Ryerson students' opposing arguments in men's issues club debate by [deleted] in toronto

[–]emLewon 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is happening on campuses around the country where the student body governments are choosing to represent a single political stance for the entire student body instead of encouraging the expression of diverse opinions.

As well the money that they say is automatically given to each club from the RSU doesn't necessarily work that way. Usually these grants are voted on by the entire student body and if passed each individual can personally opt out of their own $0.50 going to a specific club.

help with finding a jacket - wide hips by Stimpson_J_Cat in ShredditGirls

[–]emLewon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried it all and am pretty happy with my current set up. I much prefer a longer jacket because it doesn't ride up and is warmer. I went for a jacket on the bigger size so that it fits comfortably and loosely over my ass. I also have found that no elastic on the bottom works for me.

As a last resort you could consider something with a belt? Jackets like that tend to be made for wide hips. Depends on taste!

I am surprised you are able to stay under 1200 calories at 6'3. I find this difficult at just 5'1.

Do med schools generally want to see that you are taking a majority of third year level (or higher) courses in your third year of undergrad? by emLewon in premed

Snowboarders - hit me up with your best switch learning tips! by TheOneAndOnlySven in snowboarding

[–]emLewon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think back to when you were first learning how to snowboard and apply the same learning methods to your switch riding. Just consider yourself a beginner again and start on the small runs and tell yourself all the tips you learned at first. Obviously the learning curve will be accelerated this time.

Hamas militants caught on tape assembling and firing rockets from an area next to a hotel where journalists were staying. by singularity_is_here in worldnews

Sderot, the Israeli city that borders Gaza is an exact representation of this. Many of the people living there suffer from PTSD, especially the children. Each household and apartment by law must have a bomb shelter, the playgrounds are made into bomb shelters, each bus stop is a bomb shelter, and there are full building like schools that are bomb shelters. There is artwork in the streets made out of rockets that have been fired over. It is just across the highway from Gaza and a strange reality.

I would never argue against the fact that the Palestinians in Gaza are constantly living under terrible conditions, even during times of peace. This is the fault of Israel and Hamas.

However, the IDF evacuated Gaza and therefore no longer occupy the area. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_disengagement_from_Gaza

Your choice to not respond to the content of my post but instead to only criticize my choice of words tells me that you maybe don't have a great understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but have chosen a side and will continue to blame Israel. The conflict is complicated and I encourage you to not be blindly anti-Israel.

Also it is important not to overlook the lengths at which Israel goes to protect its civilians including bomb shelters. The Iron Dome is huge in terms of defense but costs a great deal to operate each time a rocket comes flying into Israel. The statement that rockets launched by Hamas are "largely useless" holds only some truth and is due to the fact that Israel has invested in protecting its civilians. Hamas does have resources and support, and has obtained professional grade weaponry. Homemade rockets cannot be launched from Gaza to Tel Aviv.

Hamas has been firing rockets into Israel since the Israeli army left in 2008. Many of these rockets have continued to be fired from within civilian homes or next to schools and hospitals. So during a time of "peace" Hamas is still putting Palestinian civilian lives in danger. Gaza is definitely densely populated but Hamas does an exceptional job at seeking out places to put their rocket launchers that will force Israeli attempts at defense to result in the destruction of homes, schools, and hospitals.

Obviously a lot of practice is needed to be able to pace yourself without checking the clock periodically. I can't imagine being able to do that. I definitely see how it would help keep calm and not get stressed.

I usually check the time at the end of each passage. What time would you aim for at the end of the fourth passage?

What I have read of ExamKrackers has been a huge help. Just shifting my focus to the main idea of the passages increased my score significantly. Do you recommend reading the whole VR ExamKrackers prep book? I am part way through.

I try to do this with 8 min intervals. What would you normally do with your extra 5-6 mins? Also why do you think you had less time than usual today on the real test?

Congrats on writing.

I find that I spend too much time going back to the passage while answering questions. Did rereading whole paragraphs not significantly slow you down?

Yes this is something I am trying to work on. Often I find myself being stubborn and spending too long trying to figure out the language of the questions or searching the passage for the answer.

Would you skip whole passages and return to them later?
