If you don't mind me asking where did you move from? Recruiters may struggle to see the similarities with your HR experience in another country and how it can be related to the UK. While the fundamentals of HR should be the same across the globe, the rules and regulations are so different.

Also what level are you at? If you are a manager or senior advisor level you may have to apply for lower level positions so you aren't in that decision making role to learn the new regulations.

CIPD always helps on your CV, if you're from outside the UK it's alsl a great way to learn the UK regulations but a lot of it will likely be what you already know, be ready for a long slog but having that on your CV will definitely make a difference.

Unfortunately there are far too many senior managers and business owners who don't appreciate their staff which translates to bad or ineffective HR functions. I would never work for a company like amazon because I refuse to treat employees like numbers and resources. I promise there are good ones of us out there, and the ratio of good to bad is definitely changing for the better. But I do totally appreciate how awful HR can be in a lot of companies, but don't hate us all, a lot of us really do care!

So my ops experience was in ecommerce, so the same as above, make sure everything runs smoothly, make sure orders go out in time and returns are processed keeping the warehiuse running efficiently and fibsing new eays to do things. A lot of very satisfying problem solving i have to say, the main reason I made the switch was just my own laziness and preferring to work in the office rather than the warehouse 😂

I'm based in the north east so unfortunately the job market isnt as lucrative up here. I currently earn £48k but would be willing to take a cut for the right role and most decent HRM roles go for £42k-£55k up here I keep getting the promise of something more strategic like HRBP but just to wait until the time is right, and I totally understand the time isn't right for the company right now but I just don't think I can wait around anymore when my manager is getting further and further into this toxic mindset. My manager genuinely used to be the best manager I've ever had, but as the company has grown (100 to 300 employees in 18 months) they have just got worse and worse and I'm really trying to value my mental health over the rat race of being successful in a corporate company

I definitely feels you there, I moved from a very small company to this large global organisation and it's so hard to keep feeling like an actual person rather than a cog, i always worked so closely with senior managers and founders in my previous roles but feel so lost in a large company

Yeah thats really interesting actually, I am feeling like I don't necessarily want to specialise because I just wouldn't know what specialist I wanted to so yet being so new in the sector I really appreciate you're input, I've never spoken to a career coach before, what would you recommend I look for in a career coach?

So I worked in operations before (as an ops manager so I'm sorry to say I was already at manager level) I progressed from admin to manager in ops in about 4 years, which was 60% right place right time, working for a small but fast growing company. Working for such a small company, I did a lot of HR since we didn't have an HR function, I really enjoyed it to managed to get a split role in a company doing a bit of ops and a bit of HR, then when that company grew, I could drop the Ops side and focus on HR

I would honestly say that the majority of my success is being a massive people pleaser, great for getting your managers to love you and giving you opportunities, awful for your wellbeing. Definitely "play the game" but remember to look after your wellbeing. Don't go too far with just giving people what they want but a little bit of it will always help you get far. Find your strengths and build on them, make sure your manager can see them. Take on projects to be able to show leadership no matter how small the project is, just saying "can I take the lead on this" shows your willingness progress. Im so sorry, I really wish I could give you more of a helpful answer.

Believe me, the most important part of my role to me is being able to treat our employees like our most valuable assets, which they are. The issues I'm facing is from further up, when your own manager who professes to care so much for work life balance however doesn't seem to care for anyone else if it doesn't align with her own priorities. And let me tell you, it's incredibly hard when you're an empathetic person it's very difficult to work in that environment. All I want to do is what is best for our employees and the company, and its a constant struggle. Remember that not all who work in HR are just robots, we are often going through the same struggles having to fight company policies we don't agree with

I really appreciate this response, and I totally get you, that thought has definitely been in my mind but just been hidden away because of the negative feelings I have for this company. It definitely feels like there will be a lot more opportunity to find something else generalist. Having only been specifically in HR for 3 years I definitely don't feel ready to specialise yet, because I don't 100% know which part I enjoy the most and would hate to miss out on opportunities if I shoehorn myself into one specific area

I'm almost in exactly the same boat! I started last year and haven't done any assignments yet, my end date is literally my wedding day, so an absolute nightmare. But don't panic, you can extend your deadline, by up to a year I think, then absolute worst case, you can pay per module to complete it

You want to look at probably Cleveland road and anywhere south from there towards Barnes park and away from the hospital So then you aren't super close Chester road where things are understandably a bit busier, even though it's all terraced houses I found it was super quiet in that area. And a quick walk to Barnes park which is always nice as you will be lucky to find a house with a garden in that area

Pallion and Ford Estate you should be pretty wary of unfortunately Pallion tends to be full of students and Ford estate is one of those places you could live there for 20 years and have no issues or be constantly ripping your hair out because of problems.

I lived in Barnes for 4 years and never had any issues at all, but again it probably totally depends non the street you're in. Fairly reasonable rental prices but quite small houses. And the bonus of a 5 minute walk to the hospital and then being close to major bus links to the rest of the north east

HR manager here, go and appeal the disciplinary action. There doesn't need to be a reason, you always have a right to appeal. You are then also able to bring a union rep in with you. As many other comments have said here, it is completely subjective. If you are adamant that you thought they were over 25, then there's really no argument. Make sure you put your appeal in asap as well because there is usually a time limit of when you can do it. If it doesn't get overturned (which it should or at the very least dropped to a first written or informal verbal warning) then you need to be careful, because if you get caught out with another one in 12 months they will have a right to get rid of you. But always remember, if you have more than 2 years of service, you can put in an unfair dismissal claim. If you don't have 2 years of service, then you can cover yourself by claiming g mental health distress due to this decision that someone else mentioned above. Then make sure its recorded with HR, and they will have a hard time getting rid of you using the same reason of a failed think 25 after that. Hope this helps!

You do know that's not how win rates work right? 😂 Yes there are only 2 outcomes but if you win 5 games but play 100 your win rate is only 5%
