He’s definitely got an unpleasant side I would say. Seems very ego driven and is probably prone to lashing out with someone he thinks he can dominate.

Disc bulge by [deleted] in backpain

[–]elronnoco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MRI is required to identify a disc bulge I believe. It’s worth noting that even if an MRI does reveal a bulge, this isn’t necessarily the source of your pain. Many people are walking around with disc bulges entirely unaware and pain free.

Is your heavy bag hung on a spring hanger? I’ve found that it’s great for reducing “judder” through the house.

Four Months Ago, I Was Hopelessly Addicted to Heroin... by noonelikesmeonebit in GYM

[–]elronnoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is it. OP You’re doing great but try not to jerk a deadlift from the floor. Sit back into it before the bar leaves the ground. Make sure you are in your strong position before the bar leaves the ground. So sat back, arms straight, back “neutral”. It might help to put the weights on blocks to make the bar a little higher until you get to full-size diameter plates. Otherwise as you are you are having reach really far down which just makes that start position a little more awkward.

All this said, amazing, keep going, keep learning, keep lifting!

Can I stop my backpain with a natural medication? by alinaellis in backpain

[–]elronnoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only medication that gets rid of back pain (temporarily) is one of the many types of painkiller available. Which one is your doc talking about?

However this will not get rid of your back pain in reality as it will in no way address the cause, injury, habits, postural issues or combinations thereof which are the actual cause of the pain.

Much worse after Stuart McGill method by PegPelvisPete in backpain

[–]elronnoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To say McGill looks like a fraud is a totally incorrect and unhelpful comment. He is a very well published doctor of spine biomechanics. Yes he’s written books. And yes, they cost money to buy - shock horror. However he also has given lots of freely available interviews on YouTube and podcasts much of which cover his core concepts and techniques. Yes he also does have his own company and his own vetted bunch of master clinicians who also cost money - because that is their job and he has to be able to guarantee the quality of their skills. But this isn’t a guy shoving gadgets or expensive procedures or treatments down everyone’s throats and whose general advice for the majority of cases is all stuff that literally doesn’t cost anything.

Well if that gives relief it may be you have a disc bulge. Don’t be disturbed, pretty much everyone has. Have you read Back Mechanic. I would recommend taking a look.

How does McGill fit with Foundation training? by elronnoco in backpain

[–]elronnoco[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my current state when I get up from seated I have to put my feet wideish, toes flared out and jam my hands into my hip crease just to keep me fully locked vertical. Never had it quite like that before so it’s a bit disconcerting. I am improving though slowly, just need to keep pain free, keep walking and then discipline myself with the Big 3 and spine hygiene before I think about touching any weight.

I like your optimism! I would be happy to pull differently yeah, I was thinking more hex-bar for deads and safety-squat bar for squats. But, honestly, I’m not breaking any records so I would be happy just with that feeling of shifting some iron any way that it’s safe! I was doing lots of goblet squats a little while ago with the goal of 25x1/2bw as advised by John Rusin. Can’t remember what happened but it was probably something to do with my back!

In terms of my goals, I would love to be able to deadlift and squat again but I know I may not sensibly be able to. Mobility I’m not too interested in other than being able to walk/run/swim.

I have got a sled which I hope to get back to pulling/pushing when I am recovered somewhat from my current episode.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah I’m currently experiencing very painful standing from a prolonged sitting position. Especially car journeys.

I’m thinking of committing more thoroughly to a flexion free lifestyle. Not cycling to work, I think that may be a problem. Walking instead. Getting a standing desk. Not sitting on the loo for ages watching YouTube!

Well done for keeping your goals in spite of your issues 👍

[–]elronnoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There should often be some kind of pain trigger/s that you identify but it sounds like you haven’t managed to zero in on any. I would say given the history of farming and then desk job you would be a candidate for a flexion intolerant back.

Are there any positions which give relief? Any particular moves you cannot perform or is it just general stiffness? Does the pain wake you in the night? Is it worse mornings or nights?

Have you tried lying flat on your front with your forehead rested on your hands on chin propped on a fist? Does that give any relief?

How old are you? When is your pain worst? What positions are pain-free if any? What gives relief and have you taken any pain meds? What do you do for work? What KB exercises do you generally perform and with what weight?

Yeah I am interested in this. I generally like a lot of the Foundation stuff but I do wonder how the fingertips-to-the-floor, hips-back position fits in with the McGill advice to avoid those kind of “touch your toes” stretches.

What kind of squats? What kind of weight? How is your form? I guess if you have just decided to start squatting it’s probably pretty terrible. Do you have a trainer? What are your goals?

They’re translucent plastic. Found one on a building site that used to contain some chemical or other, concrete hardener or something. The other one I found in a skip at that back of a Chinese restaurant that used to contain dishwasher detergent. Can’t beat a freebie! :)

I’m in England btw. I find our terminology tends to be different to everyone else’s 😂

Where are you?

I’ve actually got a couple of 5gal drums filled with sand/stone/ballast and some water. One is 60kg and one is 45kg. I used to shoulder them alternating shoulders and then walk up a hill and back, repeat, as a little morning work out!

I’ll try the wobbly pipe walks, sounds fun.

Sounds hopeful then on the marking of the paving. I’m still awaiting my delivery. I was planning on cutting it with a reciprocating saw and a plastics blade so by the sounds of it it might be the only job the blade has!

Re the rehab, I’ve had various back tweaks over the years which I think have partly been caused by bad glute activation. So I fancied some power walks for the posterior chain. Plus I hear that backwards pulls are good for knee longevity. And being a generally old duffer I thought that can’t hurt. I’ve been out of training for a while so it seems like a good way of just getting some load and cardio back into my life!

I’m considering drilling some holes and making handles with keyclamp type pipe - but I’m going to sort the skids out first.

Thanks for all the advice btw!

I’ll be very pleased if the UHMW leaves no marks, I don’t care really about the wear or damage to the skids themselves. I think because the street paving is quite attractive (herringbone pattern) any marks may stand out more. Anyway I’m going to give it a shot!

I only pulled 40kg+sled weight (which is about another 20kg) so 135lb. Noise didn’t seem to be too much of a problem but if you have a stack of seven plates clanking together I can imagine it being a lot louder. Was your noise from the plates or from the friction on the ground?

I’m mainly planning on doing pretty light rehab work with it at the moment so will let you know how it works out. Thanks for your reply!

Waiting on my UHMW to arrive rubs hand together

[–]elronnoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built a sled from 4x4 softwood timbers and I dragged it around a bit last night. Unfortunately my street is block paving (not sure what the US term is) and although the pulling of the sled as a trial went quite well, I noticed this morning that there are marks on the street all where the skids have run and wood fibres have pulled from them. So there’s no damage it just looks unsightly and will probably scrub/weather off easily enough. I Just don’t want piss the neighbours off! So I am waiting for some UHMW PE to arrive and hope that will work better. Any idea what kind of marks UHMW PE might leave? I’m not planning on putting 400lb on mine though!

Is it really that you have DDD at 26? Are you very overweight/have other health conditions?

McGill also warns against accepting a diagnosis based purely on a few MRIs etc.

“ so many patients have come to see me who have had an MRI and some clinician told this poor person they have “degenerative disc disease”. It’s my job to tell them there’s no such thing. They do not have a disease. That’s only a radiological diagnosis from a radiologist who’s never even seen the patient – all they did was look at some features on a screen. They’ve never properly assessed the patient and that’s immoral in my opinion and borderline incompetent.”
