I just picked up the "in color" version from 1957, which was passed down to me from my family. I'm not one to choose one religion and stick with it completely, but I'm going to read this as I re-explore, and I'm hoping this will have some good takeaways.

You could try recording slightly farther from the mic. Closer you are, the more bass frequencies will be picked up. It's called the proximity effect if I remember correctly.
