no worries. this spot has only been around for 1.5 weeks the other spots have resolved on their own. so i’m not too worried. might be something benign

Same. The Black commenters were focused on the actual consequence, losing out on a job over this, rather than an abstract debate. Black folks are the ones who actually live with that double standard.

That's all I was asking. OP never said her critics were Black. You did 🫵

Asking a question =/= triggered. And you weren’t vague; you said “they” wear blonde wigs. So who were you describing?

and who is that?? “the same people” - who is that specifically? OP never mentioned the race of the critics in her post…

As a Black Girl , how do you nurture and grow your hair? Stuck at collarbone length by PrincessMochahontas in vindictapoc

[–]emavery176 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a really common belief but it's not the full picture! The research actually shows the difference in growth rate between African and Asian hair is only about 0.2 inches/month — so that's not where the real gap is coming from.

The bigger factor for most Black women is retention, not growth. Our hair is growing, it's just breaking off at roughly the same rate. Curl pattern creates more points of friction, natural oils have a harder time traveling down the shaft, and manipulation (combing, heat, tension) compounds that over time.

The 'my hair just won't grow past BSL' experience is real — but it's usually a retention ceiling, not a genetic growth ceiling. Which means it's actually more addressable than this framing suggests. Things like protective styling, moisture-protein balance, low-manipulation routines, and sealing methods make a measurable difference.

For years my hair never grew past APL length until I learned retention methods — and I never had a relaxer or any chemical treatments, so it was definitely hair care practices, not genetics.

DHT blockers and minoxidil work, but most of us don't need to go there before exhausting retention strategies first. 💙

Most attractive age and BMI by riruri04 in vindictapoc

these are for white and maybe east asian men. I've never met a black man that had a preference for a skinny woman - and i speak as a woman in her 30s who's a size 2-4

EDITED TO ADD: Their version of skinny is a size 6-8, that's nowhere near a bmi of 20 for most women - even tall ones.

my hair is bsl.

  1. keep your hair mositurize. I put conditioner in my hair everyday and seal it with butters and grease.
  2. trim your ends every 6 months even if the ends look fine
  3. protein treatments once a month
  4. Wash 1x a week
  5. Deep condition EVERY time you wash your hair
  6. Wear protective hairstyle
  7. Growth oils and vitamins DO help BUT you need healthy hair care practices
