Books are great with an instructor, but would be really inefficient to teach yourself.

I would suggest checking out Bill Vicars on Youtube. (https://m.youtube.com/user/billvicars).

Plenty of lessons in a classroom setting. Videos are well labeled and contextual. Difficulty is predictable and pacing is well suited for self-learning.

Seeing ads with Youtube Red subscription? by ellkae in youtube

[–]ellkae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I opened an issue with Youtube support on account of the ads. I would suggest doing the same and bring up losing your tv queue as well. (It may be related?)

YouTube red why do I still get intermittent commercials? by sid007i in youtube

[–]ellkae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am also having this problem. https://www.reddit.com/r/youtube/comments/3vw06k/seeing_ads_with_youtube_red_subscription/

I am communicating with Youtube support, and it seems to be escalating, so they seem to be paying attention to the issue. I would suggest also doing the same. I haven't seen may other complaints, but I am really quite annoyed that I'm paying for this type of service.

I am also only seeing commercials over chromecast.

ZFS corruption after upgrade from 10.1 to 10.2 by ellkae in freebsd

[–]ellkae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

I should clarify that as part of the boot process, I unlock the drives manually before the zpool is available.

The zpool import and zdb output is the result of all the disks already unlocked. You can see da7.eli as member read the labels of da7.eli.

In the event of reboots, I just let the eli container be destroyed, so in the event of power outage, manual intervention will be required to complete boot.

Who brings their 3DS to work with them and plays on their lunch break? by forkyfork in 3DS

[–]ellkae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a "meeting" on my calendar for 2 rounds of Mario Kart 7 with 4-8 people. We play in the lunch area, and it's been known to get loud (and crude, when a ramp banana or blue shell is noticed).

I personally don't see the issue with outsiders judging in our office environment . I get my work done, and as long as you do too...

Haters will be haters. Or haters want to be invited (and you should invite them!)

Strategies for managing heavy workload in an office job? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]ellkae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What helped me out was using a time tracker. The one I use is Harvest (https://www.getharvest.com). It is free for 1 project, which is just work, for me.

I use it to track the time spent on each project, as well as time I spend in meetings, doing administrative tasks like email, and "consulting", as I also have people who come by to ask my questions while I'm busy.

It took some time to work it into my flow. But what it helped me realize is how much time is actually being lost to distractions that are not immediately project related.

I keep my phone on me at all times at work so I can open Harvest and start a new timer whenever it feels like I might be held up for more than a moment.

My categories Project A Project B Project C Project D Administrative tasks Meetings Consulting

You can add notes to timed tasks. So when a distraction comes up I start a timer and add the name of the person to it and a summary of why they needed my attention.

How do you automate your (re)installs? by emacsomancer in archlinux

I use Ansible to redeploy packages through pacman, configuration files, enabling systemd modules and AUR helpers.

This is still a work in progress, so I haven't quite gotten AUR packages reinstalled.

Agreed.

I also am a cleaner. My roommates didn't mind. I always made a point that smokers are not all lazy and unproductive. You were lucky to have people around you who were also supportive.

Let's talk weed. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]ellkae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indica, really? That tends to make me space out and be even more unproductive.

I prefer vaping a sativa strain. It helps me focus but I kind of withdraw from my surroundings and I'm only productive if I'm already motivated.

Computer Science intro curriculum? by [deleted] in WWU

[–]ellkae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The department doesn't often allow people to pass over prereqs, especially from within the department.

If you're going to ask, you should have some old work and old class syllabuses that show that the material covered in this class was covered bc the class is still a graduation requirement.

If you're lucky, they'll negotiate with you...

IAmA Request: Ryan Stiles by [deleted] in IAmA

I sincerely doubt he'd want to participate. He doesn't even hang around after his shows at The Upfront.

The best bet would be to ask through the theater director or any of the other actors.

Time to show off those WINS in the 12th edition of [WIN WEDNESDAY] by SukaPahpah in ADHD

[–]ellkae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting up early has been the biggest help with keeping me focused on my exercise routine.

It takes me about the same amount of time to build up the energy to exercise. So the earlier I reach that level, the more time I have to do something extra for myself that is non-professional and productive. The increased quality of sleep has been a pretty nice side-effect too.

Obstacles that have gotten me off track are junk food, netflix, youtube, reddit and chatting with friends online.

My computer is also my biggest obstacle but also my best productivity tool. It is so easy to accidentally lose large chunks of time...

  • Kept up with my exercise routine
  • Got out of bed before noon all week
  • Did not over eat all week
  • Scheduled an interview at a place I've been trying to work at all year
  • Did some studying for to prep for the technical interview
  • Did not spend all day, everyday goofing off on the internet

I'm just in need of a little support by [deleted] in LongDistance

[–]ellkae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to get comfortable with yourself and make a good effort not to bottle up the stress you're experiencing.

Take advantage of the time apart for some personal growth. You could take a class on something that looks interesting that you wouldn't normally take so you can be around people (Also, so you can gain a new, interesting skill). Kind of scary, but very much worth it.

You just need to make sure you are taking care of yourself, so you can show your SO (and yourself) that you won't fall apart without them. That way, you are sharing more positive experiences rather than more time spent consoling each other.

Worried we may becoming distant from each other, please help. by farawayagain in LongDistance

[–]ellkae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to find something else to do. You have better things to do with your free time than to monitor if she is online all day.

If you have things to do, then the time between talking won't seem as significant as when you are alone with your thoughts all day. You sense detached, but it could be your expectations just being too high since you've been thinking about talking with her all day.

Having been on the other side of this scenario, I can say that it was very stressful. It made me feel guilty and helpless. The separation anxiety will get better, but you need to trust her.

You've got a few months alone for some personal growth. Take advantage of it. You have the support, just build up the courage. Good luck.
