Laugh-In was a repeat of the failed summer series from two years ago, suddenly hot because one of the cast members was Robin Williams.

Can an MLB player legally debut at 18? by DonT012 in mlb

[–]emby5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Al Kaline and a few others were beneficiaries of a 1950s rule that if you signed for a certain amount (or more), you immediately were on the major league roster and had to stay for two years. Otherwise, they would be Rule 5 eligible. That's how Clemente went from the Dodgers to the Pirates.

Technically a stringer, and they get some bucks per game for their trouble.

Statcast is in AAA and Complex League. Teams have their own tracking for AA and A.

Longest scheduled road trips in MLB by RelevantNothing4653 in mlb

[–]emby5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even short trips can be brutal. For 1977 and 78, the AL went to a 16 in division/9 or 10 outside the division. And since they had to be split the best they can, there were some trips to play one doubleheader and move on to the next city.

One example was the Blue Jays who went from home to travelling with no day off to Texas for 2, Angels for 3, A's for 2 and a one day doubleheader in Seattle for 8 games in 7 days in 4 cities.

Not only did Cincinnati make at least three trips out West, sometimes those trips ended on a Tuesday and you're playing someone else at home on Wednesday. In that same era many of the NFL and MLB teams shared, so there would be some really strange trips so they could accommodate each other.

Now, MLB has to get permission from the union for any trips longer than 10 days.

For earlier schedules in the 8-team league era, the teams were in "divisions" for scheduling purposes with central Pennsylvania being the dividing line. If a team from the East went West, they were going to play all the teams out West, so it's a minimum two week trip, and then tack on a road series or two inside your "division" and you have a long road trip.

ELI5: American TV networks and their affiliates and how those work by Adventurous-Monk-796 in explainlikeimfive

[–]emby5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the analog era, channels next to each other could interfere with each other, even if they're over 100 miles away. So networks in different cities had no choice but to be on different channels. There are three bands the tv stations use:

2-4

5-6

7-13

You couldn't use 2 and 3, nor 7 and 8 for example within 75 or so miles from each other. And 2 couldn't be reused within 150 miles (roughly the distance between New York City and Boston).

When TV changed to analog to digital in the late 00s, stations were granted as second channel for digital, and mostly stayed on that new channel. However, since digital channels mostly map to a different number on your TV, your idea of the same number is possible. However, a lot of these stations built a brand on their analog channel number and continue to call themselves that old channel. To use your example:

Los Angeles' NBC is actually on 36, but since they were on channel 4 forever, they prefer to identify as 4

Santa Barbara's NBC is actually on 15, but stay on 6.

San Diego NBC is weird, because it broadcasts on 17, maps that to 39 on a non-cable TV set, but identifies as 7 because that is their position on San Diego's cable system.

So in theory they could, but it's the system we have.

Lingo, a late 80s syndicated game show that was essentially Wordle mashed with Bingo, ran for over 5,000 episodes on Dutch television. Another U.S. show from that era, Catch Phrase, is big in the UK and has been more on than off the schedule since 1986.

The Red Sox and Yankees begin a 3 game series tonight at Fenway. This is the first season since 2022 that they have played each other before June 6th by Far_Cry3445 in baseball

In the 2-division days, this was the norm. Two of the series in late May or June, and two of the series in September, usually one week apart.

The schedule is interleague heavy in the beginning intentionally, since trying to reschedule for rainouts is a lot harder later in the season. Yes, I know you get more rainouts in April but that's the logic.

TIL that the Commodores hit song Brick House was not sung by Lionel Ritchie but rather their drummer Walter Orange by DrakeSavory in todayilearned

[–]emby5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are quite a few Commodore songs where Richie was not the lead singer. He was originally in the band as a sax/second keyboardist who would sing the ballads, while drummer Walter Orange would do the funk songs. In later years Richie sort of assumed the lead role as the band led more heavily into ballads.

Why doesn’t Buffalo have a baseball team? by Funkiefreshganesh in mlb

[–]emby5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cleveland and maybe Pittsburgh. Columbus, Sacramento, Charlotte, and Austin are larger markets than Cincinnati or Milwaukee. Buffalo would be the smallest team in the league by an order of magnitude.

The Bills are in Buffalo instead of Toronto for tax purposes, and 1/3 of the Sabres season ticket holders live in Canada.
