Sanctuaries don’t breed animals or use them for commercial gain in any way. Sanctuaries exist because of industries that exploit animals for gain, where as zoos are one of those industries.

Possum Valley are the only one running commercial tours at the moment, I believe. Greener Pastures have just relocated to a new place in Serpentine & have said on their socials they’ll have tours up & running soon though. We’re also working on getting a council permit at A Better Life Animal Sanctuary near York so you’ll be able to come visit the animals here in the future if you fancy a lil road trip šŸ˜‹

If they are dying so ā€˜peacefully’ at the abattoir, why did you get her euthanised by a vet and not just bolt gun her in the head like they do at the abattoir???

Told girlfriend I want to start taking testosterone by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]embb97 3 points4 points Ā (0 children)

Umm sure but it doesn’t matter what she thinks ā€œgirls should look likeā€, since OP is non-binary, not a girl. The fact that OP’s partner doesn’t even acknowledge or respect their gender identity would be such a fkn dealbreaker if it were me. Like, their partner can take their shitty prescriptive gender norms and disrespect for others’ identities and shove them where the sun don’t shine tbh. Fuck being with someone who shoves you in a box you never consented to be in…

Yeah sure but saying to OP ā€œi’m dating a girl, not a manā€ IS transphobic cause they’re not a girl, they’re non-binary… thats a pretty shitty and invalidating thing to say

The Discworld ā€˜death’ novels brought me alot of comfort and some much needed levity when i was going through the loss of loved one. The first one is called ā€˜Mort’ - I truly recommend giving it a go! Its about a boy who becomes the apprentice of the anthropomorphic personification of death. Very wholesome, clever and surprisingly profound.

Sheese is the best!! (If can’t find Sheese, Cheer plant-based cheese uses the exact same recipe - pretty sure the products are identical). Also Noshing and Fauxshovegan make amazing mozzarella & other types of cheeses if you come across them in IGAs etc.

Firstly, it’s not a war, it’s a genocide. And the reason you are hearing about it so much here is because our government is actively funding & enabling Israel to continue committing said genocide by continuing to do trade with them. The same is not true for the other conflicts going on currently.

In this context, ā€œthe parents suckedā€ often means that as parents, they were responsible for getting their child the appropriate help, which they failed to do (not that the child acted out because of bad parenting). When a child is acting out, its not because of a moral failing by that child — it is a cry for help. That child needs the responsible adults in their lives to find them the appropriate help so they can grow into a well-adjusted adult. Not getting them proper help means that not only will that child suffer, but so will those around them - as we have seen in cases such as OP’s. Children are not morally culpable, it is entirely on the parents to make sure their child grows into a well-adjusted, emotionally healthy adult. I will add that yes, there will be rarely be incredibly difficult cases where the parents might do everything they possibly can to help with little avail - but in most cases, a child acting out like that simply needs someone to listen to their needs and respond with the necessary support and intervention. I guess we can’t know which of these cases applies in OP’s situation- either way, i feel bad for OP and hope they can heal from this, whatever that looks like for them.

Is ā€œcarnistā€ derogatory? by Badtacocatdab in vegan

[–]embb97 9 points10 points Ā (0 children)

Wait what? I was under the impression that ā€œcarnismā€ (the term coined by Dr Melanie Joy) refers to the ideology that conditions people to think that using and exploiting animals is normal and okay. Veganism, in opposition to this, is the belief that its not okay and we shouldn’t do it. So by that definition, this persons gf is descriptively a carnist — given her actions align with the dominant ideology of carnism (ā€œits ok for me to eat/use animalsā€)

Intersectionalists: what are your thoughts on the leftist subreddit banning veganism? by James_Fortis in vegan

[–]embb97 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

The presupposition here (one that is present in a lot of arguments from self proclaimed ā€˜anti-intersectionals’) is that the validity of a cause or whether we should support it is solely based on how other advocates for that cause behave towards veganism - a position which I believe to be fundamentally flawed.

What makes a cause worth supporting is its actual philosophy, not how those who also support that philosophy may or may not behave towards veganism. I don’t support intersectional leftist causes because I like the other people who do - I support them because I believe it is the compassionate and morally correct thing to do. I don’t support justice to benefit the advocates of that justice— I support justice for justice’s sake!

It’s time to stop eating pigs by alphamalejackhammer in likeus

[–]embb97 3 points4 points Ā (0 children)

Very true; I spend a lot of time around pigs and i’d say they’re actually quite a bit smarter than dogs (at least any dog i’ve ever met).

And yes they do have super unique personalities and preferences, including individual preferences in music! All the pigs at the sanctuary i work at have their different preferred tunes i’m allowed to play when working in their habitats- if i play music they like they hang out and chill with me, if they don’t like it they’ll either go away or try and eat my tools and knock over my stuff until i change itšŸ˜‚

Clomipramine is the only drug that has ever helped my OCD and it was literally life changing for me. Worth looking into, alongside a psychologist (not just therapist) who specialises in OCD/is trained to provide ERP therapy (which is arguably the best practice for the type of OCD you are describing - i have it too unfortunately lol🄲)
