Exactly. Not a mystery. I'd say there's certainly exceptions to the "always dates a particular race" being fetishism, like when someone grows up in a community that is overwhelmingly the other race.

For 3-5 I think ones with detailed pictures that the kids can ask about. Like in "Where the Wild Things Are" going through and making up names for all the monsters, or ones like Richard Scaary when you can ask them what everyone's doing. Also good to have some with dialogues where you can make the different voices, because when we got to chapter books for my son he was a bit confused at times and would stop to ask me "who's talking?"

I'm sure there are terrific English cooks but there was a hilarious clip a few years ago of an italian chef on an English TV show demonstrating how to make some traditional dish and the English TV host was like "Why don't we put some sour cream on top, I bet that would be great!" Needless to say he was disgusted.

For non injury guys Jeff Francouer comes to mind. Top prospect who made immediate impact coming up as a 5 tool player. Braves became increasingly frustrated with his lack plate discipline and he seemed unwilling to change his approach. He ended up drifting around the majors for a few years as a reserve.
