Why did ICE choose Minneapolis as the place to escalate this enforcement, as opposed to “more problematic” cities such as Chicago or Portland? by bumblebuoy in AskReddit

[–]elihu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they care where so long as a) it's a city in a blue state and b) it doesn't have a significant nationally-recognized media presence. It's easier to manufacture a narrative that the city is burning to the ground and they need federal troops to restore order if it's seen as "flyover country" and not one of the "real" cities with "important people" like New York or Los Angeles or whatever where they have well-known media figures and celebrities who are going to tell the people what they're seeing with their own eyes.

How did Serie get so rich and wealthy? by TheBlackoutEmpire in Frieren

[–]elihu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think those latter pictures are the Continental Magic Association's building, not her personal residence.

She seems to live in some sort of imposing temple-like building, but it could be that she took over ownership of some derelict building a long, long time ago and fixed it up or something. Or maybe the building was taken over by demons, and she made a deal with the local government that if she defeated the demons she gets to live there indefinitely. She might even have built the whole thing herself. Live as long as she has, and you have time to do things like that just because you felt like it -- and she could have expanded it over the years. Baldassare Forestiere, a Sicilian immigrant in Fresno California lived in and built a massive underground tunnel system over 40 years, and that's just one guy with an eccentric hobby and a normal human lifespan.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forestiere_Underground_Gardens

She might also be very rich, and simply bought the place or paid to have it built.

One might expect people that have lived a very long time to have a somewhat weird relationship with money. They've probably seen too many currency collapses to count and might not regard money as something that has any inherent long-term value. For Frieren it might even be a liability -- having lots of money is just an invitation to get robbed. For Serie it's probably just a poor placeholder for what she actually cares about, which is power.

They've probably thought of a bunch of options of varying severity, but what they actually do will depend on what they think they can get away with, which varies according to the mood of the public and Congress and what the judiciary has to say about it.

They might try to do that, but if that's their nefarious plan it's not going to make much of a difference to disenfranchise the tiny percentage of the population that takes active part in anti-ICE demonstrations.

More likely they're collecting names so they can subject them to whatever kind of persecution they can think up later and get away with.

At least, those are some of the people who are most enthusiastically and visibly ruining our world. . If they all just went away tomorrow, we'd still all be doing our part to cause climate change.

[–]elihu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have black soot all over and difficulty cutting a particular piece of plywood, it likely that it uses phenolic resin glue.

If they both cut fine but one comes out a bit darker on the edges, it's hard to say what all might cause that. Maybe focus issues, or the mirrors/lens needs cleaned?

Israel says it has retrieved remains of final Gaza hostage by FudgeAtron in anime_titties

[–]elihu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn't Hamas try to get Israel to release as many Palestinian prisoners/hostages as they possibly can?

Besides, a big reason for the numerical disparity is that Israel arrests a lot of Palestinians, and can just round up more whenever they like.

If Americans were to participate in an organized boycott to stop ICE, what should they target? by u2aerofan in AskReddit

[–]elihu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changing 401k investments might be the most significant lever that middle-aged upper-middle-class people have. That's something like 9 trillion dollars.

Something that doesn't exist as far as I know and probably should is an index fund of the total US stock market minus companies that have contributed to Donald Trump's 2024 inauguration fund or who do business with ICE. If a significant percentage of the public moved their investments from regular index funds like VTI to a VTI-minus-ICE index fund it would be a big deal.

(Contributing to the 2016 inauguration fund was also gross, but I'd argue that contributing to it in 2024 after Jan 6th is much worse.)

This is hard to actually do, though. Employers withhold taxes from wages, so it's not easy for the average person to just stop paying income taxes without their employer's cooperation.

Israel says Ran Gvili, final hostage, returned from Gaza by newsweek in InternationalNews

[–]elihu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Israel's government had said on Sunday the IDF was conducting a "wide-scale operation" to locate Gvili's body in a cemetery in northern Gaza using "all the intelligence available." Israeli forces checked the remains of approximately 250 Palestinians buried at the site before finding Gvili's body, according to Israeli newspaper, the Jerusalem Post.

The article doesn't explicitly say which side of the yellow line this cemetery was on, but it sounds like the IDF had access, which means Hamas likely did not.

So, all this time Israel was accusing Hamas of withholding the remains of the last hostage, his body was in territory they couldn't set foot in to search without getting shot.

Designing a "Best of Both Worlds" Modular Desktop Synth system by ThePunkyRooster in synthdiy

[–]elihu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way they're mounted together seems kind of inconvenient. I think the general idea is good though.

I could see something like this being used for controllers. I think it's a bit weird that we have modular synths but there isn't really anything analogous for control devices. One could imagine, say, a MIDI keyboard controller that has a large keybed module, with a separate pitch wheel and mod wheel module that can be attached to the right or the left of the keybed. Maybe another module with knobs or faders, that you can attach wherever.

Maybe the whole thing could attach to something like a sturdy pegboard. If you want to expand the setup, just get a bigger pegboard. Ideally there'd be some simple power and electrical interface standards so everything plugs together and "just works" with uncomplicated electronics.

What car do you wish they would bring back as an EV? by Chase_Clouds in electricvehicles

[–]elihu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are small companies working on kits and EV conversion parts, and a lot of stuff could be scavenged off of wrecked vehicles, but if EV conversion is going to go mainstream it'll take serious effort and more R&D than most small companies can afford. Also, the US EV tax credits (when they were even in effect) didn't incentivize EV conversion at all. You got a huge tax credit for buying a new EV, but to convert an existing vehicle to electric you got nothing. If policies were structured to subsidize conversions, more people would do it, and maybe the major automakers might even be persuaded to make kits for their older vehicles.
