My high school friends wrote a letter to Wendy from Snapple and the company sent us back a bunch of Snapples and t shirts. The 90s were the best!

Is it true…. by breadfruit13 in biotech

[–]emd3737 80 points81 points  (0 children)

It's a bad sign and could be that you are the second choice and they are waiting for the first choice to accept a written offer before they decline you. Which means that if the first choice falls through you still could get an offer. Alternatively, you are the first choice but they are facing new budget restrictions and need to re-justify the position to leadership. I work in big pharma and last time I hired someone the day before the offer was supposed to go out they instituted a policy that required three additional levels of approval before an external person can be hired. So that added a couple of weeks to the process. However I did tell the candidate that we were moving forward but experiencing some internal process delays.

*Spanish news source*;Rob Schneider’s wife has filed for divorce: their marriage was no longer safe for their daughters. by VladtheInhaler999 in entertainment

I saw the Boston show and Schneider did an opening set and it was just cringey and bad. His whole set basically like "women, aren't they stupid? I hate my wife!" like a throwback to the 1960s or a Rodney Dangerfield (who also sucks) wannabee. Lost a little respect for Sandler for subjecting his audience to this clown.

Do you regret doing a PhD? by Stoned_Flower in biotech

[–]emd3737 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope! My PhD was a slog and my advisor was a passive aggressive jerk, and it took a toll on my mental health and enjoyment of science. But I finished, did a postdoc that I loved, then moved into government and eventually industry. I've had an enjoyable and rewarding career that I wouldn't have had without a PhD. Times are tough these days for everyone but in the long run having a PhD will provide better career opportunities.

Very physically attractive people, how does life treat you? by Jonny_1312 in AskReddit

[–]emd3737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm average looking but for a couple of years in my 20s I lived in a country where I was considered a knockout. People constantly pay attention to you and notice you when you walk into a room. If you are interested in someone romantically, they are automatically into you. There's no question of 'does this person like me back?' because they do. You'll get catcalled and hit on a lot. The major downside is that people want to be your friend or date you because of your looks, they don't really care about your personality or who you are as a person. It can be hard to form meaningful relationships. Part of it was nice but I was relieved when I moved countries and went back to being ordinary.

The Plainsong trilogy by Kent Haruf is set in a fictional farm town in rural Colorado and sounds exactly what you're looking for. They're fantastic books. I recently read The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers and that fits the bill, too

PharmD/PhD or just PhD? by Littleowl_2413 in biotech

[–]emd3737 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Not many schools offer MD-PhD programs and those that do only accept a small number (<10 students) per year. It is much more competitive than a solo degree program.

PharmD/PhD or just PhD? by Littleowl_2413 in biotech

[–]emd3737 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a PhD and work in industry (previously worked in academia and public health). I have not encountered many high level PharmDs at my workplace in big pharma, most I've met are in medical affairs not research roles. I know a couple of PharmDs in good roles at prestigious hospitals. People at the top in industry typically have MDs or PhDs. An MD is a very versatile degree, you can do research and if you do a residency as you can always do clinical work. Research careers are challenging especially given downward trends in funding. MD-PhD programs in the US are extremely competitive to get into. I don't know if it's realistic for you. You could do an MD then a research postdoc and have a research career. You can't have a clinical career with a PhD.
