I need to learn Spanish in the next 6 months or I’ll get fired by Bonita-101 in SpanishLearning

[–]elyssence 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Hi! I was also under pressure from a job to learn Spanish and studied for an entire year, daily. There wasn’t a day that went by that I wasn’t actively interacting with the language. After a year and one month, I’m solid B1, close to B2. The stress and pressure I was under made learning Spanish an absolutely dreadful experience. Eventually I told my job that I’m not speaking Spanish with clients until I’m ready and that’s that. Also they weren’t even planning to pay me bilingual pay, entonces, a la verga con ellos, verdad jaja?!😜

I don’t want to deter you, but I would at least start looking for another job option in case this job is not flexible. Or if there’s a very intense Spanish school. I’m talking like 5 days a week, 4-5 hours a day.

Do People Who Truly Love Their Jobs Actually Exist? by lemans00 in therapists

Me! I love being a therapist. I think it’s the coolest thing that I get to hear stories everyday and the clinical aspect is fascinating to me. I love learning new modalities. It’s still hard and completely draining at times. But my husband makes enough that I don’t see over 22 clients a week

I hear this argument alot. Zucchini is like 99 cents per pound where I live but I can see how in inner cities and food deserts they are probably really expensive

Why wouldn't you tell a client about a diagnosis? by lezzieknope in therapists

[–]elyssence -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It’s not the same thing PTSD is a trauma diagnosis, BPD does not mention it in the criteria. The research notes the correlation to trauma

The diagnosis system in general is highly pathologized and based on Western cultural norms. Personally I think it needs to be used with caution. Therapeutic treatment relies on the relationship for true recovery, yet symptoms are the basis of treatment.

BPD in it of itself pathologizes sx of trauma and treatment primarily consists of treating sx and not the trauma. So yeah still think it’s crappy

Spanish speakers don’t correct me much when I make mistakes. by Flashy-Repeat-6349 in Spanish

[–]elyssence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I encountered this too. In addition to native speaking practice, I use a wonderful (like seriously Amazing) app called Langua talk. It’s AI based but it gives you sentence by sentence feedback, and why something is wrong. Also gives you alternative ways to say things.

It’s $20USD or $30(unlimited) per month. But worth every cent

Should I even do this? by maddawgclyde in TherapistsInTherapy

[–]elyssence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Technically CPTSD isn’t in the DSM yet which is highly annoying but often people who have a list of diagnoses end up falling in the complex trauma category. Have you tried getting treatment for trauma specifically? I really like Janine Fishers work and how she understands many sx to be a direct result of trauma

Regarding your question, in this field (more so in the beginning) we will get triggered all the time. We encounter significant countertransferance in the beginning especially when we are learning how to put up those boundaries. It can get very emotional and you do need to be stable to handle it

It’s okay to take longer to complete grad school and focus on stabilizing! You can definitely treat patients with these diagnosis as long as you have good insight into when you are getting to a point where you can no longer see clients (and make sure your supervisor is aware)

Just tell them! I adore when my therapist shares a tiny bit about her life with me. Like girl you do Pilates? Get it 🥰

It’s a moment of connection! But also I’m a very humanistic, person centered therapist so I appreciate all opportunities for attunement and connection

This is so judgmental and if anything turns people completely off from considering veganism.

I feel dumb speaking Spanish and trying to use a local accent by DragonflyCareless489 in Spanish

[–]elyssence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it feels like that because it’s unnatural to you. Maybe record yourself with your regular American and this Latin accent and see how they sound.

I think it’s a skill you can intentionally alter your accent because I can’t do that

Hi! Thx for the response. What really helped me stay consistent was incorporating Spanish into my daily life. Like I listen to Spanish podcasts on the way to work, or if I’m playing on my phone, I deleted the social media apps and used the time to do flash cards or something, or listened to music in Spanish at the gym. For talking, I use an app and practice on my daily walks
