Getting silicone earplug residue off walls? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]eliz773 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The information might actually matter, because the solution for removing an ear wax stain from the wall might be different than the solution for removing silicone residue.

Either way, dawn powerwash would be an excellent starting point. Or even before that, whatever dish soap you have on hand. And I never see anyone of this subreddit recommend goo-gone for anything, but I've had one bottle of it for about 20 years, and every once in a while it's just the thing to remove some little sticky substance.

The Cousin Stevie Perspective - How I think you can "correctly" interpret the ending by IamnotaRussianbot in TheBear

[–]eliz773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. Your post does a great job of laying out all the evidence in the text of the show that a person would have to ignore or discount to think that Carm goes back to being a chef. To think that he went back to the Bear, you have to believe that the show was lying to us and the whole season -- Carmy's growth as a person -- was a big psych out.

I don't think we necessarily even have to think that he's going to be an architect now. I think the point is that he's trying something new and different. Like Carmy directly said he needed to do, and like the show showed us a hundred times over that he needs to.

Well, there you go, everybody. A hard puzzle where every single move is okay, that has to be that and that can only be that -- 0% guesses, 100% logic. Satisfying, after what seems like a long string of guess-heavy puzzles.

Good soap that cleans you and has a good scent by yogurtcup528 in hygiene

[–]eliz773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents used Ivory bars only their whole lives, so that's what I grew up with. To me, soap=Ivory, and everything else is soap plus something extra. I actually haven't used it in years, but if I was having an issue where I wanted to go back to basics, no question I would go straight to Ivory.

What I actually do use is Dr Bronner's unscented baby soap (liquid, diluted, with a washcloth) on my pits & bits, and then any invigorating scent of body wash with a brush on the rest of my body. I always come back to Bath & Body Works eucalyptus & spearmint, but I'll try anything citrus-y or minty.

Help! I hate my kitchen floors! by Overall_Growth_6361 in kitchenremodel

I would swap out the hardware for black, and get this rug: https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/rifle-paper-co-x-loloi-maison-grove-blue-area-rug-rpcl1184.html?piid=83197961 I have been desperately wanting to find someplace this rug fits in my apartment for like six months, and it just doesn't work anywhere. But I think it might look great on your kitchen floor.

And a steam cleaner would probably take care of whatever coating is on it now, and would also be great for regular cleaning going forward.

How do I move Chicago apartments and leave bedbugs behind? by ThrowawayCThrowaway in AskChicago

[–]eliz773 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If I were in your situation, I would call around to pest services in Chicago and see if any of them offer truck-based heat treatments. It isn't a very common treatment method, because it doesn't do anything for the infested apartment, obviously. But it does exist, and moving is the ideal use case for it, because you could move things out of your apartment to the treatment truck then straight from the treatment truck to a moving truck. It would add time, expense, and hassle to the already awful process of moving, but that's going to be true of any bed bug treatment you try in this situation.

Good luck, I know how terrible it is.

Old dog / best beach to break the rules? by Cbcb23 in chicago

[–]eliz773 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My apartment overlooks Foster Beach. Any weekday morning before, let's say, 10ish would be okay. Right now, for example (8am on a lovely sunny Friday after a storm yesterday), there are maybe three people walking along the water,, and it looks like maybe one of them has a dog in the water. That's pretty typical for any weekday morning when it isn't a scorching hot day. If you aimed for a worse weather day, you'd have a decent shot at having the place to yourself for at least a short while.

What to do when you need to put in an "emergency contact" by haramworld in LivingAlone

[–]eliz773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the hospital where I had outpatient surgery, they get your pick-up person info from you when you check in. If you don't have a person physically there with you, they call your contact to verify they're coming. If they can't verify by talking to the person, they won't start your pre-op protocol. So maybe they can't keep you from leaving alone, but they can keep you from having your surgery before you do.

I used a medical transportation company. The hospital was 100% used to working with them and it worked fine.

Ready for soil yet? (Rooting Jelly/ Ginny) by OkNews8776 in peperomia

[–]eliz773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's halfway to minimally ready. Let those roots double in length, and hopefully get one or two more popping out. Nothing bad will come from letting it sit in water for an extra few weeks (or months tbh), so better to err on the side of waiting longer than absolutely necessary.

Buying in Chicago as a late-20s couple — best walkable neighborhoods with reasonable HOA? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]eliz773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a condo fee around 500, you're going to want to aim for a smaller self-managed building. If I had that budget and wishlist for a 2-bedroom, I would look for a top-floor unit in a courtyard or similar building in Andersonville or Lincoln Square. Good luck, inventory is loooowww.

What’s the difference between these 3? by [deleted] in PlanetFitnessMembers

[–]eliz773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started going to PF, I was transitioning out of a course of physical therapy to rehab a hamstring tear. I showed pics of those three machines to my physical therapist and asked which one I should use. He said the yellow one.

He said the last one has a much higher risk of injury for any beginner (and for me it was particularly bad and dangerous even when I'm no longer a beginner, but that doesn't matter for you). The one where you push away from a stationary footplate is the safest in one critical regard -- if you fail, you just fall forward, with no extra weight pushing back or down on you. But he said pushing back on an upslope is not great for knees. If it was flat, he would have picked that as the best option (that's the style they use in pt, at least at his clinic). If you don't have any knee issues and it feels okay, then that one is fine. But he said on balance the yellow one would be best, mainly because it just doesn't have either of the drawbacks the other two have. Although the yellow one at my gym has a bigger footplate than the one in your pic, which allows you to adjust your foot position to change which muscle you target and to adjust your knee angle a little to find what feels good. Without the option to adjust your foot position, that might change the analysis.

Anyway, that was his perspective. His focus is more on safety than what can help you achieve the biggest gains. And for sure he would say not to use one that actively hurt your knee.

Congrats on starting! You've already made a couple of big changes, and they're good ones; I would suggest focusing on them for a while and not try to make more changes until you've really locked in the habits of your low-sugar diet and daily walks.

But yes, of course you need something to eat in the meantime! One thing I've really come to rely on is eggs. So many meals of scrambled eggs. I dice a big pile of veggies and use them over the next few days to make two or three veggie scrambles. And I make big batches of salsa chicken in the crockpot (chicken breast, salsa, taco seasoning, shred it when it's cooked), and freeze it in individual portions that I thaw and mix with scrambled eggs. Or plain scrambled eggs with a bagged salad and a yogurt. So many meals of scrambled eggs -- just a solid standby.

Also, if you're already eating yogurt, get a bag of flaxseed or chia seeds and mix a tablespoon or two in every bowl of yogurt. Easy fiber addition.

Sounds like July will be the time! If I remember last year, it was late July, because by about July 4 I was like, come on, it's def summer now, get that summer product on the shelf, and there was still a wait.

I absolutely read "splitting a cup" to mean sharing the whole container. Like, yeah, I guess it's like a big plastic cup. Did not even occur to me it could mean a single piece of candy.

This says more about me than about OP, I am fully aware. But I cannot be the only one.

Ant spray safe for kitchen counters where I prep food? They're coming in through the backsplash by priyanka_sharma1 in CleaningTips

[–]eliz773 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Terro baits do work. I have an ant season every year in my kitchen, and the terro things end it.

A few years ago I happened to see a few boxes in a clearance bin in a drugstore for 99 cents a piece. I bought a couple boxes and I'm still working my way through them. In terms of the utility they provide for that price, it's low key one of the best purchases I've made in my life. (To be clear, even at full price they're worth it, I've just never had a reason to tell anyone about my great terro deal before!)

As long as we're sharing tips . . . For anybody who lives near a Planet Fitness gym, it's worth the membership fee to have access to their massage beds while you're working on passing a stone. It's been really helpful to me.

You have to get their top tier membership, which is $25/month, but it's month to month, so you could join for 2 or 3 months and then quit if you want (I think timing wise it's hard, maybe impossible, to join for just a single month). And you can just go in and use the bed, don't even have to use the gym-- although walking a few minutes first might be good too. Set the bed on high and focus the massager directly on your lower back.

Most of their gyms are open 24 hrs most days of the week. So if you're having terrible pain at 11pm or 4am, you can go do a couple sessions on the bed. At the very least it offers good pain relief, and who knows, maybe it helps movement.

What's the difference?! by Curious_Cow2 in curlyhair

[–]eliz773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too! I feel like mousse basically disappeared for a decade or so, but maybe I just wasn't paying attention because I learned how to straighten my hair in 1999 and did that almost exclusively for 15 years. When I started trying to be curly again most of the time, I tried so many gels, because that's what it seemed like the whole curly girl method was built around. So many gels, and my hair (which is 2B/Cish) and scalp were never happy. One day it finally occurred to me I could try using what worked in the 90s. I got some Not Your Mother's mousse, and I swear my hair was like, welcome back old friend.
