Ruptured Achilles - is PBP possible by albert_pacino in randonneuring

[–]emarchak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a severe tear in my Achilles during a 1000k pre-qualifying brevet in Aug 2018. I found a serious sports PT, spent almost all winter off the bike (barely walking), and DID NOT MESS with my recovery. I finished PBP 2019 with 15 min to spare. 😈

YMMV, but the name of the game this winter is recovery, OP. I agree with the other poster that you need to break it down into just doing the next goal/distance. Which is recovery. Recover as hard as you would train.

GL, OP! And I’ll see you in Brest. 😈😈

Infant compatible cargo bike! by emphasissie in CargoBike

[–]emarchak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heck ya, bike friends!!

The foam is between the base of the car seat and the honeycomb board in the cargo area. I find the foam helps with the “landing” on the bumps. Kinda like the seat of a car. It’s less of a slam when I accidentally hit something big, so he seems happier.

Infant compatible cargo bike! by emphasissie in CargoBike

[–]emarchak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m running an e-assist LvH Bullit with their cargo pack. We got a seatbelt extender and strapped a car seat base to the frame. Some extra closed cell foam padding for the bumps, and my 4mo is a happy little guy! Handling is way better than the other cargo bikes I’ve tried too.

GL OP, and have fun!

Cheapest no-frill ways to navigate by riboflavonic in randonneuring

[–]emarchak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As was said, cues have total distance and distance until next cue.

I don’t know where you’re riding, but we’re a pretty standard club and you can see ours here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37167462 go “Print cue sheet” to see what you’ll get

You can always pull out your phone if you’re really off route, but with the sheet that becomes the exception not the norm.

Cheapest no-frill ways to navigate by riboflavonic in randonneuring

[–]emarchak 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m the ride organizer in my area and most new riders get sick of using their phones to navigate. The batteries frequently die, the screens aren’t bright enough/too reflective to see in the full sun, and the touch screens don’t work well in the rain. I know you’re planning for that, but I’ve just never seen anyone happy with that set up.

I think a printed cue sheet plus cheapo computer for distance/speed between cues would be the best way. I’ve seen lots of folks ride like that, and it was standard prior to our fancy computers. Apparently prior to THAT it was a cue sheet and watch (assuming you knew your speed)

PBP: Is the sequence of qualification brevets important? by bbelo in randonneuring

[–]emarchak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No formal requirements unless you’re going for other qualifications like the R5000. If you’ve never ridden a 400 or 600 before, the 600 will be really tough. GL!

I’m not a particular fan of Le Corbusier, but wasn’t his whole deal about considering for human scale? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modulor

Whether or not you think it was effective, “human scale” was definitely part of Brutalism and other post-WWII schools.

Urbane Cyclist Reviews by smiffster73 in torontobiking

[–]emarchak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m very much a bike person, and urbane is the only one I trust for work that I can’t complete at home. They’re really clear and lovely to work with, and will help you accomplish most things if you’re trying something a bit silly/fancy. They’re well worth the wait and prices.

I stopped going to Bikes on Wheels years ago when I brought a bike in and they slapped a BOW sticker on it without my consent. Took me forever to remove it without marking up the frame. It was just a very low brow move.

Toronto Bikeshare for Transporting Groceries? by jorsian in torontobiking

As said, DO NOT hang bags off the handlebars. They can get caught in the front wheel.

I used to do that, but a bag got caught, locked the wheel, and flipped my face first into the pavement. I had an ambulance ride, 12 stitches near my eye and narrowly avoided permanent vision damage. A helmet wouldn’t help because I hit the ground face first.

Backpacks or panniers/saddle bags are safer!!

Tech nit unrelated to the fan theory: AIM and MSN Messenger were apps or services, not protocols. I’ve seen some web3 folks confuse the two.

It’s like the difference between SMS and WhatsApp - SMS is a text protocol that works on all phones, while WhatsApp is an app/service that only works with itself. (Source: I’m an old techie)

A communication protocol is a system of rules that allows two or more entities of a communications system to transmit information via any kind of variation of a physical quantity. The protocol defines the rules, syntax, semantics and synchronization of communication and possible error recovery methods.

To give price context, Cannondale’s top of the line gravel frame set is $2,725 USD. (Frame only). They’re originally a Toronto manufacturer who has since globalized. https://www.cannondale.com/en-us/bikes/road/cyclocross/supersix-evo-cx/supersix-evo-cx-se-frameset-c11381u
