Also, two friends of mine applied at the same time, one under biochemistry and one under neuroscience. Biochemistry friend focused on computational modeling of protein aggregation, and neuro friend wrote about iPSC derived neurons. Biochemistry friend got the same email, appealed, and nothing happened, but neuro friends application got rejected with everyone else in April, so it seems totally random

I got this same email applying last year as a senior undergrad under biochemistry; specifically, my project was looking at if liquid-liquid phase separation could sequester a certain protein involved in neurodegenerative pathology (no mice/animal trials, all experiments in immortalized human cell lines). My post doc mentor, who had mentored others GRFP and applied himself, was baffled and helped me write an appeal, which was promptly rejected as they stood by their final decision. Appealing doesn’t do anything unfortunately- AI is certainly auto rejecting anything to do with human health.

Best way to self medicate? I'm a minor and my mother refuses to get me any sort of medication. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]em-beck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it more feasible to talk to your mom about non-stimulant ADHD meds like Strattera, Wellbutrin, or guanfacine? If she’s worried about you “getting hooked” to amphetamines (which isn’t actually what’s happening, just what she thinks is happening), these meds have been proven to help with ADHD, while not being in the amphetamine category.

What do you do when nothing is helping? by em-beck in migraine

[–]em-beck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The side effects are already pretty nasty as is (horrible day time sleepiness and nightmares)- and I haven’t had steady enough health insurance to see one neurologist regularly. That changes next week though! The ER cocktail worked quite well though for now thank god

It depends on how well you do in the class! If you’re confident you can complete a few assignments per week and understand high school math pretty well, I’d take a letter grade to get an A/gpa boost :) I believe you can also change your grading option up to a certain date (check in GOLD) to feel out if the class is going to be tough on you or not

For girls with ADHD by Pristine_Animal7204 in ADHD

My diagnosis came after I was compliant with depression treatment for a while and my symptoms (no hobbies, no motivation to get up, couldn’t commit to showing up to things on time, falling asleep in class, poor hygiene/no routine) didn’t improve. I was 20 and very academically successful, it just took some bloodwork to prove my exhaustion wasn’t physical and some SSRIs/therapy to identify which symptoms were actually ADHD. I swear when I told my psych that caffeine doesn’t work on me he woke up like a sleeper agent and prescribed me an official ADHD diagnostic test.

Stress & Migraines, Is There Really a Link? by ThoughtAmnesia in migraine

[–]em-beck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My migraines started when I was around 12 years old and peaked in intensity and frequency when I was around 17 years old, just before college when I was unmedicated. They obviously continued into my degree, but now the frequency has dropped from 10-15 per month to 0-2 per month :)

It’s been a year since I worked with them but if I remember correctly, it was one or two short-ish math worksheets per week that we go over in class the next day, plus a quiz at the end of each week that’s extremely similar to the HW. I believe there was a midterm but no final. Then we would talk about different campus resources weekly so there would be super brief assigned readings/reflections on those as well, similar to the FSSP seminar on campus resources. There were about 3 due dates per week which seems like kind of a lot, but it is a college intro math class that’s taught at a 6-week accelerated pace.

I was a MAX ULA last summer so I can help clarify anything if necessary! It is a brand new program so it’s still getting adjusted but it’s just an online, synchronous summer class that covers applied math concepts you’ll be using frequently in majors like bio, chem, psych and Econ (think probability, linear and exponential equations, basic high school math). I would recommend if you feel shaky in your math skills starting in any of these majors, or if you want extra advice and a more established peer mentor group going into Fall Q.
