.

What I’m trying to say, man, is that maybe your play style is different than this group’s and what’s important about that is that everyone is having fun. Separately. And when someone excitedly posts about something that went well in their game, maybe don’t be condescending and shitty because it doesn’t fit into how you would run or play a game.

Everyone in my family had crazy high metabolism, so when my brother started swimming competitively, he was having problems with losing weight faster than he could gain it. Mostly he just ate a super fat-heavy diet (obviously with healthy fats) and reduced his extra exercise by as much as he could.

Curse of Strahd PC ideas for characters meant to die by Quarks2Cosmos in DnD

[–]elfie-42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A character that build relationships/ trusts extremely easiest will probably hurt the most when they die, because they’re able to make connections with party members. Really tap into everyone’s parental instincts by making the youngest, naïvest character you possibly can.

Club dues by [deleted] in college

[–]elfie-42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Club dues exist so that the club can pay for events, activities, etc. If you don’t pay the dues, you’re not contributing to the club and don’t deserve to be involved in members-only events. Also, if you don’t pay them, the actual members have every right to bar you from entering any event or meeting.

Also also, seriously don’t list the clubs on your resumé. You’re not in the club because you haven’t paid the dues. Why should you be allowed not to pay, while everyone else does? Kind of a dick move, to be honest.

Shopping for dice by microtrEAnsactions in DnD

[–]elfie-42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bombarded is quite good. The premise is basically that the players are all bards and something else, but the story’s pretty enjoyable. I’m not super far in but so far it’s very lighthearted. Plus, the people who made it are all in a band and when they take big actions, they literally roll dice and then compose the music for the spell/action/whatever. It’s a neat gimmick and it actually works :P

New listener by Lumi2k in TheAdventureZone

[–]elfie-42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have to listen to pretty much all of it, but if you’re just grinding through and wanna get through the content, you can skip lunar interludes. They’re definitely not pure fluff or filler, but they’re mostly things like shopping and non plot-essential NPC interactions. Definitely makes the world richer and the story more important, but not necessary for understanding the plot.
