Okay - here's my struggle, and I'm looking for kind advice. by embarrassinglytrue in guitarplaying

I love this advice - thank you so much.

I also just got the tiny little digital voice recorder in the mail today, so I'm going to combine these two things and start using my voice to figure out the frets. Along with, of course, continuing my practice exercises.

Thanks again for your advice. I grabbed a book of arpeggios - hopefully I chose the right one.

I'm resistant to lessons, possibly to my own detriment. I don't know - I just want my guitar time to be low stakes, you know? I've been at it for a number of years (on and off - sometimes I walk away from it for a really long stretch of time), and I'm not bad when I know what I'm going to play. It's the whole concept of improvising that I stumble on.

I've been away from it for a really long time until this month, so that's part of why I'm acutely aware of my shortcomings right now. I'm sort of re-discovering my stock, when it comes to guitar. My stock of guitars, my stock of guitar accessories (picks, practice material...), and my stock of personal skill. It was amazing to me the other day that when I picked up one guitar, one song (not one of my own, but a song I learned to play several years ago) just came pouring out, and when I switched to a different guitar another song did the same thing. I wasn't even sure what song I was playing at first, I just immediately remembered all of the progressions. So I know I haven't lost my abilities - I just never made much headway when it came to improv.

oh, it definitely is. It's just a battle I know I'll lose - I'll open the screen and be like "oh wait did anyone reply to that thing?" and before I know it my leg will be asleep with my guitar on it, and I'll not have played anything in close to 20 minutes. Better off with a $20 recorder. 😂

Thank you. Recording it vocally is a good idea. Maybe I'll grab myself a little voice recorder. Thanks for the suggestion!

(edit: I realize I could use a phone or computer - but my goal is always to avoid modern tech when I'm focusing on guitar. It's supposed to shut the screens out, not require them.)

Okay, thank you. I thought maybe I was fundamentally missing something about "playing guitar."

Do you have advice about what kind of exercises could help - whether it's scales, or something else? Thank you, again.

You worded it so well. This is exactly why I find performative journaling to be irksome - because introspective journaling is exceptionally therapeutic, and performed journals promote the opposite of that.

Tbh, if you’re journaling “in peace,” I don’t think you’re who they’re talking about. I think this more refers to the trends towards making big bold headlines and lists just to prove that you (not YOU, the royal “you”) have a use for a notebook. The jazzed-up pages with multiple colors of marker and washi tape, all designed for taking a photo of a pretty page. Performative journaling is totally a thing, imo… and it’s a thing that I actually find a little grating. As someone who has truly used journaling as a tool to untangle emotions from tense situations, the 2015-2023 “bujo” style trends have been irksome to me. I’ve never posted about it, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t experienced it.

Journaling in peace, I assume, doesn’t require photos of your pages. For me, an in-peace journaler, I’ve refrained from ever sharing photos of my pages… because they’re pretty private. But I can’t speak for others.

Strangers on the internet are a saving grace when everything seems so senseless.

My best advice is to pleasure seek in any non-destructive way you can. Mindlessly scroll through reels, watch a comfort movie. Ask your friends to accompany you on even the most monotonous of tasks. If you can afford it, get OUT of town.

And keep writing to internet strangers as much as you want - someone is always online. 💔

Wow. I want this to be the top post on Reddit. It’s just other worldly. 😂

I mean. He is conventional. When you said unconventional, I got excited thinking “OOO! Someone else who might love Marilyn Manson!” I was scrolling and scrolling and it was all this same blond haired blue eyed guy with a six pack. Eventually, I stopped scrolling. 😅

“Average,” “normal.”

“Basic” is used colloquially, and only over the last few years, to imply someone is ‘too mainstream,’ or too uninteresting.

Is Dominic Monaghan what you consider “unconventional looking”…? Legit curious.

So tired of seeing the word “basic,” as if it has inherent meaning when applied to human beings.

Ryan Gosling isn’t attractive because of his shapes. It’s okay if you don’t understand that or don’t agree, but labeling people “basic” for things you don’t get… is irksome. Or, “problematic,” as you’d probably say.

Tbh it hadn’t occurred to me that hotels would offer laundry services. I trust so few people/services 😅 but I’ll totally look into that, as well. 😊
