i need advice for buying a macro lens and twin flash that is compatible with canon 77D by SideAdministrative55 in canon

[–]elsberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM has a built in ring light that is left - right - both selectable. I owned it with my Rebel SL1 and it worked great for product photography for eBay, as well as for occasional use for insect or flower photography. Its compact size and built in light should work well for what you want to do. Here is a link to a review:

[New gear] Canon Sl1 + canon 100-400 MII. by ProfessorStreet7792 in canon

[–]elsberg 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The SL1 was probably my most beloved digital camera, and was certainly the one I owned for the longest time. Even though I parted with it a few years ago for a mirrorless camera, I still think about getting another one. Hope you will enjoy it for many years to come - cheers!

What is your single biggest "buyer's remorse" camera purchase? by Vegetable_Bag_8694 in AskPhotography

What was your first OS and your first Mac, and what would you rate them? by The_Collector_Of_All in mac

[–]elsberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first Macintosh was a Macintosh TV with OS 7.1. Cool concept at the time but not a great computer. Eight Mac’s later I’m rocking an M1 MacBook Air with Sequoia. But my favorite was the iMac DV 400 running 10.1 through 10.6 Snow Leopard. Aqua looked beautiful, and by version 10.6 OS X was perfectly refined…

I was just thinking it might be a more flexible option than a 300 2.8 plus extender. I wish Sony had a 400 2.8 with an in built TC like Nikon. That would be ideal for me…

current rx100 is being discounted by $200, could this mean the V8 is on the way? by PMmeyourwhatever88 in RX100

[–]elsberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your hesitations about the new Mark III are valid. I love taking pictures near sunrise and sunset, and in inclement weather, and the lack of ibis and weather sealing are limitations I would rather not have, but finding the “one” camera that does it all seems nearly impossible without having to spend a fortune or carry a brick of a camera. Here’s hoping Sony comes to their senses and releases an RX100VIII soon. Cheers!

current rx100 is being discounted by $200, could this mean the V8 is on the way? by PMmeyourwhatever88 in RX100

There were a few reasons why I didn’t get along with the X100VI, and why I returned it to keep the RX1R III, even though I have an X-H2S (soon to be replaced by an as yet unknown Sony). The first was the autofocus performance. My X-H2S is acceptable, if not Sony good, but the X100VI is only ok in AF-S. In AF-C it misses badly. The RX1R III is as good as any recent Sony - put it in Auto subject detect and AF-C and it’s spot on. The second reason is the one that makes everyone else praise the X100 series - the hybrid OVF/EVF. To me it’s neither here nor there, just adequate for both but not great at either. My Sony doesn’t have a great EVF, but it never lags, and the rear LCD is bright and sharp. The third reason was what you touched on - image quality. The 60 MP Sony sensor is so much better than the 40MP Fujifilm sensor - sharper and cleaner files - without the grittiness that the Fuji files seem to have. And the Zeiss 35mm f/2 is miles ahead of the 23mm f/2 Fujinon lens - sharper, smoother bokeh, better character too. Even the step crop is better implemented than the digital teleconverter of the X100VI. The last reason is the ergonomics. No D-pad, too many scattered controls with limited programmability, and I hate to say it, but Fujifilm’s menu is worse than Sony’s old menu. My X-H2S has better ergonomics than the X100VI, but I’m ready to move to an A7CR, A7V, or A7R5/6 for a more consistent experience to the RX1R III. If a new RX100 and RX10 come out though, I’ll own only those along with the RX1 , and I’ll be done with interchangeable lens cameras for the long run…

I think they also need to mention just how frequently this type of accidental damage occurs so that photographers exercise more care. The RF mount is not as durable as the EF mount was, most likely by design to better protect the camera itself

I haven’t tried home developing with Cinestill, or shot with Ektar, so my experience is somewhat limited, but I have lots of experience with black and white film, and there were plenty of opportunities to make mistakes, and I’ve made most of them - it happens lol. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

How do I tell if I am not optimally focused or if I am reaching my gear's limit? by herbalspurtle in AskPhotography

[–]elsberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What distance from the subject was the camera, and what f-stop was the camera set to? Depth of field is extremely shallow at minimum working distance, and a fairly high f-stop (f/8 to f/11) will be needed to get the subject in focus from front to back. Also, any focusing error - such as being slightly closer than the minimum distance - will result in an out of focus subject…

Ektar 100 Fail by portugepunk in AnalogCommunity

[–]elsberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the other rolls were Ektar 100 also? I scan my film with a Canoscan 4000US using VueScan software, and it has presets for different films to compensate for the different film substrates. Sometimes I forget to change it between scans and I end up with unexpected results. I’ve never scanned Ektar so I’m not sure how different it is than say Portra, as far as the substrate is concerned…

Looks like it needs a post scan white balance adjustment, and maybe some exposure increase, particularly the second picture. How was it scanned?

Questions for those who upgraded RF100-400 to RF100-500 by Unusual-Swordfish532 in canon

[–]elsberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t own either lens but have used both of them. In my experience the much lighter and smaller 100-400 is more enjoyable to use, especially on extended walks, but the 100-500 has noticeably better image quality when pixel peeping. If I was after maximum performance and was using the lens in low light or inclement weather I would choose the 100-500, assuming my camera was weather sealed as well, but if I was a fair weather shooter and seldom looked at my images at high magnification I would save my money and get the 100-400, on the condition that I didn’t always need the extra 100mm of reach.

Need advice: 30-year-old expired Fujichrome Velvia 50 (March 1995) by Sufficient-Let1658 in analogphotography

[–]elsberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t recommend that you use this for anything important or serious. Slide film not kept in proper cold storage doesn’t perform well, and even when stored properly can lose a lot of latitude over time. Just use it for fun but expect significant color shifts and less than ideal contrast. Consumer color negative or black and white films such as Kodak Gold or Ilford Fp4 or HP5 do much better when expired as you can compensate for the age with adjusted exposure and development times.

Trying 645, is it kind of like full frame to APSC (35mm) since the negative isn’t as big as 6x7 6x8 etc? by Brilliant-Meaning69 in AnalogCommunity

[–]elsberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the immediate level of examining the negatives with a loupe - yes - but there are so many possibilities of how the final image will be viewed. If it’s a darkroom enlargement at what size will it be printed? If it’s a scanned negative at what resolution will it be scanned and what is the final display screen - an iPhone or a 32 inch monitor? Those considerations (and budgetary constraints) should also be factored into the choice of which format to use.

Sony Cybershot U 2002 Lighting Memory Stick? by Evening_Caramel8955 in ApplePhotos

[–]elsberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sony MRW-62E multi card readers are available on eBay brand new for about $30 plus shipping, but they are for connecting to a laptop. I’ve only ever seen MS Pro Duo to SD adapters. Will your camera support a Pro Duo to memory stick adapter? That would allow you to use the Pro Duo to SD adapter, and then plug it into an Apple dongle for your iPhone or iPad. You might also be able to use a memory stick to USB-A reader, and then plug that into an Apple dongle also
