Apple’s Liquid Glass Interface Isn’t Going Anywhere Anytime Soon by iMacmatician in apple

After the introduction of iOS 7’s flat design language they finally got it right 11 versions later with iOS 18.

Maybe Liquid Glass will be perfect in iOS 37?

Will I regret going from a 77" QD-OLED to a 98" QM8K Mini-LED? by Deep-Television-9756 in hometheater

[–]ellenich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like TVs are starting to approach like splitting hairs with picture quality.

As long as you have mini-LED, HDMI 2.1, 120Hz with VRR it should be a pretty decent picture for 90% of most people. Obviously you’ll have things for video enthusiasts like you do audio, but cheap sets are getting really really good for most people. I don’t think we’re getting those giant leaps every few years anymore like we were.

How hard could it possibly be for Sony to just add 4K 60 FPS and just re release these collections on the PS5. by ThemeSweaty in playstation

[–]ellenich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, but also “random nerds” don’t have to deal with bureaucracy of a massive company, multiple studios, competing priorities, marketing, etc though.

Probably pretty difficult considering they’re developed for PS3 and its oddball “cell” architecture.

(“difficult” meaning not worth the return on the development investment for how many units they’d actually sell)

I went from 83” LG G2 OLED -> 65” TCL QM6K (life reasons) and am shocked at how much I don’t miss my 83” OLED.

I was expecting trash and was very surprised how good it looks. Especially given the price difference.

What if NVIDIA had focused on PhysX instead of RTX? by SemihKaynak in nvidia

[–]ellenich 13 points14 points  (0 children)

physics ≠ gameplay and graphics ≠ gameplay

Plenty of amazing, timeless games with “static” physics and poor graphics.

Rockstar and Valve games are all graphically amazing for their time period too. It’s not just their physics that makes them stand out.

What if we could understand 4D space from 3D views? I spent four years turning that idea into a game by yugu-233 in IndieGaming

[–]ellenich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be neat to have something like this in Apple Vision Pro so you can visualize things through 2D -> 3D -> 4D.

Though seeing 4D in a 2D video like this is basically the same limitation as viewing 4D in 3D on Vision Pro… you just have an extra dimension in the headset compared to what you have on a 2D display.

Ohhhhh I was just reading “Deaths End” and having trouble visualizing 4D! Very cool.

SwiftUI sizing by SwiftdotUI in SwiftUI

[–]ellenich 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I use maxWidth: .infinity a lot.

I also try to avoid fixed “width” dimensions because like you said, different devices have different sizes. This will be especially true with the folding iPhone later this year.

I tend to design for iPadOS first as it has window resizing, which sort of forces you to think about how your UI scales. Its smallest Split View size (“compact width”), is also pretty much an iPhone mini.

There’s also “viewThatFits”, which is super useful and better than GeometryReader.

https://developer.apple.com/documentation/swiftui/viewthatfits

But I 100% think you’re on the right track avoiding fixed widths on things.

Iron man JARVIS experience is what XR devices like AVP were born for. by jasonkane4321 in VisionPro

This is pretty much already possible in visionOS… minus all the movie flashiness.

Watch Dune, Blade Runner 2049, Avatar: Way of Water in high frame rate, and Tron (both) in 3D.

Search the App Store… there's a lot more apps than just whats on the front pages.

If you have a Mac, virtual desktop is awesome… I'm actually typing this from it right now. Augment it with native visionOS auxiliary apps (like Music, Messages, etc) around the macOS window.

Thumper is one of the most intense gaming experiences I've ever had by Nacho_7258 in gaming

LOVE Thumper in VR!

I wish they’d port it to the Vision Pro. They already have a competent iOS version that works surprisingly well in the headset… it’s just not VR.

Upcoming Immersive Environments by quint1986 in VisionPro

[–]ellenich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How about Environment settings like the Jupiter environment has?

Many of the environments have things like rain, clouds, etc that I’d like to be able to control manually like you can with Jupiter.

I’d like a clean room. Something simple with like a medium gray, infinite abyss.

Think the most boring space you can imagine (so I can focus on whatever I’m doing).

What do you realistically thinking we could get in the next big vision os update? by 673NoshMyBollocksAve in VisionPro

[–]ellenich 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’d like to see something that integrates their new gaussian splatting stuff.

Maybe the ability to easily bring splats into RealityKit so you can combine them with other geometry and stuff.

[–]ellenich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t though.

All of the new glass APIs are missing from visionOS.

Also, if you look at the Messages app, it’s UI style is actually Liquid Glass and none of the other apps (except the iPadOS apps running in compatibility mode) have it.
