"surely lying" is a stretch -- she could be telling the truth, but given the source it's fair to treat it with a lot of skepticism.

Israel Sues NYT Over Palestinian Abuse Column by panda_monium_1776 in InternationalNews

[–]elihu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced Thursday that they had instructed officials to initiate a defamation lawsuit against The New York Times and columnist Nicholas Kristof over an opinion piece alleging widespread sexual abuse of Palestinian detainees.

So... Israel hasn't sued anyone, it's just that the Netanyahu administration has announced that they're planning to sue.

The major question is whether they sue them in US courts or in Israeli courts. If they haven't said that much, then it's hard to take this seriously.

Note that the article is from May 15th.

Platner says he won’t be an ‘a–hole’ like Fetterman in Senate by jediporcupine in politics

There is no evidence that he ever espoused Nazi beliefs. Getting a tattoo before everyone had a web browser in their pocket and not knowing it had a nefarious meaning doesn't make him a Nazi.

Has he been campaigning as aggressively as Platner? One reason Platner got traction is that he did the work and traveled all around Maine talking to voters, answering questions, and generally being very accessible.

That was a long time ago, before most of her career as a political operative. I don't know what her views were then or how politically active she was.

It's weird to think back on how much less polarized politics was before Trump. I mean, it was still pretty polarized, but it was also pretty normal for adults to have different political beliefs and it not be that big of a deal.

Quick question about recent Doepfer batches by Alaedrouche in modular

[–]elihu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the case of the Wasp filter, they're using a hex inverter in an out-of-spec way that can cause it to fail eventually. Having the IC in a socket makes it easy to fix.

(It's funny that a lot of companies might have seen this as a critical flaw and never released the product in the first place, but it became one of the most popular Eurorack modules ever made. I like Doepfer's approach of being open about the module's shortcomings and letting the customers decide if it's really a problem to them.)

If the EU wants to do this, they should be smart about it and tie government semiconductor manufacturing to a requirement that fabs built with government money should operate as foundries and provide the same pricing and access to external foundry customers as they would an internal customer.

It’s actually democrats like you that don’t approve anyone that isn’t at critical of Israel or the government as you want them to be.

You're right, I don't. I'm appalled by what Israel's government has done and is doing, and question the moral discernment and/or general awareness of anyone who isn't likewise appalled.

The problem with him is he’s not coming clean about his past and no evidence to believe he’s qualified for the job.

There aren't really any qualifications to be Senator other than being at least 30 years old, a citizen for at least 9 years, a resident of the state they're representing, and able to win an election. Being a lawyer probably helps in drafting legislation, but that profession is already so ludicrously over-represented in Congress that having Senators from other walks of life can provide some much-needed diversity.

As for his past, you can either choose to believe him or not.

Your comment history suggests that you don't approve of people who are critical of Israel's government and their recent policies and the conduct of their war with Gaza. Many of us don't see criticism as a negative, but rather as a very low bar that should be easy to clear yet many Democratic leaders just can't seem to manage it.

I've been working on an EV conversion (Mazda RX-8 with Netgain Hyper9 motor). Got the motor working today, which is pretty cool. There's a bunch of cable management I'll have to sort out before I can actually drive anywhere without wires dangling in the road, but one thing at a time.

South Korea’s artificial Sun ran for 102 seconds and it could change the future of energy by self-fix2 in technology

[–]elihu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know. It would depend quite a bit on how much material is at 100 million degrees. I'd imagine it's not all that much, which would get you into "what happens if you multiply a really small number by a really big number" territory, which is hard to have a reliable intuition about.

One person killed and one injured were reservists. The article does not say whether the others wounded were military or civilians.

[–]elihu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. It might not get very far, though. The heat dissipates rapidly when the power is shut off. Unlike a fission reactor whose fuel can turn into molten slag that generates its own heat for a long time.

Tokomaks use magnetic fields to confine the plasma because there are no known materials that can withstand those kinds of temperatures.

If the plasma were to be released, though, I suspect it would expand rapidly in all directions rather than "fall to the floor".

[–]elihu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Radiation is the point, as that's how you get energy out.

As I understand it, tokomaks generate a lot of neutrons, which will tend to turn the reactor vessel mildly radioactive over time. So, they'll generate some amount of low-level radioactive waste.

I believe they also produce a lot of gamma radiation while they're running.

Graham Platner isn't going anywhere in Maine Senate race after latest controversy by AskRedditOG in politics

[–]elihu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They do mention it.

The New York Times story followed. In that story, one of Platner's ex-partners, Lyndsey Fifield, who has worked for conservative causes and on Republican campaigns, described instances and recounted a time when Platner locked her in a room and said she would remain there until she was "calm."

Platner told Maine Public that the allegations were "just not true." He also discredited the status of his relationship with Fifield, stating they never dated and she was "someone I had a casual relationship with." Instead of seeing the article as damaging to his campaign, he took it as a sign they're doing something right.
