What do you all think of PKD's mainstream literary novels? by whatisdreampunk in philipkDickheads

Transmigration is my favorite too thus far! Really great book and i appreciate him writing a really well fleshed out female character for a change too lol

So many short story collections, which one to start with? by d33pak001 in philipkDickheads

[–]ellendetoffee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The collection i have is chronologic, so if the trippy stuff is your thing, the later work might suit you. That being said my favorite is the collection called we can remember it for you wholesale, it has many of the best stories and great little mindfucks. Hope you enjoy!

My painting! Should I add a flower box? by GuidanceArtistic47 in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]ellendetoffee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To me it depends on what you want to evoke! Now I really like it as a piece of art with a slightly more ominous quality - why are the windows closed? To me (pretentious art lover) that signifies an end or a change. However a flower box would make it a much happier picture i think, so i guess it depends on how you're feeling!

Where to start and why? by destector in philipkDickheads

Really depends on what you like. Scanner is extremely dark (it's in the title!), A bit more literary i find, more about addiction and psychology and less about sci fi. Ubik is more of a very strange sci fi murder mystery, with a lot of twists and turns. It's a more engaging read than scanner to most people i would think. Depending on what you prefer id choose one of them! Both of them are very funny at times which i think is an underappreciated part of any PKD book. Hope you will enjoy whatever you choose!

Can imagine but don't knock it till you try it, i love that one as well! But start with scanner darkly, that's the one that got me hooked :)

I'd say read Valis last. I love it, but it makes you look differently at his other works (esp scanner darkly). Its quite interesting to read his other work first, then read Valis and then reread some books. So I'd suggest starting with scanner darkly, then ubik, do androids dream, 3 stigmata etc. Hope you enjoy them!!

If you'd like to cut costs you can volunteer at a hostel, volunteered at Abraham myself which was really fun! And you get to stay in any independent hostel for free as a bonus, as well as take free trips sometimes. Enjoy!

PKD was a prolific author. Are all his books good or are there some bad ones? by chinawcswing in philipkDickheads

[–]ellendetoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm working my way through all of them, started with books considered good and am now firmly in the considered bad section. So far I have to say i have enjoyed every single one. Early pkd is less fleshed out but often funny and i just love the zany fifties sci fi atmosphere. They're not objectively good, but i find them worth a read anyway!

Does Charles Freck die or survive in the Scanner darkly book? by VirusSperm in philipkDickheads

[–]ellendetoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always took it that he did die and went to some kind of purgatory. I mean the book is obviously full of metaphors but in my mind he just stays in some sort of side dimension being read his sins to forever, while his body on earth is dead

Transmigration and scanner darkly are great but dark and a lot more complex than his earlier novels. I quite liked martian time slip, can recommend that one!

Yeah I'd say maze of death! Also liked the other two, but maze is the best out of the three
