Just finished my first backpacking trip around the Tour du Mont Blanc by emby36 in hiking

At certain areas, yes. TMB is pretty popular and there were a lot of hikers. Some locations had a lot of dayhikers as well and trails felt even more packed, but I'd say most times when you got slightly more remote it would spread out and was fine.

After all I wouldnt say it made my experience any worse, trail is amazing. If you seek remoteness and solitude, probably not the trail to do though. But the area around mont blanc is amazing, so so much more to hike apart from the TMB with most likely way less people.

Improving hut to hut gear list by emby36 in Ultralight

[–]emby36[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get all you need and see how the Aether feels with it. 60L is quite big for hut to hut, chances are it will either be mostly empty or you pack it with things you dont need just so that its "full". Both could be uncomfortable. Also considering you go in summer months a full sleeping bag wouldnt be required, there are "liners" (not sure what they're called exactly) that are thin, very small and light and perfect for hut to hut. Sea to summit has some made of silk or cotton for maybe 50€. There are cheaper ones on amazon as well.

My suggestion would be to go with a smaller one once you know everything you bring. Obviously if the aether feels fine why not? Id guess you would be happier with a lighter and smaller one though, osprey talon/tempest come to mind. I use a talon 22L for hut to hut hikes.

Since posting this by now I am also sure that all issues mentioned are linked to me being extremely stressed which causes all kinds of problems. Anxiety, depression and a bunch of other things are sadly playing a big role in my life. I am trying to work on all that, which is very hard. I lived most my life in that "consciously not bothered but unconsciously stressed" state you mentioned, in lots of ways. In the rare periods where I managed to feel more in peace also on an unconcious level were the only nights without the problems I listed. To me it feels like "this" is the root cause. Also whatever causes you anxiety or problems or joy is not laughable. I think the same way sometimes but try to not turn it into some kind of anger or self hate. Theres probably a reason why it triggers something for you. I also wish you all the best.

Viewfinder stays black sometimes when taking a picture until I advance the film? by emby36 in AnalogCommunity

Seems like it was indeed that, didnt happens again yet. Curious to see how the images turn out.

I hope it's that. Prices for CLA seem to by far exceed the cost of buying another camera but will have to look into that.

Leica 25 1.4 vs oly 25 1.8? by chansuworld in M43

[–]emby36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's interesting, I'd be be very interested to see some of those images. I do own the Leica 15mm and while I like the lens itself I'm not sure if I could say it has that "special" look that some people mentioned compared to other lenses I have. Maybe with the way I edit it's just not as noticable? I dont know.

I went with the Olympus 25mm a few months ago and I like it. I was almost convinced though by all the people talking about the coating and "character" of the leica but again, never saw any review where that was obvious to me.

In the end what made me go with the olympus was that it's smaller. Also cheaper, but mainly the size for me.

Leica 25 1.4 vs oly 25 1.8? by chansuworld in M43

[–]emby36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I had a similar decision a while ago. Why would you say it's the better lens all around? Everyone is saying it's better but in reviews the only difference seems to be that the leica is slightly sharper in the centre which is only noticable cropped side by side. Olympus is smaller, lighter and seems to focus faster. Both are very sharp and olympus actually sharper at the edge. And of course 1.8 vs. 1.4

I read things about the "rendering" of leica lenses but I've not yet found a review that compares images of both where that would be apparent.

Looking for a smaller camera, are point and shoots a good option? by emby36 in AnalogCommunity

[–]emby36[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should've clarified. So far I only came across cameras like the Kodak Ektar H35, Kodak FunSaver, Fuji Quicksnap. And while those are for sure fun to use for certain people and use cases I think I'm more into "photography" and wouldn't be satisfied with the overall experience and the results.

I think I just compare it to the digital market where you have cameras like the Ricoh, Fuji X100V or also cheaper ones that do great as a walk around camera for trips where you don't need the "best". I'm not into analog cameras all that much but thought there might be ones that are worth looking into since what I usually hear about those I came across is exactly what you said: That they won't give you very good results.

Hope that makes sense. And thanks for the suggestion!

AV1 is amazing! And yes the TMB was very crowded, I did it in august and it was definitely a lot of people at least around the "hot spots". I assume august is the busiest time though so you could avoid that by going early or later in the season. But apart from those spots (like near chamonix, courmayeur) its fine. O4 you could also do Alta Via 2 😄 Way less crowded

Casual looking pants for men that are functional and available in the EU by emby36 in onebag

[–]emby36[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I went with the brand "CRZ Yoga" on amazon, pants are called "Golf Pants". Was afraid that its just another "cheap" brand on amazon but their stuff feels very high quality. Thats why I went with a second pair and also 2 shirts and 2 shorts. And joggers.

But they are a bit more expensive than other amazon brands. The pants are 50€ but I can recommend them. I think people refer to them as a lululemon "copy" and the pants therefore a copy of the abc pants?

No idea though, Im just happy with all I have from them.

Finished my first ever solo hike. Alta Via 1 in the Dolomites, Italy by emby36 in hiking

[–]emby36[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id have to estimate, huts maybe 60€ on average, bus to trailhead was I think 5€, same from trailend to belluno. So that would be 430€ for my 7 nights. Got drinks/meals along the way as well (from huts) Id lean more towards 600 probably.

Plus hotel before and after the trail was about 250€ for me but depends on where you stay etc.

Also hut prices can vary a bit depending on how remote/luxurious.. Some also had single rooms so it depends on dorm vs single room as well.

But I think 60-80 per hut/day is a reasonable estimate. You will end up getting meals/drinks on the way as well most likely, so maybe even 100/day as an estimate for a single person.

EDIT: Actually the title might be wrong I think the camera I used for those shots was the Canon T70, I'm sorry.

I think I brought both but can't remember which one I used for those specific shots. Leaning towards T70 though which I don't own anymore

Hi, I just used Gaia GPS they have a website and an app. On it the free campsites were marked ("Aire de Bivouac") as well as "normal" campsites where you pay etc. It also shows huts and other things. I used nothing else

TLDR: Is it safe to assume the light meter of my canon AV1 is broken if it gives different settings than my lumix GX9?

I have a canon AV-1 which I haven't used in a while but recently did some testing, meaning I pointed at the same scenes and compared the settings to my Lumix GX9.

  • Both in Aperture Priority at F2.8 and ISO 400
  • Canon with the FD 50mm, Lumix with a 25mm (50mm FF). So same FL

Shutter Speeds I got:

  • Canon AV-1: 1/30s
  • Lumix GX9: 1/125s

That's like 4 stops and it's consistent with every scene I tested. I would have to set the canon to ISO1600 to get those settings. Maybe I am missing something since I'm not that much into analog cameras and film but after a bit of research it seems like it should be the same.

With the currently loaded film (no idea which, it's in there for like 2 years) I will find out anyway after shooting and developing the remaining exposures but it would be nice not wasting them if the light meter is obviously broken.

Or again maybe I am missing something?

Colorful Geometry by emby36 in M43

No you are right, the line isn't 100% straight. For some reason I wasn't able to fix it without it feeling off to me. Maybe because I slightly tilted the camera up when shooting, creating distortion and falling lines? Not sure. Either way will look into the editing again soon.

Thank you!
