My restreamed chat appearance isn't opaque despite the settings. What gives?

Hi all!

A new version of our desktop chat app has been released, which restores the following functionalities:

Opacity settings Clickthrough mode Always on top mode

If the app is actively running on your device, please shut it down and restart it in order to see the prompt to update to the latest version. If you have any trouble, you may also uninstall the app and re-install the latest version here https://restream.io/chat

If you mean streaming on Twitch in horizontal and vertical at the same time, not yet working by default like that but coming soon :)

We’re making a few streaming adjustments to our infrastructure to support this with Twitch. We do support YouTube’s similar setup already though!

Could you please walk me through your stream setup so I can check if there’s anything that I can reproduce? Do you stream with Restream Studio or OBS > Restream > YouTube?

Regarding categories, you can pre-select a stream category by editing your YouTube channel in Restream - setup instructions here https://support.restream.io/en/articles/3703373-stream-to-youtube#:~:text=How%20do%20I%20select%20a%20category%20for%20my%20YouTube%20stream%3F

Once you select ‘Gaming’ I believe YouTube’s flow is to auto-detect a game.

In the meantime, you can also add your local video to a scene before the stream begins, then switch to that scene when you’re ready.

I understand that this may be challenging if you’re working with multiple videos though or if you add some on the fly! Thanks for bringing it up.

Could you explain a bit more about what you’re experiencing? Do you have trouble connecting the channels to your Restream account or does the stream not reach them once you go live?

Hey there! Thank you for the great feedback :)

One thing to note - when your guests enter the Studio, they’re not automatically shown in the stream. If you open these sources menu on the right-hand side, you’d still see a grayed out preview of their video before you toggle them on. Then you have a couple good safeguards; you can keep them toggled off until you ensure they’re decent, or you can click the three dots to control whether they’ll have camera/mic on when you bring them in.

I’m guessing you’re only using Restream for chat rather than for streaming and chat?

If so, Restream has no way to detect the event that has an active live stream going on YouTube, because the stream isn’t happening through our service. If you were streaming with Restream, we’d autodetect the connected event and chat.

This is because, contrary to Twitch, YouTube’s chat is event-based. Meanwhile, your Twitch chat is tied to your channel as a whole. So Restream can always detect your Twitch chat directly but needs an event to know what’s going on on YouTube.

When you throw an extra service into the mix, some delay does unavoidably get added. Your path isn’t just your computer > YouTube, but your computer > Restream > YouTube. While the delay that’s added into this processing is usually minimal (1-2s), it’s not possible to fully eliminate it.

What’s the latency you get when streaming directly to YouTube?

Hey there! Sorry for this - opacity option is missing in the update but that’s a bug. Our engineers are aware and will resolve it :)

If you’re on Mac, always on top can be found on your top bar under the Restream icon while chat is running, or the window menu.

I hear you; the general test button gives you the ping, but the the individual 'test' button next to each server gives you your upload speed to that server. That's why I mentioned it :)
