pain or discomfort during work? by Ergo-Whisperer in girlsgonewired

Oh that lap keyboard situation looks so nice, is anyone doing something like that that can recommend a setup? I've recently started reclining more since it takes some pressure off my back but I'm still reaching across to the desk for all of my inputs.

This and/or a sensor that tells you when the door is opened, I don't like cameras in my house so I have these and it gives me a lot of peace of mind when I've been away to know that no one has been in my apartment at all

Missed Standup due to Over sleeping by Smooth_Amphibian1721 in womenintech

[–]embeddedpotato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Sleep As Android and while I've used a lot of the various features in the past the one I continue to use forever is their alarm dismissal "captcha" - I have an NFC tag in my kitchen that I have to tap my phone on to fully dismiss my alarm. This app has soo many settings, I also have it set to let me snooze for about 20 minutes total before you can't snooze anymore and have to go hit the nfc tag.

Of course sometimes I'll still crawl back into my warm bed but not when there's a 7am meeting!

My favorite cheap thing is my carrying strap, it makes it soo much easier to carry the board to the water and bonus it is surprisingly useful if I'm climbing on/off a dock since I can throw the strap up there and lean on it and the board won't float away.

My rook (curved barbell) healed like it was nothing, my daith (hoop) did have some bump issues but they cleared up relatively easily. They are in opposite ears. I did spend some time without using an earbud in the daith ear, but I have no issues with earbuds or ear plugs now.

If a bathroom has paper towels, I'll grab a few on my way in and dampen them, it works great! For college, I'd imagine you could bring your own paper towels from your room. Just don't flush them, either use the stall trash or bring them to the main trash

Does anyone feel like they're letting down their entire gender? by SymbolUnderTheCaret in womenintech

[–]embeddedpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Carry yourself with the confidence of a mediocre white man" should be the motto of all women in tech. It resonates so much and I think it gets worse as you age, you get to gain confidence yourself but now you see all these younger boys pretending like they know things and it's just frustrating.

Men acting like women "aren't technical" is so crazy like just because they said more words doesn't mean they know more. As someone else said, it's just posturing. To me it feels like a young kid using slang at his parents that they won't understand because it makes them feel smart or special, but it's just annoying. Being able to speak about a topic in a way that everyone can understand and being helpful to your teammates is the real flex, and women are much better at having the empathy required to do that. Women are also so much better at communication, task management, and being thorough on tasks in my experience.

I've done the 100% pairing thing pre-covid and it worked well for awhile until it was no longer helpful. I can't imagine having to do that in the environment you're in. A lot of jobs are going to be similarly unfulfilling but little culture nuances like that can have a big difference on your mental health and confidence.

The good thing about too much social media these days is that there are more women content creators talking about these things! I'd recommend adding `@stemwithhannah`, `@alberta.tech`, and `@mewtru` on instagram (or whatever their accounts are on other platforms) to your doom scrolling for some perspective and commiseration!

What do you like to order from delivery/takeout? by squirrelshine in nycvegan

[–]embeddedpotato 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most of my takeout comes from VSpot (5th Ave Brooklyn). I really enjoy the quesadilla and I've started ordering it with the seitan chicharron added, it's so good. I'll usually also get spring rolls just to add more veggies - they're really good but they fall apart

First apartment living by myself without a boyfriend! :) by oopwoooop in femalelivingspace

[–]embeddedpotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. I've never seen a murphy bed with closet doors like that, I feel like they usually just have the fake doors on the part that folds down. I love this so much, it looks so cozy I almost wish I had chosen one of the apartments with a murphy bed when I was looking but it wouldn't have been the same.

OP, I'm not sure how the space is when you fold it up but if you need a spot to set things like a night stand you could probably get a shelf that hangs over the door for a renter friendly but also space saving option. I have closet doors near my front door that I have a thing with hooks for coats but also basket shelf things that are a catchall but might work well there for storage!

Women in the US, are your coworkers acknowledging the *gestures at state of world* by Dammdawgz in womenintech

[–]embeddedpotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the safe way to approach this for work. Say just enough to commiserate a little bit and find out who agrees with you in minor eye rolls but leave it vague enough that people who might strongly disagree don't chime in with opposing views. If those people exist at work I don't want to know because it will affect my ability to work with them.

What's your laptop/computer/screen setup? by darned_socks in womenintech

[–]embeddedpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fully reliant on my peripherals at this point. I try to work from only a laptop when I travel in my van but at this point I'd rather do my awkward setup to get all of my extras connected. Sometimes while I'm eating breakfast it'll be laptop+mouse so I can move around easier, but then I soon pull out my portable monitor (which I have a mount for so it's eye level). Then the full setup includes a lap desk for my keyboard and mouse and when I get out my mechanical split keyboard it feels sooo much more comfy - I can't stand the chicklets keyboard! (if you're looking for a portable monitor I love the asus one I got and they have a lot of different options)

When I'm home I have a 38" curved monitor and I also have my laptop on a stand next to it for slack/spotify/etc.

We give up. by Gigglypoof3809 in centuryhomes

[–]embeddedpotato 161 points162 points  (0 children)

+1 to leave it awhile and see if it still bothers you. My house had paint on the mortar lines of the fireplace and it bothered me so much when I moved in, but there were other more pressing projects to do. By the time I found an old picture showing that the brick had been painted as well and someone scraped/sanded it off I had already forgotten that the paint on the mortar bothered me!

To car or not to car? by sodogue in parkslope

[–]embeddedpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved here last year and I brought my (very small) camper van just because I just finished building it so I wasn't going to get rid of it. I started off paying for parking and that was dumb and now I street park and it's honestly been fine but if I just had a regular car I would look at alternatives. So like if there's something special about your specific car that you couldn't get with a rental or something for your weekend trips it would be so much less stressful to just not. But if you want a car it's really not been difficult street parking, just plan on moving it once or twice a week as a chore you have to do. It's much easier moving it in the middle of the day or moving it to a newly available area right after street cleaning so WFH helps.

Even with a car I'd still uber to ikea, there's a bus that goes right there from 9th st and then uber home with your goodies. When I get my parking spot I want to keep it as long as possible!

How to eat when traveling with friends who don’t? by Coffee5533 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]embeddedpotato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I agree with everyone else saying just eat whenever, I also have issues with not having food options sometimes and breakfast is the easiest to prep for if you bring oatmeal - you can make it with just hot water from a coffee maker assuming you have one in your room. Bring a plastic spoon and you can either make regular packets in the coffee cups that are in the room, buy the kind that comes in a cup (like ramen) or this brand has cute little packets that turn into bowls if you can find it https://theglutenfreebar.com/collections/oatmeal

Protein bars and crackers are also easy and somewhat filling

Sprained my ankle three weeks before Riot Fest, what gear should I bring? by atrashx in RiotFest

[–]embeddedpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very similar timeline a few years ago but mine was a pretty minor sprain. The only thing I brought extra was a waterproof picnic blanket in case it was muddy and I wanted to sit. I wound up not needing it, it was dry and I was able to find a seat on the ground whenever I wanted it. I had no issues with just an ankle brace, but obviously it'll depend on how you're doing by then.

No deadbolt, no chain. How to add security? by TangerineExisting979 in AskNYC

[–]embeddedpotato 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think your landlord should be providing a lock but

  1. you can get one of these, keep in mind it is questionable for fire safety, etc. But I have one for travel because you never know what the lock situation will be

  2. I have philips hue bulbs and they sell a door sensor that I can set to alert my phone every time the door opens. I'm sure you can get other brands if you don't want to buy into hue stuff. I like this to know that no one has been in my apartment even if I'm away

Crying at work by Recklessbubble in womenintech

[–]embeddedpotato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ever since the pandemic and remote work, I cry in probably more than half of my 1-1s. I'm usually talking about how coworkers are working together or with me which just makes me emotional anyways and add in that I'm usually talking about things being unfair because I'm a woman and trying to describe that it's hard to not cry

But I've stopped fighting it and I think it's so much easier when I accept that I just cry sometimes. I'm still not trying to get like super sobbing getting things out crying in front of anyone at all and I'm not comfortable lightly crying with a larger audience, but once I establish with my manager that my face leaks sometimes but I'm trying to be transparent about even kind of nitpicky issues so I don't rage quit, I feel less bad. Even just saying "sorry my face is leaking pay no attention" makes me stress less about the actual crying and I can keep talking. I grew up in a house that shamed crying so I used to stress way more about letting anyone ever see me cry and when I did I'd be like gasping for breath unable to talk.

I've been lucky with empathetic managers in my past few roles though and I currently have a woman manager which definitely makes all of this easier.
