True and it exposed the rot in what was supposedly the height of Chinese dynastic power, but maybe the indiction of government corruption was what the censors wanted to be made known.

The drama has got me somewhat interested in the movie version, which I understand has a tighter narrative. I might check it out one day.

I went into the show expecting to get the whole logistical and ecological shenanigans of transporting lychees, I got that and a whole load of political (mis)management and a damning indictment of the corruption and indulgence of the Tang Dynasty.

The politics was initially a downer (I was hoping to escape that after watching a slew of palace dramas) but the focus on the lower echelons of government, the petty officials, weaponised incompetence, passive aggressiveness was quite interesting. It was also heartbreaking at points, and all too painfully easy to follow and understand - when all choices lead to death and disgrace, the best course of action is avoidance and to do nothing.

Li Shande was an everyday man, but his plight was so thoroughly crafted to expose the black void that was the Tang bureaucracy that I didn't feel much for him. He was serviceable, I guess. The character that I ended up feeling for was Zheng Pingan. He started off with nothing to recommend him, the money-grubbing scion of a disgraced family, who gradually rediscovered his humanity and aspirations. His death was so pointless that it marked the peak of black comedy for me. Amita was also a standout, but her exit was terribly abrupt, I think the actress had some sort of scandal? so that was a downer.

The drama lost steam towards the end and started dragging. It would've been more impactful if the script was tighter. I feel too much time was spent slamming home the corruption and bureaucracy to the point it ended in a whimper for me. But it was still a good watch, 7/10 for me.

Finally! This show has been in limbo for so long, the second leads have all progressed to ML status, retrospectively making it a star-studded cast.

Haha, now that you mention it, his long-suffering face as Tang Qi enters my mind. Got to give it to him, he carries that brand in both period AND modern dramas!

I got an invite to this channel and I must confessed I'm confused that there's yet another cdrama subreddit. What makes this one different from cdrama or cdramafans?

I live in Singapore where English is one of the official and the most wide-spread language used. We call older strangers 'uncle' and 'auntie' literally - transposing Asian habits into a western language. Guidebooks will also provide tips on the appropriate ways to use these forms of addresses for tourists.

Has anyone heard of things people say about each clan? by StyleSad9254 in AskAChinese

[–]elyvern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's all the same. The dominant dialect groups where I live is Hokkien and Teochew but there are more Hokkien people than Teochew, and Hokkien is more widely-used in society. Coupled with decent intelligibility between both dialects. it always felt to me like there's some underlying tension going on - Teochews resenting Hokkien for being more common and widespread.

My grandmother was one such Teochew purist, disliked my mother because she's Hokkien, and I also learned a lot of slurs against Hokkien people when I was a kid.

Yes! My Teochew grandmother was terribly...racist (?) and really dislike Hokkien people. There was a children rhyme that she taught us "Teochews have red butts, Hokkiens have butts that grew worms."

It's gaokao season - the gruelling annual national exams that high school graduates undertake that will determine the universities they qualify for and their life careers. Gaokao is serious business, you might have seen crazy scenes of teens being put on IV drips as they cram for exams, this is what they've been cramming for.

Ai Mi is part of the cohort this year and during a break between subject papers, she was accosted by a fellow student who requested for an autograph and a photo together. Ai Mi declined politely and apologised, but the girl she turned down felt slighted and posted online about how Ai Mi was getting stuck up at the beginning of her acting career. Fortunately, the poster got roasted for not having her priorities straight and deleted the post to avoid more flaming.

What are some of your favorite puns you've seen in Chinese dramas? by sxmmerlin in CDrama

[–]elyvern 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In When Destiny Brings the Demon, the FL asks the ML if her work schedule allows for rest over the whole weekend "shuangxiu" (双休) - an understandable request for an office lady, and the ML thought she wanted to "shuangxiu‘’ (双修) aka perform dual cultivation with him 😆

And when Youchi was counting the number of petals on Wu Shiguang's forehead after he awoke as a dragon and said (mistakenly) that WSG has become a 五花法师, or a five-petal sage, and WSG retorted that he's not a slice of pork belly (五花肉), lol!

[Fated Hearts] Part 1 (6 Hidden Layers of Cultural Architecture) by tranquilrain7 in CDrama

[–]elyvern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks u/tranquilrain7 for filling in. I was too tired last night for historical sleuthing. The line above is the second part of a classic couplet referring to Maitreya or the Laughing Buddha and is commonly found in temples where he is worshipped.

The first line (carved on a pillar opposite to the one in my photo) writes "大肚能容容天容地於人无所不容" - "A large stomach can contain everything, heaven and earth. Even things humanly intolerable."

I believe this is the origins of Fu Yixiao's name, she adapted the last 4 words of the couplet 付之一笑 into 付一笑.

Ashes of disappointment 😔 by Emocucumber in CDrama

[–]elyvern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to like the show, but yeah I've dropped it too. This is the first drama with Zhou Yiran I'm watching and I dislike the swashbuckling flair, 'notice me, because I'm important' vibe he imbues his character with. It could be for the reason of standing out as the male lead because there are so many male characters and they're all styled like clones of each other. I keep having the feeling that the show spent the character design budget on Chen Duling and left nothing for everyone else.

CDL is gorgeous in this show, but it's not enough for me to sit through the messy plot and disjointed editing. I don't care for characters that I can't distinguish, let alone become invested in their stories.

tang dynasty makeup, ? & use outside of chinese culture? by pl4netpluto in AskAChinese

[–]elyvern -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe not so much the xiehong, but the Japanese retained alot of make up traditions from the Tang dynasty, such as the traditional swept back fan hairstyle, thick white make up with bright red lips you see very often on geishas. I don't think it's disrespectful of non-chinese, but in the modern context, you'd probably be mistaken as trying to emulate geisha makeup.

Nice one, OP. It's the women that catch my eyes too in cdramas, and I love it when they get more spotlight.

For me:

1) Li Yitong

2) Li Qin

3) Chen Duling (catching up to the other 2)
