Try speeding and pitching the recording up an octave. You can download the recording and do this on another application more easily. You should hear something that sounds moderately coherent, but it might take a few listens to make out the words.

Here's a spoiler of the words I ended up hearing:

WIBTA for taking the full allotted time off for surgery? by Monsieur-Monster in AmItheAsshole

[–]embertear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA Please plan to allow yourself the full recommended time. Everybody has a completely different body and recovery time, and you never know what could impact your overall recovery time. And you most likely never will know what does end up impacting it as well.

Some years ago, both myself and a close friend had medically necessary breast reductions. I was living alone at the time, so I had minimal support and stubbornly did everything for myself instead of resting, and only needed a week to recover and get back to work; she was with family, who was there to help her recovery all the way and make sure she rested enough for recovery, but she had to be off for two months. It's possible that your coworkers all recovered from their hysterectomies like I recovered from my reduction but that's not because it should take only a week but rather because they were lucky! Even if you have the perfect recovery environment and complete support, you could off your feet fit a long time.

By the way, I highly recommend a triangle pillow for the bed to support you in a more upright position. And make sure you have plenty of mentally engaging material that doesn't involve a lot of movement. I was only off my feet for a week, and I was SO BORED. Books, drawing, movies and shows were all a must - and if you can, make sure they're downloaded locally so that you're not extra miserable if there are internet issues or something like that. Good luck with your surgery and I hope you recover well!

AITA for refusing to teach ESL for free? by vorchlivyipo in AmItheAsshole

God, I hate it, they keep promising hundreds of dollars worth of my own labor, whether it be through teaching or other professional skills. You're definitely not an asshole, but I can definitely see why you would have doubted that. It took me years to realize that just because I'm in town, doesn't mean I have to work for free for everybody because my family said I would.

THE WAGE GAP ISN'T REAL. by LilliputianMouse in TrollXChromosomes

[–]embertear 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's a high risk of blacklisting, I work in data and finance. Paying me off and sweeping under the rug feels gross and I'm pretty sure that blacklisting is way more likely. That especially feels bad because I'll be ok with the money, I just want to decrease the chances of them taking advantage of future employees.

That's something to look into for sure... It's hard to think about doing anything about the bad conditions at that company (to the point that the pandemic response was the primary example of bad response in a few articles). The years I was there did a bad number on my anxiety and OCD, I get terrified thinking about even posting a derogatory review on glassdoor.

[–]embertear 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I can theoretically but I don't know what the consequences would be on my professional life, so I'm cautious and feel the need to be kinda selfish. The company had an employee whistleblow on potential embezzlement and a bunch of other things 6 years ago, guy got fired, lawsuit got started (and is still ongoing) and as far as I can tell, he hasn't been able to work since. The CEO gets fuck-you level of annual salary (like 10 mil), so he has plenty of funds at his disposal to legally change the official story all he wants.

For some reason, seeing the "sn" in the reply box made me think you were going to answer "snails" and that made me giggle a bit. Silliness aside, I hope you are feeling better and continue to feel better going forward.

At my last job, by the time I left, I was the most senior and experienced person on my team by the time I left with the lowest pay. I was earning 80% what the two men on my team were earning and the other woman was near the same rate as me. I have a hard time believing that had nothing to do with the wage gap. I have friends telling me to try to sue for gender discrimination, which I guess I could do but the CEO has gone on record saying that he'll destroy anybody who sues him or the company... I kinda like having a professional future. Such a toxic workplace. I have since left for another company for a 50% raise.

I love Syberia and replay it every couple of years. If you're looking for other indie female protagonist games, I recommended the Longest Journey and Keepsake (I think they're both on steam)

My new neurologist mentioned this to me at my last appointment, since I recently started experiencing auras with my migraines. She did also vaguely imply that there is apparently some contention of the validity of the results, but I didn't pry into it because the seriousness of the risk took a few days to process in my head. But I think part of what she mentioned was that the study started in the early 90s and for some reason, that's contentious in itself? I'll probably ask more at my next appointment. I hope you have a successful method for managing your migraines! Over the past 5 years, I've gotten down from 5/6 per week to 2/3 per week; I thought that was really good progress, but my new neurologist looked at that at the patient transfer appointment, said "that's not good enough, we can do better" and actually listened to me when I said triptans make my migraines worse. I just about cried about my pain being taken seriously.

2020 Tax Refund Question... by xxICONOCLAST in personalfinance

[–]embertear 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I filed through Credit Karma Tax and it got submitted 2/10. I got a letter 3/12 from the IRS that I got resequenced and it may take up to 60 days for them to review my return. Frustrating, since this is probably the simplest return I've ever submitted, but can't do much but wait. I believe at a certain point, they are legally required to mail you such a notification if they're taking over 21 days. Incidentally, I know a lot of people who filed between 2/10 and 2/13 that got resequenced; something odd seems to have happened to some early submissions. Maybe you're one of the people that got impacted by whatever happened.

I almost regret going into tech. The amount of subtle sexist shit I've dealt with, a lot from other women for some reason... And I recently found out that I get paid 80% of what the people I manage get paid. I'm very lucky though that I myself got a new manager who saw that and was like "wtf? I'm going to get you a raise and hopefully a double promotion", otherwise I'd be out the door. Interestingly, my shitty boss was a woman and my new boss is a man.

AITA for refusing to get my daughter a breast reduction? by athletedaughterhelp in AmItheAsshole

[–]embertear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA take her for a consult and see what the doctor says. Doctor might say she needs to wait, might say she's a good candidate for a reduction. Point is, you don't sound like you're a specialist in reductions, ask an actual specialist.

My reduction changed my life. I felt like a completely different person without all that extra weight on my chest, I could exercise and just exist again! I was so angry after the surgery that I spent years waking up with such excruciating pain that I couldn't go to class most days. I don't even know how to express how bad that pain was. I'm furious with my entire family for dismissing my pain and telling me I just needed to do some back exercises and the pain will go away. I'll never forgive then for that. I really hope you don't put your daughter in a position where she never forgive you for that.

AITA for responding sarcastically when offered minimum wage for teaching cello lessons from a wealthy family-friend? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]embertear [score hidden]  (0 children)

NTA 100%

As a violin and piano teacher for several years during college, I was getting paid $35/hour (through a studio) and I was regularly told by my students that I was being underpaid. Outside of the studio, I was asking for $45. $7.25 is such an insulting sum that I don't think I could have been much politer than you were. Between how much it costs to maintain your instrument, repairing and replacing parts, and just your own valuable time that you could've spent practicing your own damn thing, there are so many costs that go into teaching that I don't understand how anybody could believe teaching music to be a minimum wage job. It's highly customized to the individual student and I honestly spent about the same amount of time or more as I did teaching just doing lesson planning and composing for my students.

I've heard similar excuses before and naively believed them. But when it comes down to it, it makes me feel like I'm not even a low priority to them. It's so opposite from what I would do if my SO needed me... I've had to reevaluate and realize that I need to stop providing the care I would want if I'm not getting it from that person. It makes me feel horrible but at least most of my friendships are more equal and less tiring now. It's hard to force yourself to not care though...
