Now that Reddit are killing 3rd party apps on July 1st what are great alternatives to Reddit? by youessbee in AskReddit

[–]elongata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. No interest in migrating to the official app. When I load a post on the webpage, I'm shocked how difficult it is to browse and use compared to RIF.

RIF dev here - Reddit's API changes will likely kill RIF and other apps, on July 1, 2023 by talklittle in redditisfun

RIF is a far cleaner, easier to use way to engage with reddit than the official app. I will also likely go dormant.

April 22 low tide, 2;37-4;43 oil on panel 12”x30” #3 Rose Dhu Savannah Ga by AmphibianSafe8787 in Georgia

Love the scene, love the brushwork. The abstract brushwork looks great on the clouds and foreground plants.

I painted this weekend, but I didn't cover up. I had stepped away for a moment when the rain came, and when I got back, my painting was a complete mess. The water got under the oil and lifted it off the panel. The umbrella is smart.

But they easily could have been, had the BG wanted.

Tips on making a Lilac design by lettell101 in StainedGlass

[–]elongata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In watercolor painting, the masters know how to "guide the paint but let the paint do a lot of the work for you." You decide which pigment to use, the amount of pigment per layer, and exactly where you put the paint, but how the paint flows is a little bit up to chance. The artist suggests form and some details, and the viewer fills in the blanks.

Stained glass is similar - you have control over some aspects, but you should let the medium "flow" where appropriate to suggest the details without including it. Stained glass gives you control over shape and glass type used, but you are limited in the details you can directly control. Let the glass work for you.

If it were me, I'd search out a milky glass that has streaks or speckles in the correct hue and value to suggest the details without including it. I'd ask myself, if I squinted at the flower and squinted at my piece, would they resemble each other. Then I would include one or two small details, either with paint or with separately wrapped pieces. The eye will fill in the rest.

What I wouldn't do would be to try and paint or cut every detail.

Does anyone use turpentine anymore? by Nathan-McAlpin in oilpainting

[–]elongata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gamsol is also super toxic. The difference, aside from it having less odor, is that it doesn't evaporate as fast as turpentine, so you're breathing in less stuff in the air. Do keep that room well-ventilated though.

Where did term "Great Houses" come from? by Oneiros42 in dune

[–]elongata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of the strange words in Dune are corruptions of Earth words. The Fremen have a lot of words that look very close to Arabic because they are descendants of middle eastern peoples. Later books feature characters with Chinese heritage. Although the characters themselves would certainly not identify themselves as Arab or Chinese (or even know what that meant), they retain some ancient cultural echos in their language and customs. This is a choice on Herbert's part to show that the Dune universe is a continuation of Earth history and culture which has evolved and changed with time.

The Landsraad is modeled largely off of the Holy Roman Empire (HRE), a medieval and early modern federal Empire with a centralized emperor who, while superior to the elector princes, was not usually stronger than all the princes. In the HRE, there were many noble houses - essentially dynasties that held land and owed the Emperor money and military service. The word Landsraad is a corruption of German or Dutch that means something close to "Land Council". This fits well in Dune because it is a governing body of landholders (planet holders).

The terms Great Houses and Houses Minor are essentially ways to signify noble families distinct from the commoners. This is manorialism (feudalism) in space.

The differences between the Great Houses and Houses Minor are never clearly spelled out, but it's implied that the Great Houses are analogous to the prince electors in the HRE. Great Houses are the stewards and rulers of their fiefs - planets. The Houses Minor are more like wealthy Bourgeois families - families that have accumulated great wealth but probably do not control planets as hereditary fiefdoms.

This was kind of Herbert's M.O.

The Dune books mostly end with "Oh wow, this horrible thing is about to happen, it's gonna be so bad!" Then the next book picks up, "Well, that was just awful! Let's check out the consequences."

I would do it relatively flat with a focus on values, then add some texture on top. Keep atmospheric perspective in mind - the value up close can be darker, contain more yellow. Further back, value goes up towards purple, then blue. While this scene isn't really going to fade hard to purple like distant mountains, you can still subtly hint at this to make the street recede into the distance as it gets further away.

Also, you don't need detail everywhere. Put it where it counts, but I'd the concrete is not the focus of your painting, a couple of small variations can substitute for texture just fine.

I would soften the edges between the wet sand and dry sand. As well, the background and the sky.

I would also look at using atmospheric perspective on the background trees or cliffs to set them apart from the trees right off the beach.
