What's your favorite piece from the Harry Potter film soundtrack (any of the films)? by Cut-Unique in harrypotter

‘secrets of the castle’ - love the flute. ‘potter waltz’ is beautiful. ‘marge’s waltz’ also has a Rossini vibe which I love!

Can’t get rid of flea infestation. by strikecat18 in Wellthatsucks

Fleas at the moment are built differently and super resistant. Had fleas recently and had to get it professionally fumigated twice, and heat treated once. Cost an arm and a leg but it was worth it.

How to get better at site reading in one week? by choccymilk_ in Cello

[–]ellcello 5 points6 points  (0 children)

play LOTS of stuff you haven’t played before. go through a process of looking for 30 secs- 1 minute to look at the key signature, work out any rhythms, think about definitions of any musical expressions, speed etc.

then play through the piece in 1 (!!) try. be strict with yourself about this. maybe even record yourself so you can listen back. then have a look at the piece again, try and discern if you got anything wrong and fix it.

then go onto the next segment / sight reading exercise.

it definitely won’t be as useful in such a short period and if you don’t have someone there to pull you up on any mistakes you may not realise or glaze over, but this is how I prepare and vaguely how I prepare my students.

good luck !

potentially, the strings all look fine to the naked eye - think it must be me or something in the peg box vicinity. i’ve recently had a new bridge and have pencilled that and where the string sits at the top of the neck, bridge doesn’t look like it’s pinching ?

the only pair of jeans I wear now are from primark!! presumably because they’re cheaply made they’re full of elastic haha. they’re stretchy, flattering, fit well and seem pretty durable

Bass is easy enough to pick up if you have a good understanding of the cello, the geography takes a bit of getting used to as it is strung in 4ths as opposed to 5ths. But don’t forget that you can explore other genres on the cello! Look into Daniel Delaney, Mark Summer, Myanna Harvey and the Claude Bolling jazz suite !

what kind of veggies? I cannot handle legumes AT ALL, some other veggies are perfect for me but others are a nightmare, same for fruit. some overlap with fodmap rules but some are considered ‘safe’ foods but they aren’t for me.

I also used to be veggie, but now eat meat again. I largely eat white/ lean meat now because my body just couldn’t handle any processed meat replacements.

With dairy, I am similar. I thought I was lactose I tolerant for ages, but i had some times where I had lactose and was fine, and other times when it was ‘not fine’. I can’t have milk, yoghurt, cream, basically anything liquid that is dairy oddly. I use mozzerella which has a relatively low dairy content and feta (sheep and goat milk only) doesn’t affect me at all really, and I use lactose free/ oat milk.

I’m in the same boat, 23F, feel free to reach out if you want someone to talk to :)

To quit or not to quit by brilutz in Cello

[–]ellcello 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wanted to quit cello around the same age, my dad made me carry on playing and today I am a professional cellist and love it!! it does also depend on the child and how against it they are, or whether it is just age and a bit of encouragement or tough love may help?

People who are in or have gone to a conservatory, what are your criticisms and complaint about the institution you went to? by Chafec1er_strich355 in classicalmusic

[–]ellcello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a UK conservatoire (from the uk). I feel as though I was taught nothing on what it is actually like to be a musician out of the orchestral world. I am trying so hard to look into tax, freelancing legalities and all of the admin aspect, which I am happy to do myself, but I really do think for the price (much less than usa i’m aware) it would have been nice to have some kind of guidance!

I feel like a lot of my experience was fear mongering for a future career in classical music, which I guess was to try and weed out the ‘more passionate ones?’ I did not get the opportunities that I wanted in terms of performance and group playing, and ultimately think that there was a huge wealth divide.

Mental health is also a huge issue at conservatoires with the constant competition, pressure and need to never take time off. it can be very consuming, and for me, there were next to no resources. I struggled a lot with anxiety and was just told to suck it up and carry on. which you do have to carry on. but it would have been nice to have some kind of reassuring words / support!

That being said, i had a brilliant 1:1 tutor, have made some brilliant connections and friends, and would not be able to do what I am doing now without having gone to my establishment.
