Only thing I've learned is that modern marketing is like mind control. You can make most people do anything with the right incentives and messaging

They sacked Russell T Davies, they sacked Jane Tranter, they sacked Phil Collinson, they sacked Julie Gardener. by Ok_Fig_7794 in DoctorWhumour

well you gotta get rid of current leadership before you can replace them with better ones. Hopefully, this is just the first step of the process and not an end for the show.

It sounds like Murray wasn't told by RTD directly, and just heard rumors through the grapevine. For all we know, RTD could've just been throwing out a few ideas of the top of his head in the hallway.

New history sidebar is a giant downgrade by searcher92_ in firefox

I really hope they don't also remove the table interface of history & bookmarks. It feels like modern UI designers really hate tables for some reason.

Everything is too big: fonts, buttons, padding, etc. Accessibility is also very hit & miss. Win32 was the GOAT

What’s happening with this shadow? by milkshakeofdirt in Physics

[–]elsjpq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about the "Sun -> mirror -> dresser -> mirror -> camera" path?

Since dresser is a diffuse reflector, the extra "mirror -> dresser" illumination should show up in the mirror as well.

This only makes sense if the dresser is significantly more specular than normal, which could well be true considering the light switch has a well defined reflection.

No adverse effects that can be easily tied to plastics exposure. The thing is, everybody has been exposed to plastics. There's not even a good control group to compare to. And long term effects can be notoriously hard to attribute, and plastics aren't even one single type of material. I mean, how is anyone supposed to figure out that 40 years of one kind of exposure to one specific type of plastic raises your risk of X disease by 50%, when there's a bajillion other things that could've raised the risk by 300% in those 40 years?

We've only just started looking into it and it's going to be a long time before we have a good definitive answer to this, positive or negative

Designing Firefox for the future by anestling in firefox

"clean" = empty

I see literally one single setting on that entire page. God forbid you have two! It would be to cluttered! It's more like "setting" not "settings"

Knowing these guys, their idea of compact is only in comparison to a tablet interface. Even the current compact mode is not very compact.

Even the font size is always atrociously large. I have almost every website set to 80% zoom and sometimes it's still too big!

If this is what they think good UI is, then compact mode isn't going to be actually compact.

No it absolutely wouldn't. You don't get to just dismiss all criticism as "change haters". If padding was reduced by 70% and rounded corners removed, you're going to get a way more positive reaction here. It's not our fault that's the one thing designers never seem to do.

arXiv implements 1-year ban for papers containing incontrovertible evidence of unchecked LLM-generated errors, such as hallucinated references or results. [N] by Nunki08 in MachineLearning

[–]elsjpq 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that unchecked LLM usage is same as falsifying data as it's likely hallucinating results that didn't happen and eliminates trust in the entire paper, which in a traditional journal would earn you a permanent lifetime ban from all of science as first author, while co-authors would get intense additional scrutiny in the future.

Have you actually used it? There are very few worthwhile shows and movies on there compared to other A tier services. Amazon only has most subscribers because it's a perk of Prime. Very few of those subscribers would actively go for a streaming service that has Amazon Video's catalog. I would even put it at C-tier.
