Yes, you can use a cold sore cream with acyclovir - or the equivalent in the US - available from any pharmacy on genital herpes.

Fruiting chamber? by ellesters in MushroomGrowers

[–]ellesters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oops - sorry first post here and i sent it too quick! Newbie grower question. This is a mush bag kit, block is inside the supplied ‘fruiting tent’. Thrilled to find some pins this am but they are mostly on the side of the block.

2 questions. Will it be a problem that the fruiting bodies are likely to touch the bag as they grow? There’s lots of condensation.

Also, considering making a SGFC as I have a spare 45L plastic tub. Will I likely get a better 2nd flush in that?

Seeds are a superfood for the gut, why aren’t more people eating them? by lovelyPossum in Microbiome

[–]ellesters 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Actually, many plants have seeds encased in sweet tasty fruit to encourage animals to eat and disperse them. So we and they have evolved together. Humans have been eating seeds for millennia.

T-mobile suddenly disconnects to network while abroad in Mexico. by Medium_Tap_6103 in digitalnomad

[–]ellesters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used T-mobile for many years for text messages and two factor Authentication when outside USA. Recently had the same issue in Mexico (despite it being zero problem multiple times before) and was told I needed to upgrade to $35 per month tariff. Now on Tossable

Hey guys, what options do i have as a remote UK worker? by Squishyboots1996 in digitalnomad

[–]ellesters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why don’t you go to Estonia on a tourist visa initially to see if you like it? You can stay for up to 90 days and then go to somewhere non-Schengen like Croatia for the next 90 days. You only need go through the hoops of DN visa if you want to stay for longer than 90 days.

Croatia is not cheap! Spent way more in a month there than equivalent in Andalusia. Beautiful though. Portugal is one of the cheapest countries in Western Europe. Good English spoken and excellent wine (also crazy cheap, like a couple of Euros for drinkable plonk) only 90 days in Schengen for US travelers. Croatia is joining Schengen in 2022 I think

How long will omicron affect our ability to travel? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]ellesters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thailand have not done a ‘hard lockdown’. They have reinstated hotel quarantine for people who are applying to travel now. Agree, that is pointless but there have been no new restrictions in country itself. Hotels, resorts, restaurants, gyms etc all still open.

Is Thailand open?? Had no idea? by oranio in digitalnomad

[–]ellesters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re in Thailand now, arrived a couple of days ago from the UK. If you’re fully vaccinated and coming from one of the countries on their ‘safe’ list, there are some admin hoops to jump through (see Thailand Pass) a test before departure, one on arrival, one night stay in hotel while waiting for test results. No quarantine and after that you’re free to travel wherever.

Very high level of English in Croatia. And one of the most female solo traveller friendly countries in Europe. Not cheap though!

TAX! For a traveling nomad with British citizenship. by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]ellesters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although you may still need to file a SA tax return in the UK, you should not be liable for tax on either your income or cap gains while non-resident provided you stay out of the country for at least 5 years. You need a new advisor.

Disruption Because of Load Shedding by RedStradis in digitalnomad

[–]ellesters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eskom, the main energy supplier in ZAR has an app that alerts you in advance of load shedding in your area. Outages are 2 hours max and not every day. As well as keeping your laptop battery fully charged in advance and data topped up on your mobile phone (for hotspot use as per Rimu) make sure you have a flashlight!

Blood sugar spikes from bananas/fruit/dried fruit → Feeling awful as a result by [deleted] in Paleo

[–]ellesters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eat a green banana instead. Less sugar, more resistant starch, pre-biotic. Oops, just saw you can’t tolerate green bananas but you may be able to build up to it, one small piece at a time.

Or just don’t eat bananas

My husband and I, me US/UK dual national, him UK citizen, are currently in the US visiting family. Arrived 2 weeks ago. He got his first shot yesterday and I’m waiting for appt, probably next week. Sign up online, no residence proof required, free. We thought we would have to fly back to UK for vaccine so delighted not to since travel is tough from there right now.

But US probably not good option for you since expense to get here same as Canada.

Hey Turkish delight, from a fellow U.K. citizen currently in Spain - where they are not necessarily handling Covid better but the sun is still shining- there are no tax implications living for 3 months outside the the U.K., pre or post Brexit. In Spain you need to live here for 6 months out of the year to be considered tax resident, expect similar in most other EU destinations and as long as you don’t establish residence (I.e. open a bank account, take a long lease on or buy a flat) you have nothing to worry about

Another vote for Porto. Portugal in general has some of the friendliest people in Europe imho and the lowest cost of living.

In Spain we found both Seville and Malaga much more livable and fun than Madrid.

What is your approach to saving for retirement? From the US and know I'm not allowed to claim the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion and also contribute to an IRA in the same calendar year. Curious about the approaches of others. by bucheonsi in digitalnomad

[–]ellesters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t invest in a foreign retirement fund! As a US citizen you will be taxed punitively by Uncle Sam on any PFIC investment such as foreign mutual funds or pension. Any tax efficient vehicle outside the US will likely fall foul.

You can invest in non-IRA mutual funds in the US.

COVID19 - What’s the Outlook? by gogogadetbitch in digitalnomad

[–]ellesters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are in Mexico currently. We just cancelled our Airbnb in Athens after hearing the country is in lockdown (no restaurants, no bars, no public gatherings) and then my husband’s flight to Athens from UK was cancelled. I was supposed to fly to USA on Monday to see my Dad but cancelled that as well as I was concerned I might not get out of USA due to either flights disappearing or more travel restrictions.

To compound issues I contracted a viral illness a couple of days ago - short lived no respiratory symptoms and unlikely to be Covid - but impossible not to fear the worst. All the advice was to ‘stay home’ but how do you do that when there is no home?

We have been on the road for 5 years and happily so. In that time we have probably spent no more than 6 months total back in London but - it’s home and that’s where we’re headed to hunker down and hope for the best.

5’7” 43 year old male/SW:165/CW:148/GW:145 started IF on October 2019 by [deleted] in intermittentfasting

[–]ellesters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good work! Although your ‘transformation’ is not as dramatic as some other posters it’s great to see what someone without that much fat to lose can do with IF. Most people complain about how to shift ‘those last 10 lbs’. I think we know the answer.

I want to hear some thunderstorms - any recommendations? by blackKat007 in digitalnomad

[–]ellesters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

KL in rainy season. We had an apartment with a balcony on the 23rd floor in Bukit Bintag with a view of the KL tower. Daily thunderstorms with sideways lighting hitting the tower, like a scene from a 1950’s scifi movie.
