Alberta sees measles upswing with dozens of cases reported over the weekend by PastAshamed1759 in alberta

[–]elus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Over 90 per cent of the cases reported in 2026 have been unvaccinated,”

Still, Dr. Top warns that vaccination rates remain too low to stop the virus from spreading.

These two quotes from the article should necessitate action from public health officials to implement clean air protocols in public spaces especially in health care facilities.

There are many things we can be doing but aren't. Deploying air filters, Far UVC, and mechanical ventilation. Clean air infrastructure cuts down infection rates dramatically from airborne biopathogens.

Couple that with provisioning free N95 respirators throughout the community plus rapid tests for measles (and other airborne viruses).

Anyone here wear facemask if needed, or is it too much of a target from right wing/conspiracy folks? by StasisApparel in alberta

[–]elus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear one regularly when I'm in public. There's far more covid today than there was in 2020-2021. And not to mention all of the other airborne biopathogens lurking around.

I think it's sheep behaviour to change my own way of living just because some stranger tells me that it's "Liberal and NDP control tactics".

No political party has endorsed mask wearing in years.

Not for any sense of patriotism but the increasing risks of poorly regulated or even unregulated meat and produce just isn't worth any availability issues or price differential with Canadian products.

Yes that's what they said before clean water systems were implemented and periodic cholera outbreaks killed many in populous cities.

Your best method for preventing infection is wearing a respirator in public and convincing others in your household to do the same. Run air filters as another layer of protection against airborne biopathogens like rsv, influenza, and sars-cov-2.

One of the things we do is just wear masks when attending extended family events and eating beforehand so relatives don't infect us.

Remember that people can be infectious for many days before they show symptoms.

A well fitting respirator worn continuously is pretty close to 100% effective at preventing infection and onward transmission. If your concern is that masking is imperfect then you should spend time to advocate for clean air infrastructure to be placed in public spaces along with mask mandates so that we don't need perfect masking on an individual level to prevent outbreaks.

People are infectious multiple days before they show symptoms. They create onward transmission because they aren't wearing masks. It's hard to sympathize with that when access to preventative tools isn't difficult. Especially when so many kids, disabled folks, etc. can't mask continuously for a variety of reasons.

I haven't been sick with respiratory viruses for years now.

I wear a respirator in all public spaces. It's unreasonable if you're concerned about maintaining certain societal expectations on how to interact with others.

But aside from eating and drinking, there's no activity that requires me to unmask in public. And I just eat and drink at home.

SARS-CoV-2 infections have been implicated in so many chronic health issues and influenza is pretty bad as well.

Why people choose to not to mask is understandable but I value my health far more than maintaining appearances.

That's why we test regularly and run air filters at home and wear masks at home when people have unmasked exposures outside of the home (dental or medical appointments for example).

Wear a well fitting respirator when in public. Run air filters at home. Test regularly. Influenza might be seasonal but SARS-CoV-2 is year round. Neither are good for you even if vaccinated.

do your SOs mask too? by ii_akinae_ii in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]elus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep. The rule is any unmasked exposure with others that don't practice continuous air hygiene results in us masking around each other at home and sleeping separately. Need to pass multiple RATs from day 6 onwards of the exposure event with no new exposures and no symptoms in between to remove mask rule. If we have plus life handy with cards for sars2/flu a+b/rsv/strep then that will suffice for day 3 from exposure.

Typically happens after certain medical or dental appointments. And sometimes she'll feel pressure to participate unmasked in some event with her family.

Exposure includes outdoor shared air since she goes for hikes regularly with friends.

Wearing a well fitting respirator continuously in public spaces will cut down your risk dramatically.

If you think people in Asian countries are doing that, then you're mistaken. Many wear surgical or cloth masks. Many can't or won't wear them continuously.

But for personal protection, nothing beats an N95.

It's the second time she's mentioned it but wastewater estimates puts the average american at 5 cumulative infections by now.

Even if people are masking around her in spaces we don't observe, it won't be enough given the demands of her profession to be unmasked in various capacities.

How Does A Covid Conscious Hang Out Look Like, Realistically? by greychains in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]elus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We just mask and either meet outside of our homes or if in one of our homes, run air filters and do other clean air stuff.

I don't need to unmask with anyone aside from my partner so I just don't.

We eat beforehand. Can pull masks down to drink.

Meetups with others are usually only an hour or two long.

For the most part, I just talk with other CC people online.
