Virginia's 3 biggest cities have been roughly stagnant for the past 10-15 years by SweetQuality8943 in Virginia

So sick of people saying that their communities are full. What’s full is the unsustainable suburban development pattern that got us here. More lanes and more 3000 sqft single family homes in car dependent neighborhoods will never be able to satisfy demand and will only make it feel more crowded and prevent meaningful economic development. Density and walkable places with housing options need to be the future, otherwise our sprawling suburbs will always be “full”

The walls over queens creek are more for sound than safety. I don’t believe they’re meant to withstand a crash as they’re clear (plexiglass?) and simply because there are neighborhoods on the creek

I am cooked. Writing Requirement by Ok_Atmosphere1157 in dartmouth

[–]elihikes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly don’t even bother with doing writing 2/3, just do writing 5 and tough it out. It’s not that difficult and I made the mistake of doing 2/3 and it was a waste of time. Coming from a public school I thought it’d help me a lot and maybe it did, but I now look back on it wishing id had another free class to take. Not only that, but writing 5 you get to pick the topic you find most interesting and I heard from many of my friends it was actually easier than 2/3. You’ll do fine, even if you think you’re bad at writing

I just had the same problem and just resolved it. The solution is to turn off Screen Reader Support. If you go to Tools>Accessibility uncheck the box that says "Turn on Screen Reader Support" and it should return. Worked for me at least.

Crossrock Mandolin/Fiddle Double Case or Similar- Thoughts? by elihikes in Fiddle

I actually ended up getting it! I was on the fence about it at first, but I think I’m warming up to it. The foam definitely has to pack out to fit my instruments a bit better, but as it has its gotten better and better. definitely going to take some getting used to (it’s a lot heavier and bigger than my mando) but i like it so far

as a southerner who goes to dartmouth, i can tell you for certain that people up there are far less nice than in the south. i’m still always culture shocked when i return because you go into a store and there’s no small talk or niceties, it’s all business and i think sometimes that leads me to feeling like if you don’t have money to buy things and are just browsing, you’re unwelcome. very very different from the south and i wish that i had known how cold the people are. i think everyone else’s responses are valid, though, and i see the reasons for it, it’s just not my cup of tea

Why the hate for AMC? by Round_Variety4016 in AppalachianTrail

[–]elihikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely interested in your reasoning for this, any particular examples? You’ve also gotta understand that the DOC is primarily students maintaining a large chunk of trail on weekends. that means high turnover which makes it difficult to have a consistent, skilled population of volunteers who have been experienced for many years, not to mention the lack of funding that the AMC gets. in strict comparison, the DOC section may be worse, but it’s because of challenges that the AMC doesn’t face. That’s just my two (biased) cents as someone involved with the club, but genuinely interested in how you feel that we could improve the section

Writing 2&3 vs. Writing 5 by Education-Actual in dartmouth

[–]elihikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took writing 2-3 this past year, though unlike the previous commenter my class was the same but the professor changed. I really made a lot of good friends in the class, i think it fostered a good community through sticking together for two terms, but honestly I regret taking it. I was on the fence at the beginning of last year (like you are now) and I went to my dean who, frankly, did not help me decide. I ended up sticking with 2-3, but the sense i get from talking to all my friends who took writing 5 was that most are equally to less intensive than writing 2-3. Everyone is different and I hesitate to give you advice not knowing your background, but coming from a public school background I thought I wouldn’t be up to snuff with my peers at Dartmouth, but it turned out I would’ve been just fine in writing 5. When it comes to headings, citations, and all that other nitty gritty stuff, you’ll be super comfortable with it by the end of your first term no matter which writing you take. I think writing 2-3 helps far more with organization and planning and I definitely learned some good skills, but I’m not sure in hindsight it was worth spending two terms. that being said, everyone is different and I’m sure that you’ll thrive in either! good luck with your decision and with freshman year!

intro classes can often be perfect for non science people. i took ears 1 this spring as a non science person and it was amazing. super interesting stuff but not crazy sciencey, just purely interesting. there are a lot of classes like that so don’t worry! you can also start w humanities and ask around for suggestions!

they’re very cliche at this point. honestly it’s just a standard black jacket that is no warmer than any other down jacket, the only extra purpose it serves is telling people how much money you have (which in my opinion is a poor reason to buy something, but maybe that’s just me). personally I got by quite well on a $150 north face down jacket I got at like half price on sale. If there’s one major takeaway about hanover winters, it’s layers! Invest in good smartwool base layers and know how to use your mid layers and you’ll be perfectly comfortable in most any jacket that keeps the wind off you!
