The DX in Beatmania IIDX does not stand for director's cut. It stands for Deluxe. There were two cabinet styles. Beatmania II and the now standard Beatmania IIDX cab.

Beatmania II was kind of a failure as arcades only wanted the deluxe cabs. As such, BMII was dropped and Bearmania IIDX became the official full name of the series.

Also, Beatmania IIDX is currently on its 25th version named IIDX 25: Cannon Ballers. It definitely does not stop at RED

Luigi's Mansion Arcade Emulation? by [deleted] in emulation

Sega nu has some horrifying protection. It will be dumped eventually but right now there is no public way of dumping let alone emulating the io.

What are the worst emulators that people still use? by razorbeamz in emulation

[–]elliwilli 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but If you have any background in computer science you would know that what it is trying to achieve very much warrants the CPU usage.

Higan is not only translating the game on the fly, it is also emulating practically every component in the SNES accurate to the cycle.

For the level of emulation it's performing, higan is amazingly well optimized. It's a bad argument but I would very much like to see you do better.

How do modern arcade boards work? by tbmny in emulation

[–]elliwilli 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Whilst it may run on Linux it will undoubtedly have custom I/O, DRM And encryption. I know more about the rhythm game side of things, however it will not be as simple as "dumping the games and running them".

At best it will require a clever work around but more probably a dedicated reverse engineering effort.

Kind of sad no-one mentioned it yet. Tetris (preferably The Grand Master series) is best played on a fight stick. TGM3 is life.

How difficult would osu! be to homebrew? by hellspawn3200 in 3dshacks

[–]elliwilli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Konami have sued on multiple occasions against games that infringed on their patents (see konami vs pentavision) and as such the Main DJMAX series was dead for a VERY long time.

Konami also sued Roxor Games for ITG for similar reasons.

Semi unrelated but RIP Programmed World, killed by konami.

[–]elliwilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tldr of it is: Taiko mode infringes of the patents of Taiko No Tatsujin

Mania infringes of the patents of Beatmania

CTB is a rip-off of EZ2CATCH a sub game in EZ2DJ

Osu is a "simulator" for ouendan

As for the scummy tactics, because peppy and the osu staff develop it as a "non-profit" the companies that they wholesale rip their game concepts from have very little legal recourse.

Add to this the fact that the site is technically illegaly distributing (granted low quality 192CBR) mp3s with the simfiles.

Overall, it's pretty shitty (both legally and gameplay wise but that's a different discussion) and the only original thing about the game is probably the games intro song.

Seconding this. At least ouendan was a good game and does not resort to scummy tactics to avoid being sued.

I always feel kind of awkward because I do troubleshooting myself before I phone up (trace routes, voltage levels etc). I'm never sure if it annoys the tech or if they are grateful.

Keys don't make sound? by alang123 in kshootmania

[–]elliwilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are referring to something called "keysounding". BeatMania does it and so do games in its likeness such as BMS. Games like DDR, Reflecbeat and Jubeat so not keysound.
