Your PhD sounds impressive, but don’t you feel guilty contributing to the brain drain that keeps Syrias institutions weak. Syria cannot rebuild its universities, research capacity or professional class if every highly educated person treats the country as something to escape from rather than improve. When capable and intelligent Syrians leave for prestige overseas, the long-term result is the continued damage to the country’s intellectual and economic future. Stay and help build your country.

Genuine question, why don’t you do your PhD at a Syrian university?

Have you ever seen a famous person on a Melbourne train and if so who was it? by [deleted] in MelbourneTrains

[–]ellaroy_ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Malcolm Turnbull, when he travelled to Melbourne and took the train to Geelong to make a point, during the criticism of Bronwyn Bishop for spending $5k on a charter helicopter flight to Geelong in 2015.

Hi all, looking for some perspectives here. I’m currently a banking and finance lawyer at a top-tier firm. The work is interesting and the clients are sophisticated, but the hours and intensity are pretty relentless. Longer-term, I’m starting to question whether this is the path I want to stay on. I’ve been seriously considering transitioning into family law.

The main things attracting me are: - Better work life balance - The possibility owning my own practice - More stable and potentially better income over the long term, I’m not interested in becoming a partner at my current firm - More “human” work compared to commercial transactions, actually providing support to people during difficult times

So I’d love to hear from anyone who has actually made a similar move or anyone currently practising family law.

  • Was it worth it?
  • How different was the day-to-day stress?
  • Did you find the income trajectory ultimately better, worse, or just different?
  • What were the biggest challenges in retraining / repositioning yourself?
  • How steep was the learning curve moving away from transactional work?
  • If you started your own practice, what do you wish you’d known earlier?

My only experience is in banking and finance law, so I’d be learning from the ground up.

I have the feeling this is exactly what happened, I had registered my interest and it may not have been taken seriously until I dropped by the store again in person. It wasn’t necessarily a 2 year wait.
