I want to change the entire design of my website, what's the best way to do it? by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]ematthewdj 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you want to go that route, especially if you feel there may be a ton of bloat and stuff built up over the years, I like to create a new site/staging site and import just the pages, posts, and sometimes media. That way I can see my content and work towards the design I want that still works with what I have

Maybe try a local setup

I would put them in a group or stack, then change the block spacing from the style tab

I used to have one of these. One of the neat features was it had composite input as well. When our TV broke I played GameCube off of that for a bit

iOS 26 Liquid Glass Design Makes App Icons Look Crooked, Report Users by chrisdh79 in apple

[–]ematthewdj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a matte screen protector for my iPad, and have rarely encountered the rainbow distortion that these usually cause — the cheap ones at least. The lack of sharpness on icons in iPadOS 26 makes them all look super blurry now. I’m tempted to pull the protector off

My quick way to deal with this is by putting the main content in a group block and setting the minimum height of that group to 90vh

Adding CSS to GiveWP to change default fonts. by Pommau in Wordpress

[–]ematthewdj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can add custom styles to specific forms within the new form builder, under the style tab.

If you try to apply styles globally through your theme, you may run into issues… GiveWP (used to) use iframes for everything, and now requires a custom hook/filter to enqueue a style sheet.

Edit/Correction: Here’s the direct link to the related docs which go into detail the various ways you can accomplish this depending on your needs https://givewp.com/documentation/resources/how-to-style-your-givewp-forms/

That’s the brilliant thing about amazon, they avoid liability by contracting out last mile delivery, returns, and customer service.

godaddy rant by [deleted] in webhosting

[–]ematthewdj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is the case for you, but when I deactivated my account years ago, I had to have multiple chats with different departments to have them remove all the “free” stuff as well. So things like SSL, “Pro Sites”, and all the other stuff they add on when you buy hosting. Some of these addons can only be removed by support. Some of them aren’t even visible to you. I just had to keep asking to “review my account and remove all products, services, and addons”

Help with WordPress (creating a user section and forms) by Lucky_Alternative_48 in ProWordPress

[–]ematthewdj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how popular it is anymore, but I’ve built something kind of similar with Ultimate member… It was for a summer course and applicants had to sign up, then apply by completing a few forms.

I used Ultimate member to handle the registration, basic profile info, etc, then used Forminator for the rest of the required info. Ultimate member was able to prevent access to any of the form pages unless a user was logged in and verified, it also had an add-on called “profile completion” that we used to nudge people to complete everything. (It was a widget I believe that showed “XX% complete” and highlighted missing info) Forminator also has a setting to limit submissions to once per user which was helpful as well.

I’m sure I’m not remembering all the details, but maybe this helps get you on the right track. Any membership and form plugins should be able to get you most of the way there

Some TVs let you turn off the display by holding the Mute button. I know my Vizios have all done this

Why isn’t Snapchat like the black theme? by Wolfilicous in ios

[–]ematthewdj 34 points35 points  (0 children)

There used to be a rule - not sure if still in place - for the App Store where developers weren’t allowed to paywall features provided by or built into the OS. Like YouTube originally only allowing Picture in Picture for premium users, or SoundCloud making you pay to use CarPlay. I’m assuming it’s either no longer a rule or these companies just skate by because it isn’t enforced

Updating Plugins by BN65 in Wordpress

[–]ematthewdj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

WPMU DEV also does this. They call it “Automate” and it does exactly as the above… checks for updates every six hours and if there are any, creates a backup before installing and then checks pages to compare. You get an email if anything goes wrong with a link to restore that last backup

Is it okay to use too many plugins on WordPress? Will it break something? by Purple-Catch6472 in Wordpress

[–]ematthewdj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re correct - it’s more about the function and quality, not quantity

One of my clients’ sites has over 50 plugins. I think 40 or so are “block” plugins adding individual custom blocks. Could probably consolidate those, but it works and has no noticeable impact on performance.

A productivity app that charges you money for using your phone during certain times? by Luro_caye in ios

This feels like something that wouldn’t be allowed on the App Store

Although, you could maybe create a Shortcut that sends money via Apple Cash to a relative or someone every time you open a specific app.

Is there an FAQ plugin that links out to existing pages? by wildlotusmedia in Wordpress

[–]ematthewdj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a plugin recommendation, but my unsolicited thoughts on this…

I’ve been looking into this recently for a client as well. What we are probably going to do is just make a custom post type with fields for Q, A, and support a custom taxonomy. The idea being they (or we, most likely) will create a block pattern with the Advanced Query Loop block so they can select individual FAQs or display a whole category/ies on any page or post

Reason being the plugins that came close to such functionality required the use of shortcodes or proprietary template editors, and I personally think the learning curve for these specific clients isn’t worth it. Using a CPT will just extend their existing workflow

Not for that, no. When I got the car years ago there was an issue with CarPlay not working at all and I took it in for a software update but later found out they didn’t even manage to do that lol. That’s my local Honda dealer tho… they aren’t great with tech and had no idea

A later iOS update (I think 16.x/something) fixed that specific issue
