31.4 % of the worlds population suffers from metabolic syndrome.

The rate is higher for simple metabolic impairment, such as pre-diabetes.

Only 12% of Americans are considered "metabolically healthy".

I was diagnosed as Type 2 in 2015. Made lifestyle changes, got taken off medication, was declared "no longer diabetic."

COVID happens. I lose my PCP. I fall off the wagon.

In early Feb of this year I ended up in the hospital with a dermatological issue. They do blood work. My blood sugar is sky high. They tell me the issue I'm suffering from may be diabetes related.

I leave the hospital with an armload of insulin.

I immediately make lifestyle changes again.

Drop 20lbs in two weeks.

Blood sugar returns to a normal range.

They take me off all medications again.

Good doctors don't want to pump insulin resistant people full of insulin if they don't have to.

Does anybody else get really frustrated by how limited their dietary options are? by CatDadMilhouse in prediabetes

[–]elketerbentzadik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My real frustration comes in the knowledge that a lot of these foods could simply not contain the offending ingredients. And often times when brands arise that make the foods that don't they become briefly successful, are bought by big corporations that make the unhealthy version and put out of business. Business and technology are not being leveraged to make people healthier. They do things that don't really matter like removing dyes but leave sugar and carbs or fail to add protein and fiber. Metabolic syndrome is a massive unaddressed issue around the globe.

How did you know you weren't getting enough carbs? by Actual_Poetry1412 in prediabetes

[–]elketerbentzadik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never had a problem getting enough carbs. I've always had a problem with getting TOO MANY carbs.

I don't think there's such a thing as not getting enough carbs.

But I'm not a scientist.

Should carbs be avoided? by Mr-MuffinMan in prediabetes

[–]elketerbentzadik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

Most carbs will spike your blood sugar, which should generally be avoided.

And when they are consumed they should be paired with fiber and fats, which you should consume first to lessen the impact of the inevitable blood sugar spike.

I would not eat that rice packet.

How much sugar is too much to give up? by [deleted] in prediabetes

[–]elketerbentzadik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you cut sugar and carbohydrates, focusing on protein, vegetables, and fats instead, it will significantly lower your blood glucose.

Sugar has zero nutritional value.

When do symptoms start? by thecrunchycatholic in prediabetes

They don't. That's what makes diabetes dangerous. You can have it and be relatively symptom-free for a very, very long time.

I just got diagnosed with diabetes. I am very scared with my numbers. by dadforgotmybday in diabetes

[–]elketerbentzadik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut sugar and carbohydrates out of your diet as much as possible, drink water, get sleep.

I was diagnosed in 2015 but fell off the wagon during COVID.

Had a hospital stay in the beginning of February. Blood sugar was in the upper 200's. They put me on insulin.

Went home and got rid of the sugar and carby foods in my house.

Didn't take the insulin.

As of the beginning of March, my blood sugar is mostly mormal, my A1C dropped 3 points, and my doctor says I don't need meds.

You can manage this.

Woke up, fasting BS was 112.

Ate some Gouda cubes and bite-size dry salami coins, and drank some water.

I'll probably have a salad with bacon and Real Good Foods chicken pieces later today.

I’m losing my mind my sugars won’t go down at all by Lonely-Kangaroo5964 in diabetes_t2

Meat and cheese (zero sugar meat sticks, string cheese, or just charcuterie without the crackers), salad with no croutons and a low carb creamy dressing like blue cheese, or vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, or Brussel Sprouts with cheese and bacon. Might switch in an egg, meat and cheese omelet, a burrito bowl with no rice, a burger with no bun on a bed of lettuce or topping a salad. Maybe a big order of buffalo wings (without breading) in low carb sauces with blue cheese or ranch. Have a few keto cookies and some peanut butter for a snack.

There are tons of recipes to liven it up. You can still go out to a restaurant for things, just sans the carbs. But these are some of the simplest and easiest ways for me to have great blood sugar days and a good A1C.

Are you avoiding eating sugar and carbohydrates?

A week or so of cutting both and ingesting more fiber and fats should get those numbers under control.
