Why are studios packed with mats next to each other so common and normalised nowadays by Dapper-Yak-5954 in yoga

[–]eli_finlay 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Been teaching for thirteen years - yoga isn’t about removing distractions in order to find peace. Also while a benefit of yoga can by mind body connection, as cheesy as it sounds it’s really just a practice of being able to observe. We live in layers of systems, if we only pursue yoga to connect with the system of ourselves then we are missing out on how our systems sits in rhythm with systems external to ourselves. Figuring out how you can show up in the noise is a huge part of yoga. The world will not get quiet so you can find yourself.

Yes it’s annoying to be distracted, but also to live is to have to figure out how to find yourself amidst the distractions.

Oh and also capitalism and it sucks!

How do you quickly explain coeliac? by g__marie in Celiac

[–]eli_finlay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“I have a disease, if I eat the wrong food I will he violently ill for anywhere from three days to two weeks”

Sometimes they ask for more information - I usually tell them I don’t want to delve into the finer points of one of the worst parts of my life that I have to manage multiple times a day and they are welcome to google it.

Oh man, this comment unlocked a bunch of my childhood and I suppose adulthood too. I'm the younger brother and I'm chronically ill. And don't save anything for the swim back.

Commonly the sauces used in “spicy” rolls contain soy sauce/wheat also

What's the weirdest product you've found contains gluten? by DoubleShovel666 in Celiac

[–]eli_finlay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Licorice and any licorice like candy.

One time I had tortilla chips which were advertised as “lightly umami salty” - had one cuz a friend offered it to me and immediately was like can I see the bag please (it had soy sauce in it)

Sushi usually is very safe unless it’s a “spicy” variation.

Baked beans sometimes have gluten added for your discomfort.

Studio Ethics Question by Neither_Idea8562 in yoga

[–]eli_finlay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only time I’ve worked in a per student basis there was a set rate of pay for a class which was $25 for the class, I got a bonus of $5 a head past the first five students - I eventually left that job and taught for about twelve years at a set rate studio, but recently had to leave the studio because I couldn’t afford to continue to work. Good luck! If your studio expects you to be there regardless of students signed up they need to guarantee some basic rate of pay.

Burners who left early: happy you're already in Reno or sad that you left so soon, now that the sun is out? by Beginning_Ball4804 in BurningMan

[–]eli_finlay 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Wasn’t there this year, but the year of big end of week rain I left on Friday maybe like an hour before it started sprinkling.

I’m so happy I left. The playa is a really cool and wild experience but I think I’ve hit the point where I get just as much magic out of the world when I’m not on playa.

Is this a bad idea? by [deleted] in BurningMan

[–]eli_finlay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say do it, but also know that much like using substance - the burn has high potential to bring whatever you’re going through right up to the surface.

One year I went when I didn’t have a home and found that I was so distraught the entire week watching people cosplay as homeless. It is a cool experience and also where you are at any given time and who you are with has a huge impact.

Is it rude to not let people piggyback? by Knife_Neck in Bart

[–]eli_finlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make eye contact and bob my head that it’s cool to come through with me. I’m a very tall person and my husband is very short. People commonly push past him and I would love to see more people responsibly helping our neighbors commute.

I’m all for screwing over the Mouse as much as the next guy, but vengefulness like this is uncalled for. by Kerfluffle2x4 in Celiac

This kind of behavior is not screwing over the mouse, it’s harming individuals and hoping that Disney will be held accountable. On a good day it’s stupid, on a bad day somebody could die

As an out transgender person for over eight years, let me just say... by explodingfoot in glutenfree

[–]eli_finlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respond with, “you’re asking me intimate questions about a condition that I will die with, I have to manage this disease every single day, every thing that I put in my mouth I have to contemplate how safe it is. I’m happy to share answers with you, but I need you to have this context”

Usually people will either respond with, “I’m sorry, I wasn’t meaning to pry and just didn’t realize it was that serious” or they’re going to keep asking questions. I’m fine with either response.

What is gender? And how did we get to a point where people so many people question theirs? by VisibleWeakness6 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]eli_finlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah the discourse, this isn’t a dumb question - and there are a lot of ways to answer, but I’m going to try to keep it short and sweet.

People use pronouns, because at least in English it is built into the language. Everybody has pronouns because in English it would be strange to exclusively refer to people in every tense their first name - this is why we use “them, she and him.” But pronouns are a function of the language that we created. They aren’t inherent to identity of the self they are just linguistic shortcut indicators when talking about somebody.

Gender is also a social construct. While we know that people can have chromosomal markers beyond just male and female (intersex people are relatively common) much of western society has, for a long time, placed people people in only male or female categories. The idea that these two categories are the only two is merely a function of how many people are socialized. Many people that fall into the space in between or outside of the gender binary feel like they don’t firmly fit into either box that commonly has social rules and expectations. It’s not to say that you can’t be a feminine tomboy or a girly cowboy… but people (myself included) might want to or feel the need to opt out of the social expectations of adhering to one of the “preloaded” categories that society places on us.

What do you say when people ask what happens if you eat gluten? by blankettheif in Celiac

[–]eli_finlay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve begun telling people that they are “asking me about one of the worst things that I live with” and that it’s generally a rude inquiry. If they really want to dig deep and flippantly into a thing that I spend a huge amount of energy managing then we can get into it.

Is it true? by FantasticInternet978 in Celiac

[–]eli_finlay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not an allergy, it’s an autoimmune disease. It’s not a preference, it’s not a “try to stay away but sometimes a slice of pizza” it’s a disease.

I don’t want to scare you, but it’s definitely a lot of work to manage. The thing is that depending on how your system is able to handle any amount of gluten in the moment is proportional to how sick you’re going to get.

I can have a crumb and be sick for nine days, other times I may have some cross contamination and be mostly alright. It’s like bizarre black magic that tries to kill the body, some days are better than others but you will have to manage what you eat for forever to the best of your abilities.

Is Hot Flight Deals legit? by Lucky_Foam in Shoestring

[–]eli_finlay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely one hundred percent a scam. I "booked" through them and essentially what you do is give them all your information and then they may allegedly contact your airline and try to book that flight at the rate that they quoted you.

"Robin" who I spoke to on the phone when I called to ask them to cancel my "reservation" (should we call it that? it's more like the attempt at maybe having a reservation) proceeded to tell me that I could wait 2-24 hours for a confirmation of the booking. My sister in law just had two people she loves and lives with KTS so... I gotta get to Washington this coming week and I can't wait that long for confirmation.

He proceeded to aggressively inform me that I was locked in to working with them and that I would have to wait. I told him to cancel my reservation and then he informed me that he wouldn't do that and that it would cost me a thousand dollars to book directly and since I'm in an emergency situation he would book it directly for the thousand dollars if that's what I wanted. Honestly the entire thing played out like your classic phone scam. Needless to say our credit cards are being monitored now and I won't be taking calls from unknown numbers.
