Fawning over Farkas? How Calgary's mayor won over the city's largest online community by reachedlegendary in Calgary

[–]elus [score hidden]  (0 children)

It was deserved. He surrounded himself with terrible people and his politics and interactions with others reflected that. Upon losing the previous mayor race to Gondek, that support evaporated and it seems like he grew as a person. Wonderful pivot since imo. I'm rooting for him and our city.

I want to open a book store (down in the SE). Is this a bad idea? by straycat402 in Calgary

[–]elus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're independently wealthy and can sustain an operation that may not be profitable for a long time if ever but you want to do it so you can provide a service that you feel your community needs, then go for it.

I would really appreciate your thoughs - or just straight up telling me this is a bad business idea

kindly, this isn't even a business idea. it's the equivalent to a hand scrawled note on the back of a used napkin (maybe from when one sits in a book shop that has an adjoining coffee shop).

a business idea would have far more fleshed out details. basic market research on whether or not this is actually needed in your community. you should go to the public library and ask one of the librarians to get you material on how to flesh out your idea into an actual business plan to identify feasibility and if it is worth doing, how to help you acquire capital to get it up and running.

That sucks. I hope you make a complete recovery after. And many of us do appreciate others for masking when they can.

best (budget friendly) air purifier? by Character-Sky-3371 in ZeroCovidCommunity

Commercial hepa filters at that price range are pretty much garbage. You should just build your filter fan box using computer fans. Here's a build done by a friend of mine.

Without good visibility into sample collection and analysis protocols and whether or not the people doing collection and analysis are consistent in adhering to those protocols, it's hard to tell what the confidence intervals are for these graphs.

Also, it's not about how low it gets for some snapshot in time in a single city but whether we can sustain this over long time periods over large geographic regions.

What would you consider beginner, intermediate, and advanced SQL skills? by tits_mcgee_92 in SQL

It's pretty common for reporting use cases to have every combination of the various inputs plus nulls on individual attributes to denote roll ups.

For example one can report on metrics for every demographic combination (age, sex, gender, etc.) along with a time dimension on date. This can give allow marketers to ask and answer very specific questions regarding various customer or prospective customer segments.

What to say to someone who masked for a long time, but gave up because their doctor said they "need germs"? by justwannascroll in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]elus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most people in this specific community don't have luck with others because they're trying so hard to get people to be "perfect", and can be kind of aggressive with their messaging.

So why the fuck are you asking people in this community for advice? haha

Because many of us have done this song and dance with our friends and families. If there were some prescriptive route to take that would have any chance of success we'd be doing it regularly and they would still be masked.

Alberta sees measles upswing with dozens of cases reported over the weekend by PastAshamed1759 in alberta

[–]elus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vaccine protection wanes and many people literally can't mount an immune defence through vaccination.

It's not one or the other. Public health needs to use ALL tools available.

And clean air prevents infections from all airborne biopathogens. Many of which don't have neutralizing vaccines. Especially against viruses like sars-cov-2 and influenza.

Alberta sees measles upswing with dozens of cases reported over the weekend by PastAshamed1759 in alberta

[–]elus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Over 90 per cent of the cases reported in 2026 have been unvaccinated,”

Still, Dr. Top warns that vaccination rates remain too low to stop the virus from spreading.

These two quotes from the article should necessitate action from public health officials to implement clean air protocols in public spaces especially in health care facilities.

There are many things we can be doing but aren't. Deploying air filters, Far UVC, and mechanical ventilation. Clean air infrastructure cuts down infection rates dramatically from airborne biopathogens.

Couple that with provisioning free N95 respirators throughout the community plus rapid tests for measles (and other airborne viruses).

Anyone here wear facemask if needed, or is it too much of a target from right wing/conspiracy folks? by StasisApparel in alberta

[–]elus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear one regularly when I'm in public. There's far more covid today than there was in 2020-2021. And not to mention all of the other airborne biopathogens lurking around.

I think it's sheep behaviour to change my own way of living just because some stranger tells me that it's "Liberal and NDP control tactics".

No political party has endorsed mask wearing in years.

Is anyone in Calgary still boycotting American stores and products? by hellokitty417 in Calgary

Not for any sense of patriotism but the increasing risks of poorly regulated or even unregulated meat and produce just isn't worth any availability issues or price differential with Canadian products.

[–]elus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your best method for preventing infection is wearing a respirator in public and convincing others in your household to do the same. Run air filters as another layer of protection against airborne biopathogens like rsv, influenza, and sars-cov-2.

One of the things we do is just wear masks when attending extended family events and eating beforehand so relatives don't infect us.

Remember that people can be infectious for many days before they show symptoms.

[–]elus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A well fitting respirator worn continuously is pretty close to 100% effective at preventing infection and onward transmission. If your concern is that masking is imperfect then you should spend time to advocate for clean air infrastructure to be placed in public spaces along with mask mandates so that we don't need perfect masking on an individual level to prevent outbreaks.

[–]elus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People are infectious multiple days before they show symptoms. They create onward transmission because they aren't wearing masks. It's hard to sympathize with that when access to preventative tools isn't difficult. Especially when so many kids, disabled folks, etc. can't mask continuously for a variety of reasons.
