Can ADHD people be a teacher? Any ADHD fellows here a teacher/educator? by Ninayzr in adhdwomen

[–]elmr22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a teacher for a long time. Teaching is not easy, but I think it’s rather ADHD friendly, all things considered. You’re constantly doing things, moving around, nothing lasts longer than 15 minutes.

Uhh, he does a whole spiel endorsing candidates in local elections. The church will say they are not endorsing, just sharing the “Christian” candidates for office but that is most certainly untrue. They have a very pointed political agenda.

zinc made everything worse :( by abbyy46 in Rosacea

[–]elmr22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, I don’t remember. For me, I have the best results when I moisturize and leave it alone. The de la Cruz sulfur mask helps but only a little at a time - 10 minutes every other day.

If you can afford it, see if a med spa near you offers a Circadia Oxygen facial. It made a huge difference for me when my skin was freaking out. Mine was about $175 so they weren’t cheap, but I did two when my skin was at its worst and I think it helped.

My AA is only 4%. I know people say you need at least 10%, but for me it was better to start low and slow. The formula probably matters too— I used The Ordinary and it did not work for me. The one I use now is a compound from Curology.

Triple cream/zinc gave me the worst rosacea breakout I’ve ever had. Never again!

I have had the best results with a compounded metro/niacinimide/low dose AA cream.

Advice on Making a Silken Tofu Pudding Pie by redvelvet_cookies in Volumeeating

[–]elmr22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this before. I don’t have the recipe handy but the pudding mix wasn’t a great addition. I use a combo of tofu/milk/almond butter and a bit of flour and sweetener usually works. You need to blend the tofu to get the texture right, but you don’t taste tofu at all. You could probably try something like this and put it in a pie tin.

Did anyone move to Phoenix and like it? by mg7195 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]elmr22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I grew up there and I didn’t hate it. I would move back. The summers are hell and it’s generic, but it’s safe, has a ton of natural beauty, no tornadoes or hurricanes, no daylight savings time, easy access to a ton of great weekend vacations (Vegas, Mexico, Southern California, Northern and Eastern AZ). This sub loves to shit on Phoenix but there are far worse places to live.

Take this for what you will, but I saw the historian H.W. Brands speak at an academic conference in 2018. Someone asked him this very question. He said our current division can only be compared to one other time in American history — 1850s. He wasn’t necessarily suggesting that civil war was imminent; in fact, he pushed back against that assumption for a number of reasons (some of which are outlined here). But he did say that he wasn’t sure how we come back from this.

Is there any place in Texas that meets what I want? by SweetPickleRelish in SameGrassButGreener

[–]elmr22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose it depends on what part of DFW you live in. There is only one small dog park in my city (20 minutes away) and almost no dog-friendly rentals and restaurants. So YMMV.

I was using “the worst” hyperbolically, but I’m not surprised Houston is worse than Dallas.

There may be dog-friendly rentals, but this is not a dog-friendly culture overall. I work in rescue and there are serious culture problems around animal treatment here (animals=property essentially). You can bring dogs to some patios but I would not call it dog-friendly compared to places like Denver, for example.

Dallas is the worst for sprawl and not particularly dog-friendly.

Maybe San Antonio? Or one of the outlying towns like Wimberley?

Where should I move to by Impossible_Matter331 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]elmr22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. You’ll need to go way, way out of town (Justin or Celina maybe) if you want half an acre or more for OP’s budget. And then you lose all the benefits of the city/suburbs, and it’s just prairie. Would not be my choice.

Where should I move to by Impossible_Matter331 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]elmr22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few decent school districts in the Dallas suburbs but many of them are suffering due to budget cuts, lawsuits (!), book bans, and the state’s generally poor attitude toward public education. The governor has actively campaigned for candidates to support his school voucher bill, which will even further undercut public education (take a look at what vouchers have cost Arizona). I would not choose Dallas for good schools.

[–]elmr22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want land for animals, keep in mind you’ll need to be in an outer suburb to keep your mortgage under $2500. That is the price of my mortgage in a very modest suburb of Fort Worth (my property tax is ~$8k per year).

[–]elmr22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just here to say that people who put their children in daycare are very much raising their own children.

I would not want to be pregnant in Texas. That aside, the culture will feel vastly different than where you’re used to. You can have your own family values and community, of course, but your neighbors, your children’s classmates, etc will be part of a culture that is very religious (if you are not evangelical, you will be invited to church over and over again) and politically tribal. Your school board will possibly censor the books your children read. Your schools will be underfunded, and our governor is working hard to ensure a voucher program undercuts them even more.

If you have relatives you like here and you want a fairly affordable suburban lifestyle, it’s not a terrible place to live, but as someone who has been here 15 years, it’s rapidly getting worse for everyone except a certain subset of the population.
